I don't agree. You want a backup QB to be able to win a few games if your starter goes down for a few weeks to keep the team in the playoff race. That's what you want in your backup QB in my opinion. To have a backup that could win the SB is an extreme luxury.

Absolutely. I say this a lot, but look at last year's Packers. Without a competent backup, they utterly fell apart waiting for Rodgers' return.

Pray-tell who would be the #2 in that case? If Brady goes down do you REALLY want Garropolo to have the fate of the team on his shoulders this early on?

Mallett showed no confidence back there and was making bad throws. other then having 4 years in the system I really don't think he holds any edge over Garropolo

Every year we go through this same hysteria in reaction to the first preseason games. Our line play always looks awful, probably attributable to the fact that most of the players that we play will, at best, be riding the pine all year. In this case, two of the OL guys starting the game probably won't even be on our roster, and we were playing the 5th and 6th string DT's and DE's after the first few downs.

The purpose of last night's game was to give a few guys a chance to make a case for back end roster spots, and to begin to fill out the practice squad. Also, to give JAG his first NFL experience (heck, his first NFL game attendance). Other than that, it is about fundamentals. It certainly isn't about beating the Redskins.

The Redskins, on the other hand, are in a different place, trying to convince themselves that they are a decent NFL club after much recent evidence to the contrary, and with a new, first year, first game coach trying to demonstrate that he belongs in the job and has a handle on it. They were playing for something a little different.

I agree, the OL did look bad, but doesn't our OL always look bad in pre season? At least that's how I usually see it.

I remember being scared ****less for Brady during the 2011 preseason. We went to the SB that year. We have to remember, everything is vanilla right now. We're not game planning against certain players, schemes etc.

As long as we don't get a QB hurt, I'm holding off on any criticism......For now

The big difference before was Scarnnechia would always seem to fix our OL problems. Not saying we can't fix the issue, but a key figure behind our OLs success is no longer with the Pats.

I love what I saw from Gropp and couldn't stomach what I saw from Mallet also but........

It was the first preseason game.

Anyone still wearing their Zach Sudfeld jerseys last night?

There always seems to be an element of overaction when it comes to JAG. When he wasn't doing great in practice we had people saying he was a waste of a pick. Now he has done well against Washington there is a love in.

I believe now what I did yesterday. He is a good prospect who is going to need time to develop, but there are people who see real potential in him.

Let's just let him develop and not over-analyse every interception and every good pass

I actually don't think the board has been as bad after this one when compared with other preseason losses. This place went nuclear after the last two Lions games (though some of the doubt and fear was well placed, especially when it came to interior OL play last year).

Exactly.

What I saw last night showed me he has REAL potential and talent. With a lot of hard work and 2-3 years in the system, I feel a lot more comfortable this morning about him stepping in if Brady gets injured or loses it than I did before seeing him in action.

In THREE + years.

Not this year.

JG's TD pass was Brady-esque.

I loved the fall away after he threw it. Just looked like a vet to me.

Granted, its 3rd string vs 3rd string.

It was only one game, and people will relax a bit moving forward, but neither QB is QB2 quality right now. They're in Curtis Painter territory right now, if that.

when did JG come in to replace mallet, I'd like to fast forward and see him play a bit.

First Pats drive of the 2nd half. They each got one half.

Sudfeld had 8 receptions 101 yards 1 TD in four preseason games.

He wasn't even that good in the games. He was just a practice hero.

I'm more disappointed in Michael Buchanan and Logan Ryan than I am in Ryan Mallett.

James Anderson was my biggest disappointment last night.

That was just horrible from someone who is actually expected to have somewhat of a role this year as the first LB to back up Mayo/Hightower/Collins.

His over-pursuit and invisible arm tackling last night was positively Guytonesque.

That better get cleaned up and cleaned up quickly.

I'm not confident the backups could win 1 game, let alone a few weeks worth to keep a playoff race going. God forbid Brady goes down for longer than 1 game, there is no playoff race, so its a moot point if it's either Mallet or Gropps.

Our LBs in general last night just looked confused when it came to dropping into coverage. Fleming was probably the only one who showed a modicum of ability there.

Lets just pray that Brady stays healthy
