The Official Patriots vs Redskins Preseason Game Thread

Didn't want to start a new thread so figured I'd post it in here.

Can somebody explain the PUP rules? I've read that we can't put Siliga on PUP b/c he has already practiced? Is this true? I would assume this means we can't put Chris Jones on PUP since he too has practiced. So if we want to keep those two on the 53 man roster we are essentially operating with a 51 man roster? This seems like an absolutely terrible system. Am I missing something?

You're right, however there is a new IR rule you can use on one player only which is like PUP for players that practiced. I could be wrong about that too, so I'll get out of the way.

According to Reiss, Chris Jones has a sprained ankle and could miss other preseason games.

The idea behind PUP is to give players extra time to recover from injuries that happened during the prior season (or early offseason) that linger to the following season. So any new injury - which would occur after someone practices - won't make a player PUP eligible.

There is one temporary IR spot where a player is reserved for 8 weeks. It can only be used on a player who was on the 53 man roster on or after the final cut-down date. Said another way, if Jones' injury is bad enough to warrant this, they can't just use it on him right away and keep an extra player - they have to cut the extra player first, then use it on Jones, then resign the extra player if he is still available.

From the NFL's point of view, teams' rosters are 46 players deep. They allow 7 extra slots as a short-term disabled list for injured players who aren't going to be out for the year. If a team wants to use those slots for developmental players, they can, but the NFL's intent is to use it for injured guys.

Monitoring the competition at center. The rotation was notable, as incumbent Ryan Wendell played solely the second half with the second unit while Dan Connolly got the start at center and played throughout the first half. The Patriots seem to be taking a long look at various combinations, and Connolly -- who was the starting center in 2011 before switching to right guard the past two seasons -- got the initial look of the preseason.

Is THAT what you read from the post?

I don't know. I'm suggesting that the way the two of them looked yesterday, I'd rather go with JAG than Mallet. He was going against scrubs, but that didn't make those balls he threw any less accurate. He looked to me exactly the way he looked on the highlight reel of his stuff from college. His footwork looks good, he can get away from the rush better than Mallet. If forced to choose, I'd trust BB to be able to coach him up to better results in an emergency.

I think its perfect. Especially given who our HC is.

You're new here so your first lesson should be to not take Weeks 1, 2, and 4 of the preseason too seriously. Week 3 is usually the best barometer of the team's strengths and weaknesses (see vs. the Lions last season and the abuse the interior OL took). Garoppolo could easily turn around next week and fire two picks while Mallett could look like the second coming of Montana.

Mallett's gonna' light Washington up tonight. Expect to hear from Houston by the 2nd quarter.

of course I realize this but...it's STILL a football game and one can make judgements on traits being displayed.I figured the pro game was far too fast and his skills too meager to make it in this league...and I've watched a ton of his play so far in camp...but he passes the eye test.If the O line was bad for Mallett then it HAD to be at least as bad for JAG but he showed a pro's confidence and he MADE plays.

I watched him at practice last week and I swear the kid couldn't hit a freakin' stationary target. He overthrew receivers continually on reps. Guess reps aren't his forte yet because he was on point in game action tonight.

Butler has another game like this one and...well, somebody better be getting nervous. This kid can cover and he's been doing it all camp too. Very bright ray of sun in an otherwise gloomy night.

That quick release will get you a long way, especially in this offense. I noticed that in his college video and I bet that was the one thing that caused the FO to roll the dice.

Eh. I'm well aware of that, and I've been reading here a LOT longer than I've been posting. But I don't think you can deny that JAG has certain qualities that Mallet lacks, namely the lightening quick release, a very nice touch with touch passes, and consistent repeatable mechanics. Those are things that aren't that teachable on anything other than a very long term basis. IE, Mallet isn't going to suddenly wake up and learn to throw touch passes. JAG also was reported to have been very impressive when they interviewed him predraft.

JAG could, in fact, turn around next week and throw a couple of picks and I would probably STILL feel more comfortable with him in the backup role over Mallet.

Why are we talking about Siliga to PUP when we don't even know how long he'll be out? Is there any real info out there about that?

Couple thoughts:

DT
Injuries to Siliga and Jones would hurt a lot more if they were needed to start. So the other crew of back-ups will get more practice and preseason game time. I'd still expect both to make the team. Gives the team an opportunity to watch Forston, Vellano, and others.

DE rotation
Buchanan and Moore got a lot of play. Will Smith seems behind them.
I don't think Bequette played. I don't group him with Brady, Revis, and Mayo, so that's a bad thing.

After one preseason game, Buchanan and Moore have an early advantage on Smith and Bequette for spots.

LB
We all assume Anderson is the fourth. Beauharnais and Fleming seem the top two over White, Skinner, Hull, etc.

S
Interesting that Harmon received the least playing time among Wilson, Chung, Ebner, and Hawkins. Just makes this thing appear wide open. Note that Hawkins is one of the kick returners, which is equally open.

CB
Butler continues his unlikely challenge for a roster spot. Can they keep six corners? He played with great technique Thursday. While he lacks size and speed, he had a couple of the best plays for the "Patriots."

On sitting all the starters and losing the game: smart. Many have commented that the biggest risk to the Patriots season is injury.

Once a player has officially participated in any training camp practice, he is no longer eligible to be placed on either the active, or reserve, Physically Unable to Perform (a/k/a PUP) list.

You think Boyce has really shone the last two years?
Huh?
I said the Boyce was playing, and catching passes, vs starters and Tyms was playing and catching passers against guys who won't be in the league.
What does Boyce 'shining' have to do with that. Aside from toasting gym teachers who are at training camp for summer vacation, when has Tyms 'shined'?
The point being, lets keep a little perspective.
