Ben Volin's 53, fwiw...

i'd rather it was bedard's 53.....but ill take it for what its worth.....im sure he does the best he can

In a perverse sort of way, these 4 game suspensions to start the season help the Pats. It lets them stash players like Browner and Tynes on a 4-game shadow roster, effectively protecting a couple of additional players in the early part of the season when you don't know where you might need injury depth.

Ben Volin is the Ryan Mallett of beat writers. All fluff and no substance.

He's got Jones making the team. Instead of complaining about the rest of his selections, you can all stop reading right there.

I fully expect Jones to make the team, and Jones as well. You're right that the 3rd-string Jones position is up for grabs now, though. :)

I actually don't mind him projecting Justin Jones; I'm sure many on this board would have said the same. Opinions differ, and it's early yet. What really bugs me are the flat-out errors that look suspiciously like ignorance.

Aiken one of the best LS in the business, with no real risk of losing his job? Smaller than the other errors called out, but still ...

Unless Aiken has improved significantly in the offseason, he isn't one of the best LS in the business.

I know a few folks here had issues with some of Bedard's conclusions, but at least you always knew he put in the study and could defend his conclusions. Volin seems to want to be able to just declare things so; his Friday Globe dismissal of Garoppolo read as if it was written before the game and was not adapted to reflect with what happened. Volin just seems lazy to me.

It's pretty obvious that, for some reason (laziness, Florida guy, whatever), Volin is out of his depth in the Boston sports market. But piling on for relatively picayune things, while ignoring something as blatantly obvious as the Justin Jones cut, does no credit to Patsfans.com posters.

But...the Jones cut was announced after Volin wrote his article. I expect a lot from Patriots writers, but not psychic powers.

"Main" newspaper guy posting final 53 roster keeps a man who's cut on final cuts.

Happens all the time.

Huge miss.

Wouldn't be the first time BB has shocked with a cut. At least Justin Jones has been an active participant in all the TC sessions and played many snaps on Thursday.

I'm still trying to fathom who the hell "Cameron Gordon" is and what he has yet proven to deserve a place on the Patriots 53 man regular season roster.

Volin seriously needs to follow Miguel on Twitter and read our posts here on Ian's Patsfans :)

Volin does not follow me on Twitter. I tweeted your and RayClay about Tyms' suspension. Andy Hart retweeted my tweet. Ben then retweeted Andy Hart's retweet.

On Twitter Volin comes across as a media member who would find interacting with fans as beneath him.

Things that set my teeth on edge: Ben Volin has no idea that Brian Tyms is suspended for the first 4 games, and no idea that Darius Fleming exists. (Psst, Ben -- PatsPicker.)

I didn't see Jake Bequette anywhere either.

And he said Tavon Wilson was a 3rd rd pick a couple years ago. He was actually a 2nd rounder.

Jones wasn't a shock. People here were pointing out his struggles. That's kind of the point, really.

Actually, I emailed a comment to him last year and he emailed me back after a few days and was very apologetic for the delay (due to hectic travel, etc.). He could not have been kinder.

Unfortunately he's not in Reiss', Curran's, Price's, Yates' or Howe's league.

Regarding his avoiding you on Twitter - - that may come from some professional insecurity.

I tweet Reiss about typos from time to time, but I don't recall ever having to bother him for something bigger than that. Maybe once there was a bit of unclear writing or something, where I said "I guess you're implying X" and he confirmed.

This may seem harsh and disrespectful but I don't particularly value Volin's writing style or knowledge of football thus making it easier to cast aside his work. Most of my thoughts revolve around "he wrote what?" to get a click.

Wow. I had been a Volin defender for the past year or so, but some of this stuff is just off the cliff.

At LB: Cameron Gordon over Steve Beauharnais and Darius Fleming???? Because Cameron Gordon is a good ST'er???? But he cuts Chung at a position that has little depth while Chung is a proven ST ace in coach O'Brien's system????

(Post Edit: I actually had to Google the name "Cameron Gordon" because honestly, I had never heard the name before. Found out that the UDFA Rookie was "inactive due to an undisclosed injury" for the Redskins preseason game. Is Volin TRYING to get fired?

Methinks the Globe is just trolling us here.

Here's what someone with REAL knowledge wrote about the LB position the other day:

New England Patriots 4th quarter review: Brian Tyms runs free - espnBoston

3. Third-year linebacker Darius Fleming’s potential versatility showed up as he played an off-the-line role in the nickel for a few snaps. Most of Fleming’s action in the game came in an end-of-the-line role, and although still a linebacker role, the responsibilities are different between the two. While playing off the line, Fleming didn’t shed a block while playing downhill on Lache Seastrunk’s 19-yard run before making up for it on the next play by attacking the line of scrimmage and tackling Seastrunk on a 3-yard run. Fleming’s potential to back up both spots could give him an edge for a roster spot.
Volin is another in a long line of media people who are butthurt after BB hurt their feelings. Bill doesn't discriminate when it comes to tearing someone a new one - Globe, Herald, Worcester T&G, Providence Journal, SI, ESPN....It's just beautiful.

OK, mystery solved about the multiple media reports that Tyms' suspension was announced after the Thursday game.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I'll cross-post to the thread on that topic.

Tyms...has to stay if anything because Grap is comfortable with him and it's great for a young QBs development to have that comfort level.

Yeah, that's not how you win a job in the NFL.

If it were, maybe they could develop a backup QB comforting test for the combine. Of course, then the NFL Network would probably have to team with the Lifetime Network to televise it.

I still dont see Boyce getting cut his sophmore year when he was just drafted last year. I think they would at least give him another year to prove himself
I can't see them cutting Boyce either, not with how bad their return game is right now.
