Too late, Jeff. The Garoppolo hype train has left the station and nothing can possibly stop it until next Friday.

I do agree with him on Mallet.

Mallet is getting ripped, and somewhat desrvingly, but he also had no help either. I'm down on Mallet, but not out. I want to see what he does the next 3 games. And the same can be said for JG. I'm glad he looked great, but its just one game, and from all reports (including from attending 2 practices myself) he's had a bad camp. Hopefully both guys grow the rest of TC/pre season.

This reminds me of something. Had something to do with "growers" and "showers", but I can't quite remember. ;)

Nice summary. Fourth running back seems up for grabs and a training camp cut brought in wouldn't surprise me. It's a backup/developmental position, so why hold a spot for guys who aren't developing?

If 26 takeaways from the game is a bit much for the tl;dr crowd, Howe also has an abbreviated version today:

5 takeaways from Patriots-Redskins | Boston Herald

Some excerpts:

1. Jimmy’s crackin’
..it might already be time to give him more quality work in the next game against the Eagles.

2. Mallett’s showcase
If the intention was to make Ryan Mallett look like a legitimate NFL starting quarterback, it might have helped the cause to give him an extended run with some legitimate starting teammates

3. No hurry
The backup pass rushers... Buchanan had their only sack, two quarterback hits and a team-high seven tackles. But Bequette sat with an injury and Smith wasn’t noticeable.

4. Running in mud
If there isn’t enough improvement over the final three games, Belichick might be willing to roll with his top three, plus H-back James Develin, and just store a back on the practice squad. That could be the easiest way to compensate for the possibility of carrying three quarterbacks.

5. Playing time
Ryan Wendell played with the third-team offense, which was odd. Surely, Wendell is on the bubble, but his past contributions indicate he should be above that level of competition. Still, it’s too easy to make an overriding characterization after one preseason game, so let’s see if these become trends in the coming weeks.

My only question in regards to his five points was no mention of Brandon Bolden in regards to the running backs - though I do agree that the three undrafted rookies didn't do much on Thursday to improve their already slim chances of making the roster.

I hope this o line play doesn't stay as putrid as it displayed against the skins, the loss of Scar might loom larger than we could of imagined.

I really want to like Gug but if this o line doesn't shape up they will get Brady killed.

Frankly I'm scared to put him out there against the Eagles next week with that kind of offensive offensive line performance.

The OL looked horrible last pre season too.

Pardon my ignorance, but what's "tl;dr"?

Maybe BJGE if he's cut to backup Ridley.

I'm in general agreement with Howe's 26 points except for #22.

There is no way whatsoever that even half of Kan Davis, JAG Davis, Ebner, Justin Green & Chris White should make the final 53.

My preference is that Zero of them make it.

I'm not as sure as you seem to be that the RB4 spot is necessarily "developmental" this year--especially if it's Brandon Bolden.

At the moment, we have 2 primary RBs. One is the starter, Ridley. The other is Ridley's backup, which is currently Brandon Bolden. I do not trust White as a rookie to backup Ridley at this point, although I could be wrong. We'll have a better grasp of the situation in the next 2-3 preseason games.

We also have 2 third down RBs. One is the starter, Vereen. The other is Vereen's backup, which is currently James White.

Personally, I have not yet seen, nor heard about Finch/Houston showing enough to warrant the replacement of Brandon Bolden. Perhaps Belichick feels differently, and we'll know soon enough.

The only things that would keep Bolden from beating out Finch/Gray/Houston would be:

--Bolden's injury being significant enough

--BB deciding to keep Ridley, Vereen, White, and Devlin as the 4 backs (3 HBs and 1 FB)

Also interesting to read that Thompkins has regressed enough to be squarely in competition with Brandon LaFell for that particular WR spot.

Boy how things change in a week or so.

The CB situation with L.Ryan (guess he's not going to be our S2....eyeroll) is also interesting as well: "Unless Alfonzo Dennard makes a hard charge once he's cleared for contact, Logan Ryan will start for Brandon Browner during his four-game suspension."

I'm not so sure that I'd have Ryan penciled in already, but we'll have to see.

I'd like a power runner addition, but realistically, how many carries will there be to go around? It's a passing league. Is Bolden better than a camp cut from somewhere else that might have more upside? In my opinion, Bolden looked better his first year than he has since, but that's only my opinion.

I don't consider Bolden to have "won" a spot because the two guys we brought in were duds.

There is no competition there. They are both are going to make the roster.

I think it's obvious that they are both going to make the roster.

I think Howe's point was more a suggestion that the 2 players were battling for the same spot, since LaFell has improved and Thompkins has regressed (in the past week). That spot, while Dobson is out, would be potentially a starting role.

You're preference for years has to been to minimize the Special Teams specialists to the three core plus maybe Slater --- when we know given 15 years of history, Belicheck traditionally allocated at least five or six rosters slots to 98% Special Teamers only and another couple of slots of "mainly special teams, but could conceivably be effective in limited situations in certain packages if the primary two layers of depth get hurt in the same game) guys.
