IDK what to think about Tyms. If he was so good why was he cut by a few teams already over the years? Did it just click for him? Maybe him and JAG just play well together. Might not transfer to Brady. However if for some reason Tyms is the real deal and his light just went on late...

I take him over Boyce. Not just cause he might be better but also cause we have Amendola/Edelman which pretty much covers the slot. We need tall outside WRs.

Boyce caught passes against starters tyms caught passes against future construction workers. That is a tremendous difference.

You think Boyce has really shone the last two years?

So i just started watching my DVR'd version of the game, Mallet looked terrible, the defense was horrendous, we just gave up a fumble on a kick off... annnnnd im done for the night.

He would have been way behind any receiver with high school and major college experience. Probably still a project after being with a few teams, but he's got a lot of upside.
As mentioned in today’s newspaper story which details his nightmarish past, Tyms’ blend of size (6-3, 210), speed (4.4 40) and leaping ability (38.5-inch vertical jump) make him an intriguing – if seriously raw – practice-squad possibility.

He played one year of high school football, attended a community college that didn’t have a football program, had seven catches as a redshirt junior at Florida A&M and added 38 receptions as a senior.

Well, he really diddnt do much in 2012 lol

He needs to make the team, that's all I'm saying. Thomkins and Dobson have shown some ability.

I would like to see him make it. Guy has moves. I would go with 2QB to keep JB.

This kid has created more buzz in one half than Mallet in 4 years. It's not a exaggeration, too

Mallett has generated plenty of buzz since the day he was drafted. Unfortunately, that buzz has been nothing more than fantastical.

All you have to do is pick up a newspaper around the draft time every season, and you'll see that there are at least 5-6 teams who are waging war on each other for the opportunity to trade for him ;)

Defense was missing 8 starters
Fumble was called back

People, stop panicking. I was at the game, sitting 10 rows or so behind the patriots bench. I could see most (80%) of the starters on the sidelines.

i dont see anyone panicking. What I do see is people acknowledging that the game was a **** show and it was probably not worth watching unless you want to see Mallett playing crappy.

Best takeaway of the night: JAG is fun to watch and Tyms is intriguing - for a "raw" talent, the kid can get separation and hold onto the ball.

Worst takeaway of the night: the emphasis in "illegal contact." Ridiculous - am I just a conspiracy theorist or is this league doing everything it can to get Manning another ring? How in the world is any defense supposed to stop a top QB if they're going to call penalties like the one on Browner in the 1st quarter?

The league might have put their foot in it again. The last time they did this the Pats set records on offense. Time for Tom to tee off!

The catch he made on the pass that was knocked out of his hands was enough for me. How that wasn't called a TD, I will never understand.

The Official Shmessy Observation Post From Section 407, Row 2, Seat 8:
______________________________________________________________

1) Welcome to the New England Patriots, Malcolm Butler - - I saw enough of this kid tonight to make up my mind. He is dynamite, played the entire game, was his own island and covered for others when they screwed up in the run game. Give the kid a parking space.

2) Biggest disappointment (Yes, even bigger than Mallet, tonight): James Anderson. I write this with a very heavy heart because I was excited when they signed this guy a few months back. I LOVED the signing - - wrote that it seemed like a Roman Phifer type move. Felt that Anderson would be a quality 4th LB who could do it all and had the smarts to actually call plays as he did last year with the Bears......... THUMP! All I saw tonight was #55 over pursuing and lunging at RB's running past him as if he wasn't there. It was amateurish and shockingly bad. If he plays like this going forward, it will be a big problem for the team.

3) Bianca has lost a lot of weight and looks great - - Good job, Mrs. Wilfork!

4) Stephen Houston? Maybe professional football is not for you. Sorry.

5) Harmon, McCourty, T. Wilson and Chung are going to be our Safeties. Chung was all over the place and very active out there tonight. I believe the Ebner era is over.

6) I know Mallet will be getting a lot of blame, but the OL gave him zero protection, he never had time to even plant his feet. He's just not a scrambler.......which brings me to #7,

7) Garropolo. OK, this is another thing I did not expect tonight. All TC, I have been reading reports about how the kid looked like a deer in the headlights, was indecisive and that the pro game was too fast for him at this point.

Well.......

He owned the field tonight. Truly could have been 3 touchdowns instead of just one (Tyms DID make that catch in the EZ right under seats on the deep pass interference and my pin cushion Steven Houston coughed it up deep in the Red Zone). He worked with changing pace, from no huddle to slow down and back. He used both sides of the field. he threw screens, intermediates, sideline ropes, deep patterns, you name it. His pocket awareness was good and he is obviously the best scrambler of our QB's. Am I ready to crown him the #2 QB after preseason game #1? No. God forbid, if Brady goes down in game 1 in Miami, I want Mallet coming in, not Garropolo. However, by this time next year, if Garropolo continues to learn and work hard, I now have more confidence of him being able to master the NFL speed than I did before this game tonight. He made things happen and reminded me slightly of a taller Doug Flutie out there in his improv-ability.

8) Fedex Field is a travesty.

From the surface playing area (which I think was behind BB's strategy to work the first 2 strings hard in Richmond this week and keep them safely off Fedex' "field" tonight) to the dangerously undercooked $8 sausages at the concessions to the barely attached metal bleachers in the 400's section - - the 3rd most valuable franchise in the NFL should be ashamed of itself......but then, I remember Dan Snyder is its owner, and it all makes sense again.

Thanx Shmess....you told me earlier to relax a bit about Garrop and you were proven right...it looked just like you wrote on TV too.Garrop is a gamer. One thing you cannot have seen in person that we saw on the tube was the fact that Mallett made a number of poor decisions/reads. He had open receivers on plays he forced the ball in coverage.

Good point, Joe. Most definitely want to see a tape of this game. My eyes were more focused on the line play and the OL was getting absolutely blown up. They could not do anything, including in the running game. I think Mallet is just more of a pocket passer and JG can turn chaos in his favor a bit more like a Flutie. Also, Mallet had Orakpo and Kerrigan in his face, JG didn't.

Regarding what I wrote to you earlier today, honestly I had no idea JG was going to look anything proficient. I just thought whatever happened, that people should keep in mind that he wasn't signed by the Pats to be anything this year - -really a Brady-like redshirt year 2000 - - and that if he fell on his face it would be no disappointment to me at this time. His performance really floored me, but we need to remember, it was against some folks who will be greeting Walmart customers in a couple of weeks.

the biggest thing I did not like from tonight game was wilfork and Kelly got pushed a round and so did the starting OL as for mallet playing bad that's not a shock to me the only times he ever played ok in the preseason was when he was throwing to Edelman I think he will be cut before the season starts

of course I realize this but...it's STILL a football game and one can make judgements on traits being displayed.I figured the pro game was far too fast and his skills too meager to make it in this league...and I've watched a ton of his play so far in camp...but he passes the eye test.If the O line was bad for Mallett then it HAD to be at least as bad for JAG but he showed a pro's confidence and he MADE plays.

I watched him at practice last week and I swear the kid couldn't hit a freakin' stationary target. He overthrew receivers continually on reps. Guess reps aren't his forte yet because he was on point in game action tonight.

Butler has another game like this one and...well, somebody better be getting nervous. This kid can cover and he's been doing it all camp too. Very bright ray of sun in an otherwise gloomy night.
