There's No Way Mallett Makes This Team

I agree with almost everything said in this thread but after watching the game again you can clearly see that it is his body language that makes it easier to pile on him. We've seen Brady hit the turf after a throw countless times and just get up like nothing happened. But Mallet gets up, no matter how soft the hit, like he has to scrape himself off of the pavement and this negative vibe, like he had the worst protection of all time, made everything seem worse than it truly was.

Jimmy's play wasn't just a breath of fresh air, it was also his infectious happy attitude. He looked like a rook without a care in the world, while I literally felt Mallet's frustration through the tv.

Remember when people were saying the Patriots could fetch a 1st rounder for Mallett?

Hopefully tonight's game puts to rest such ridiculous notions in addition to the thought that they'd get anything in return other than a ham sandwich and a bag of chips.

I like ham sandwiches and I love chips (Lays Classic).

Hes had the best coaching and mentoring from a HOFer. What team would be dumb enough to give NE a 3rd for Mallet?

Al Davis isnt around anymore.

I see why BB drafted Jimmy Meatball.

I watched most of the first/second quarter again and Mallet wasn't as bad as I thought. Couple of first downs negated by dumb penalties. His protection was really bad. I really never thought the guy was better than Hoyer, but let's see a couple more games with him first. He made some nice throws in tight spots too.

I feel like Caserio is staring into my soul when I look at your avatar.

I clearly remember Bledsoe's first game or two and Brady's first game or two and there was a wow factor with both. Bledsoe's cannon of an arm and confidence where on display and Brady's awareness and pocket presence and accuracy were clear to see. It was pre season but the talent was hard to dismiss just because they were playing with and against scrubs.

Just saying .... that was their first few games and this is year 4 for Ryan.

Being just another QB in this league really doesn't cut it except for backup duty.

'without a care in the world' is very key. Mallet has a whole lot more on the line concerning his career at this point in time. To look exactly like a competent, average back-up when you are trying to prove yourself a starter.. I understand if he couldn't contain that frustration. Not like the rest of the team was doing much to cheer him up.

I agree, it is somewhat disturbing. He comes off as fairly genuine. That blowup does him no justice.

The Hammah probably has grounds for a civil suit against the OL and coach for destroying his future career earning potential. But them his mis-targeted receivers could just sue him on the same grounds.

Ryan Fitzpatrick made Mallett look like 2007 Brady tonight. He was 6 for 14 for 55 yards, two picks, and went three and out on four out of five drives. The Texans might be desperate for any QB soon.

While true, they still have their 4th round pick in a very hyped up Tom Savage, and the NCAA's all time leader in passing yards, TDs, and completions with Case Keenum.

Keenum made his debut last year in week 6 or 7 and immediately had a QB rating of 110 in his very first game. 2 weeks later, he threw 3 TD passes in the first half and ended up with 350 yds passing and another 26 on the ground.

Is either QB going to set the NFL on fire? Probably not.

Can they be as good, if not better than Ryan Mallett? Hell, yes....

I'm not sure that anyone in the HOU Texans organization automatically looks past the guys on their own team for a mediocre at best Ryan Mallett from the NEP. If Mallett is cut (which I don't honestly see happening, at least at this point) then I can understand HOU wanting to throw him in the mix for backup/3rd string QB. I've never thought that it'd make any sense for them to give up a draft pick to do so, however; although that's just my opinion.

A few comments on the Texan game
-
All three Texan QB's made Mallett look like the second coming of Brady. They were 0 for the game on converting third downs. Fitzy was all over the place, throwing late and behind receivers (Cards could have had several additional picks). Most of his yardage came late in the first half with the Texans going hurry up and the Cardinals in a soft prevent zone. When the Cardinals brought a blitz, Fitzy threw an interception (see below).

Ed Hochuli's crew called a zillion penalties (on both teams) so the Texans, and especially Keenum, were constantly in bad situations. The Cardinals on the other hand were mostly able to overcome the penalties.

All three Cardinal QB's looked good, including Logan Thomas who played the second half (granted against scrubs). He had good field awareness, a nice release and made some good throws into tight windows.

John Brown will be a good receiver in this league.

Our friend Jeff Tarpanian is a starting inside LB for the Texans and made a nice TFL early in the game. Former Pat Marcus Bernard had an interception

I agree, and am always ready to note that these players spend a great deal more time with coaches behind the scenes than they do in televised events thus we get a very small sample of what these players can and will do so mine is not an informed opinion on the subject. And Mallett does have ability. My concern with him remains I have witnessed very few positives and plenty of negatives in his opportunities to shine in preseason. He remains very much an enigma and is not in his first or second year.
Agreed. If you're trying to say "the trend line don't look so good," I'd concur, but have no way of knowing.

I'm not sure the Texans want to win this year, if they tank the season they'll get a shot at drafting Christian Hackenberg, which might be O'Brien's plan.

I was kinda joking. Although I don't get why BOB would want Fitzpatrick as his starting QB, I think one preseason game is not enough of a sample size to panic.

Mallett for CJF straight up.

Why in God's name would the Texans give a mid-round pick (or anything beyond a throw away conditional 7th for a warm body) for The Hammah who has yet to show any competence at NFL QB?

Why would teams trade for Mallett when Cousins may be available?

Here is the bottom line on the guy... He hears footsteps and he panics. He has never looked calm in the pocket on any passing play since he's been here. You cant teach that. The QB's who excel at this level possess the ability to hang in there and make their reads without the fear of potentially taking a lick. None of them like to get hit, Brady is right near the top of that list. But he's not afraid to hang in there a couple extra seconds and wait for the play to develop. It helps that his ability to move in the pocket has always been a huge strength, but it helps even more to have some SACK.

In my opinion, Mallet just doesn't have the balls to make it at this level. You cant coach heart. I hate being harsh on the kid, but im calling it as I see it.
