There's No Way Mallett Makes This Team

I don't know why people have this "season is over" mentality when it comes to the backup QB having to play. Injuries aren't always season-ending. If Brady suffers a short term injury and is going to miss the game against the Raiders, then I want the best possible backup QB on the field to try to win that game. If Brady gets concussed while up 10 in the third quarter of the AFCCG, then I want the best possible backup QB trying to avoid turnovers and kill the clock. If Mallett is that guy, then I see no reason to cut him or trade him off for nearly nothing.

im with you if mallet outplays Jimmy g for the rest of preseason....but if grop outplays mallet, like he did tonight, then thats why i feel the other way....he played at arkansas and this is his 4th year....if he cant play better than a rookie from eastern illinois......and i understand that there are things that the coaches see at practice that im not privy to

just my opinion

Completely agree with you. A back up QB doesn't need to be one that could take us to the super bowl if Brady went down for the season in the first game. It just needs to be someone that can win a few game if Brady is out for say 4 weeks. Or like you said. Keep you in a game if Brady goes out for that game.

Several months ago, there were rumors on this board that Mallett would be traded for a couple of 2nd round draft picks, a pot of gold and some owners first born child...

Guess they were wrong...

Unless there are huge changes next week, Mallett will be cut.

Theres still hope.

If Pioli gets a new team this off season, he can give NE at least a 2nd for Mallet who played with Tom Brady.

FWIW - I asked the writer of the Broncos trade offer when those trade offers were made. Never heard back from him. The Broncos drafted Osweiler in the 2nd round in 2012. Offer could not have been made in 2011.

Trade him for a $25 Applebees gift card
Or the Ground Round...:)

...compared to Cousins he looked not so great...but keep in mind we have a combination of 1's and 2's and 3's starting so with all things being equal is he as bad as he appeared to be last night...well, he certainly didn't raise his stock IMHO...

FYI -
49ers got the lowest 3rd round comp pick for Dashon Goldson whose contract has a APY of $8.3M.
Atlanta got the lowest 4th round comp pick for Brent Grimes whose contract has a APY of $5.4M
Green Bay got the lowest 5th round comp pick for Eric Walden whose contract has a APY of $4M
Pittsburgh got the lowest 6th round comp pick for Rashard Mendenhall whose contract has a $2.5M

The QB2 battle needs to be wide open after last night. It's simple, who would help us win/manage games better if Brady went down.

Jimmy G actually has the short accuracy to complete screens and slants. Can anyone picture Mallett and Edelman/Amendola clicking? Bad match IMO. Add in the mobility factor and I have a hard time choosing Mallett as QB2 just because he is a vet.

Jimmy's play with the 2s in the next preseason games should decide the battle either way.

Does anyone honestly think the Patriots turned down a 2nd round pick for Mallett, though?

If BB can use a second round pick on Tavon Wilson, anything is possible.

The pass lofted into the EZ over the DB's head for a TD by Jag was a thing of beauty. Mallett can't just be a QB able to throw the bullet...his touch pass wasn't evident last nite...

Color me not impressed after last night's debacle......He has a couple more games to shake off the jitters and perform like a solid backup. JAG looked poised and calm in his short time on the field but want to see more.

Mallett has pretty much every problem that you do not want a quarterback to have in the pocket. His footwork is bad, he has an overreliance on his arm and is not stepping fully into his throws, he stares his receivers down, and his pocket presence is crap at best. I don't think the Pats will outright cut him and leave only a rookie from a small school backing up Brady but, to this point, Mallett has been a waste (and I used to defend him on here). Consider this: Garoppolo looked better in his first game last night than Mallett ever has. I'm aware that Garoppolo was playing against scrubs, but Mallett has before as well and never has look as comfortable as Garoppolo did last night. In all, I think Mallett makes the team but we better pray that Brady remains Iron Man. If not, they're screwed.

Would Brady Quinn be a solid backup?

JAGs stock may never be higher.....time to sell. Andre Johnson plus 2 future #1s. I hear Mallet can be renewed for peanuts and a dumpster full of AHern jerseys

I'm not giving up on Mallet but he made easy things look extremely hard. IDC what string he was playing against because some of those drive starting throws that only travel five yards were at the feet of his guys. It didn't help that some of his good plays were called back from penalties but they still looked like they required too much effort. Also, I thought the oline was by no means great but they were good enough and Mallet just had poor movement in the pocket. So far Mallet hasn't shown the ability to dink and dunk and I would love to see him just given the opportunity to just throw more intermediate-deep routes.

Jimmy may have been playing against scrubs but he made easy throws actually look easy. Mallet has played against scrubs in years past and I don't recall it looking anywhere as effortless as Jimmy made it look.

You forgot to mention his accuracies issues, though it was implied.;)

I agree with everything you said. That's why drafting him was such a head scratcher. My first reaction was "We just got a poor man's Bledsoe. Rush him up the middle and he's done. But if he's a first round talent then I guess it was good value...(crossing fingers)"

I'm all in on JAG simply bc he was able to buy time in the pocket and he even scrambled for a nice gain once without twisting his knee like Mallet. His nice throws were icing on the cake.

I can't believe I'm saying this but Tavon looked okay last night. As did Chung. Strange night.

At this point, I'm not convinced he is. Did he do anything to convince you last night? Conversely, if it were JAG, don't you think the coaches would put him in position to succeed?

Last night no, but one preseason game doesn't undo what has been consensus superiority by Mallett all offseason.

While watching Mallett, a lot of things bothered me but I would call out these: demeanor, posture, reactions to failed plays. Many times it seemed he had already lost the play before even throwing the ball. The guy looked mentally defeated out there and the rest of the team seemed to be ready to follow this lead. He lacks confidence, which is something I never thought I would think of ****y Ryan Mallett. Even watching his presser I felt like he was reading a list of obituaries. Ignoring his physical issues, I'm not convinced this kid has the mental toughness required for a starting QB. The going got tough, and then nothing happened.

When watching Jimmy, I saw a real passion for the game. He was excited to be out there and that emotion permeated the team. The pace of the game felt faster. There seemed to be a renewed enthusiasm. His energy level could be felt all the way through the camera into my livingroom. It will be interesting to see what happens to him when things get a little more difficult and serious but so far, he brings the right attitude to that field.
