From August 2008. (BTW, at least one of these is mine, so I'm not exempting myself here.)

Okay, since we can all agree now that Matt Cassel is a complete bust, what do we do about a QB?
I think O'Connell will be the guys sooner than later, but not this season. We need the "John Friesz" type to come in and backup.

Cassel is just SO friggin' horrible! How did he ever get to this level? He's like the kid who slides all the way through school never learning how to read or write!

What were his coaches doing at every level when they didn't notice how horrible he is?

LOL. He's cut this week. What a disaster. I think the other two guys stick and we hope TB stays healthy until one of them can step up.

The fact that Cassel is still on the team at all means he wasn't a bust. He was a successful seventh round pick because he was the #2 QB for three years. That said, the experiment is over. He seems to have regressed beyond the point of any real usefulness.

That said, I think that signing O'Connell pretty much guaranteed Cassel's exit regardless of what happened. [Think about it for a minute--either way, Cassel is a FA next offseason. All else being equal, going into the next offseason, Brady + Gutierrez w/2 yrs + backup w/1 yr > Brady + Gutierrez w/2 yrs + no one.]

I think it's clear now he's not good enough to be a reliable back up. O'Connell looked a million miles more assured at QB. INT's happen, if you throw one hey, even the best do sometimes but the fundementals have to be there and Cassel looks behind in terms of ability and prescence. Cassel was clearly rattled last night.
Nothing against the kid, he's just not good enough.

And history repeats also.........

I'm sure as heck not down for a full repeat of 2008, TYVM.

I'd love to know why my searches can't pull that stuff up.

Because when Ian upgraded the board, it removed the ability to search through old threads. I found that using Google.

That thread is actually one of the threads where posters were trying to explain the "why" of why Cassel was fine. That would actually work in another thread going right now.

I wouldn't say that the history lesson applies, though. Mallett missing open screens is not the same as Cassel getting bulldozed all game long.

Cassel DID suck that pre-season though. Even I was all for him being given the Spanish Archer.

Cassel is a bust but did not cost a 3rd round pick and Mike Mayock didnt rave about him.

Cassel is not a profient passer and without a running game he is toast. Weve been hearing the tales for years how good Mallet looks in practice and training camp.

You have a strange definintion for a player who is a bust.

Do I?

Cassel won 11 games in NE because the Pats totally changed the offenseive scheme and relied heavy on the run. Cassel won 2nd best season was in KC with 10 wins. KC made the playoffs vs Baltimore only to lose Jamal Charles in the first half. Cassel was toast without Charles.

Pioli got fired trading for Cassel.

Get real, the Patriots invested the #230 overall pick in this kid and he has under 16,000 career passing yards, only one Pro Bowl appearance, and they only got a 2nd round pick in trade for him! The scouts have to do better than that.

Bust.

How is he a bust? Sure, if you were expecting him to be Brady's successor he's a bust but I doubt many were expecting that. No he's not a starting caliber QB but did a fine job when needed to fill in. It's hard to ask more from your backup QB than what he did in '08, let alone from someone you nabbed in the 7th round.

This thread is a good reminder, I'm not a huge believer in Mallett but again this is preseason. How many times have we learned that good or bad, as fans you can't draw a whole lot from it as the coaches do.

Cassel had one advantage that Mallet never will have, Cassel could run with the ball. Also, Cassel's main problem was his slow decision making, which sped up during the season and as the coaching staff helped by calling plays for him.

I am not sure Mallet's accuracy will ever get any better and he cannot run to make up for his slow brain.

Game One of the PS.

This thread is full of win.

Anyone have a Zach Sudfeld jersey to sell? :D

Matt Cassell was also an alien who saw a great opportunity with Moss, Welker, and a solid offensive line, and seized it.

Every year i look forward to the 1st preseason game. After the game I say the same thing, why are there so many pre-season games. Games 1 and 4 mean nothing. The 2nd half is full of guys who will probably get cut and the 1st half is vets who don't want to play or youngsters getting their bearings set. The defenses are extremely basic, the o-line is mixed and they are not a unit. It's sloppy football. This was a tough game, because the boys looked off, a couple of nice things here or there, but next week is when pre-season games really start
