Quick-hit thoughts around the NFL and New England Patriots - espnBoston

Quick-hit thoughts around the NFL and with the New England Patriots:

1. Rookie quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s debut in the Patriots’ preseason opener was widely praised; his quick release and long-ball touch two areas most noted. But there was something else that might be more important, and it came on running back Stephen Houston’s fumble when Garoppolo darted into a scrum as others were standing around and relentlessly threw himself into the pile in hopes of recovering the football. Usually you don’t want your quarterback vulnerable to injury in a pile of 300-pounds-plus linemen, but this is a rare situation that I think is an exception. When players and coaches review the film and see a rookie at that position making that type of effort and being ripped out of the pile by opponents, it can only yield one reaction: Instant respect. Playing quarterback in the NFL requires so many different things, and one of them is leading in a way that makes others want to follow them; Garoppolo’s presence has stood out to me in that regard, with Thursday night’s effort further reinforcing it.

Wow, great story, I didn't notice Garoppolo in the scrum for the ball. Nice to hear about his leadership abilities, not that I ever doubted he had leadership ability.

Of course, this is exactly what Manziel is being cautioned to avoid.

Nice title, well done.

Gropp reminds me of Drew Brees.

  • Similar height and build.
  • Quick release
  • Optimistic/Positive Attitude
  • Quick decision making
  • Nice touch on medium-deep throws
  • Crafty in the pocket. Can use his legs to create space
Not saying he will be as good as Brees (we can only hope) but his style is comparable to Brees.

Agree completely, Gropp showed great poise and accuracy and Gropp seems to have the instincts and ability to play at NFL speed that is so necessary to a QB at this level. The battle for back-up between Mallett and Gropp will be fun to watch for the next few weeks. Overall an impressive showing for Gropp.

Just wanted to compliment you on the Gropping way you Gropped that Gropp. (I gather you've made your stand on the nickname question? It certainly beats JAG, IMO.)

Well, I have to admit that had Gropp played like the Hammah then I would likely be calling him The JAG instead of Gropp, which in Swahili means IN BACK OF THE GOAT

I may have to change my handle to "Grop to Gronk". Lol. I missed the last half thurs. (Darned stream kept freezing). Watching replay now. Very impressed with with him. BTW, I love the Gropp moniker.

So Jimmy is more like Aaron Rodgers :)

First pre-season game against third string players. It was encouraging to see Garoppolo look poised and make some nice throws but let's pump the brakes a little here. It seems like QB fever has taken hold.

While I appreciate the enthusiasm I'd coach him to avoid the piles, it's not very difficult to gauge and eye or break a finger inside those piles.

When do the complainers in the Grop drafted thread cook their crow?

At the very least for now ... depth improved which is great.

Meh....... Though I agree, I also understand that it's still preseason. Folks here are like the kids rattling the presents under the tree in the days before Christmas, trying to figure out what's in the package and hoping it's what they've been praying for. :)

As for Gropp. I guess that's a better handle than Grope.

This must all be taken with a grain of salt since its source is Mike Reiss whom The God Of All Knowledge, aka Michael Felger, called "Bob Kraft's 5th Son" because TGOAK sees Reiss as a "homer", which is only exceeded in dastardliness by being a member of Al Qaeda. Hence, it is very likely a lie.

I'm not sure that time has come yet, the O-line is a mess and the Grop pick could have been used to protect TFB. I'm pleased with how Grop is coming along but I still wouldn't have made that pick.

Saving all these threads so I can laugh at them in 2 years when he's horrible and we're trying to shovel him off to Houston for their 1st.

Has anyone determined his "trade value" yet, my guess he is now worth at least two high first and a "cap friendly" all pro...
