yep. That's a policy i really want Belichick to change, when it's out of reach sit Brady and let the 2nd stringer close it out.

The thing is, they've done that in the past. I don't know what, precisely, it was about last year (and to a lesser extent 2011*) that kept Mallett off the field altogether. You would think that they could at least have sat Brady at the end of, say, the Steelers game or the Ratbirds game, but no.

*Yes, I know Hoyer was there, but even he only got one pass attempt the entire season.

i concur......this whole 60 minutes thing, even in garbage time, annoys me a little

We can certainly say that drafting him his now been proven to be not-stupid and not a big draft-process failure.

Any claim stronger than that, however, gets into "Let's see what happens" territory.

Gropp?? Is that the nickname that has been agreed upon??

Sounds like something your mother would name some illness you had as a kid.. have to stay home today Jimmy, you have a bad case of the Gropp!!!!

I always liked to call him, "JimmyG". But at least "Gropp" is better than "JAG" IMO. "JAG" sounded like we were giving up on him and labeling him "Just Another Guy" based on second hand reports of a few offseason practices. Before even the first game.

Lets hope the "gamer" label the announcers used isn't accurate either. Or at least a light bulb goes off in practice after Thurs night. Of course it's great to see someone do well in a game. Even late in a preseason game against future PE teachers and fry cooks. But, especially with BB, you want Garappolo to do well in practice too.

Well, if Gropp is the official nickname for Garoppolo, I hereby move that Dropp be the official nickname for Roy Finch. Yeesh.

He also had the Pats longest run of the night, 9 yards. I felt Boyce should have had that TD catch, he had it in both hands. Tyms caught everything, Boyce is hit or miss. Back to Garoppolo, 69% completion percentage, pretty damned good ! Also, if it were White or Vereen instead of Finch on that wheel route, that would have been a long gainer.

While I know his practices matter to Belichick I look at it as a fan and generally go on what I see on the field on gameday, and in this instance I saw a young QB who was able to immediately adapt to the speed of the game and look like an NFL caliber QB right out of the gate, and although I don't know how Mallett has really done in practice (mixed reviews) he has shown no ability to adapt to the speed of the NFL game and seems like he is always a step behind executing plays, and you can't give NFL defenses that time to react. On the other hand I was really impressed by how easily Gropp took to the speed of the NFL. It's not gameday against good defenses but he still seemed up to the challenge while Mallett clearly didn't.

While I did like what I saw from JimmyG I do think its unfair the two in their respective situations last night. Mallett was facing much more in terms of NFL quality players last night. I am trying to take everything we saw late in the games from Jimmy and Tyms with a grain of salt.

I do wonder if Tyms has earned some reps with first team.

JGropp looked really good imo. Quick release, accurate and good decisions. He might pass Mallet even with limited reps hes had.

Tyms, get that man a roster spot or at least practice squad. Boyce should be shakin in his boots imo. I want to see what he can do with the #1's.

The slant when we were a little back up was a thing of beauty. Stutter step outside then exploded off of that foot and gained great seperation.

Though it was against scrubs, Gropp showed some juevos out there. First ever NFL game he's ever attended, yet still showed nice poise and decisiveness. Needs to carry this over into practice so he can move up a spot on the depth chart for next preseason game.

He had pressure on him at times and the footwork and pocket awareness was fantastic. Especially when he looked like he was going ot get sacked and somehow squirmed out of it.

I would like to see him get a runout against some higher string players at some point. He has a chance to push Mallett for the backup role.

I mean lets face it, BB would love nothing better than only having to carry 2 quarterbacks. I would imagine if JimmyG is even close to Mallett, there will only be two qb's at the start of the season.

I totally agree on both points. These are terrible, terrible nickname options. We have to come up with something better before one of them sticks.

I took to Google to see if he had a decent nickname in college, but only came up with this pearl of Jets fans' intellect from a discussion on jetsnation.com:
I want a fersure thing outta my first round QBs, and Gallapagus just isn't that for me, yet
I believe its Galapagos ( where I believe Mendel discovered the theory of Evolution)
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Open call: a short, usable nickname that doesn't sound like an insult. Anybody? Anybody?

Watch it bud, the nickname "Gropp" may be insensitive to some. I for one have been groped by myself many times and I find the name highly offensive

Don't know about everyone else but I was impressed from the first snap. The comfort level and quick release were in stark contrast to Mallett's awkwardness and consistently late delivery. imo he has the "it" quality you are always looking for in players, especially QB's, and if tonight is the real guage he belongs ahead of Mallett on the depth chart and a Mallett release becomes a real possibility, although i don't believe Belichick wants to do that.

On a side note Tyms looked exactly like what we are hoping to get from Dobson and could end up being a surprise to make the roster at WR while Dobsosn goes to PUP.
Garopollo looked good. He will be a terrific backup QB for us. I hope he doesn't take a regular season snap just the same though.

Tyms looked like Sims last preseason. He isn't making this team.

My take was that Gropp had Patriot Players around him that did a better job against the opponents on the field at the time. More guys got open and he had better pass protection than Mallet did. Does Mallet need to adjust and step up? Of Course.

Ben Volin's take on things:

Ryan Mallett unimpressive in Patriots opener - The Boston Globe

The Texans might be willing to give up a sixth- or seventh-round pick for Mallett. But that shouldn’t be enticing enough for Bill Belichick. Mallett is more valuable as Brady’s backup than a sixth-round pick.

Because let’s face it, Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t ready to be an NFL backup, even with good numbers: 9 of 13 passing for 157 yards and one touchdown, plus another that was wrongly waived off by the officials. Garoppolo took over after halftime and threw some great deep balls to Brian Tyms (a tall, lanky receiver who came late to camp but is making quite an impression, by the way), but otherwise he’s got that deer-in-the-headlights look in the pocket. There’s a huge jump from the NCAA division formerly known as 1AA to the NFL, and Garoppolo needs a red-shirt year. In training camp practices, Garoppolo is overwhelmed by the speed of the game and complexity of the coverages. He would get swallowed whole in a regular-season game this year.

Mallett gives the Patriots a little bit more peace of mind as Brady’s backup.

Maybe I made my second Dark & Stormy a bit too strong last night, but I didn't get a sense that Garoppolo was "overwhelmed" in any way. I'll grant that you have to weigh the competition he faced last night — and Volin certainly has spent more time at camp than I have. But I didn't see anything last night that justified such a casual and complete dismissal.

Deer in headlight look in the pocket do not complete 9 of 13 passes. Don't know what the hell Volin talking about.

And deer in the headlights don't use their mobility to buy time for receivers to get open, rather than tucking down the ball and bolting. Raw? Heck yeah. "Overwhelmed"? Not even close.

Boy does Volin continue to NOT impress.

He looked good but let's temper it a bit. It was a vanilla set of plays against a vanilla set of players. It's like saying he played "Chopsticks" on the piano very well. He's got a lot of work before he should be anointed. It was promising if he can get comfortable with the system and continue to get better but it's one preseason game.

I agree with you. If anything Mallett was the one looking like a deer in headlights in my opinion. As usual Volin continues to make me wonder how he got the job.
