There's No Way Mallett Makes This Team

During the game I stated the same thing on another post. I thought he looked a little better last year in a few preseason games. But he never showed that spark in a QB that seperates the better QB's. Thought this year he would make a leap. He is horrible. Cannot hit a touch pass, slow thinking process, bad pocket presence. His time is up. At least Jiimy G showed some spark. Long way to go but promising

Gwedd, you disagree? Mallett has been here for years and he has not done a thing. A backup to TB this long in the system should not be throwing balls at players feet. With all of our TEs injured we need that extra roster spot. If you think they should keep Mallett and not JAG I will listen but 3 QBs does not make sense considering the guy who will be a UFA is not playing even serviceable.

Unless there are huge changes next week, Mallett will be cut.

To be fair, I remember TB throwing balls at receiver's feet at times last season.

His press conference was like his play. Frustrated

They need Mallet because, despite anything else, he knows the system. We need him as a placeholder for a year while Jimmy G learns the vocabulary and the playbook.

You forget that all the kewl kids wanted Cassel booted because he had such a horrible preseason, but when Brady went down, he would have taken us into the playoffs, if only Favre hadn't reverted to form and lost against Miami.

We'll keep all 3 QB's because right now, despite his plays, the JAG is still a JAG and he's gonna need some time to work into the season.

I believe we also get compensatory draft picks if Mallet leaves the team next year, assuming we keep him.

I'm not sure his valuation was sufficient to trigger a comp pick.

Remember when people were saying the Patriots could fetch a 1st rounder for Mallett?

Hopefully tonight's game puts to rest such ridiculous notions in addition to the thought that they'd get anything in return other than a ham sandwich and a bag of chips.

Consider that gif "appropriated"

It's like "Deal or No Deal" and they just ended the round with only $5, $1 and a penny remaining..

We have no Tight Ends. Is Gronk going to play all the snaps? That is the last thing we need. Hooman? DJ?
Just keep 2QBS I dont even care who the backup is.

I see that the "let's wildly overreact to a handful of preseason snaps" floodgate has opened. I don't like Mallett either, but every criticism of him was equally applicable to 2008-preseason Cassel.

But seriously, Cassel also looked bad throughout the pre-season. The he made the team and everyone went WHAT??????? All the kewl kidz, you see, were G-Boyz and thought their binky was da shizzle.

Then Brady went down.......

Of course, I'll say this much for Gorropolo: he didn't look nervous at all. For his first ever NFL game, either as a fan in the stands or a player on the field, he was Mr Kool. I like that.

Cassel was doing what he was supposed to be doing, playing the plays the way he was supposed to be playing them, and keeping things on point, despite the situations he was being put in. That was in comparison to his competition, which was looking better on individual plays, but only because said competition wasn't working within the scheme of the offense.

Mallett was just sucking. Big difference.

I'll give it at least another week but garoppolo has got great mechanics ..... Better than any of the other guys who have been through here

Rather have an extra position player on the roster than worry about a placeholder or compensatory pick. He has never shown any promise in touch passes, speed of game or pocket presence. 30 yard passes may be better suited for him, but how often does a QB have in a game to do that on a consistent basis.

Not really. I agree re: Mallett, but I think you're misremembering Cassel. He was awful. There was nothing 'on point' about his performances

I'm not misremembering Cassel. I was one of the few who was defending him. And, from a "run the scheme" standpoint, his performances were on point. That was one of the huge differences between what he was doing and what O'Connell/Gutierrez were doing.

Hearing about his quick release is one thing, but seeing it in action was impressive. He gets it out in a hurry, and seems to have more touch on his deep passes than advertised. He didn't seem go have to make a lot of reads tonight, since Washington was playing vanilla D, but I think we can assume that that'll be the part of his game that's lagging behind. Assuming that that can be coached up, he's definitely an intriguing prospect.

Re: Mallett, we didn't see anything that would warrant changing your opinion of him, we know that he's a pocket passer with a cannon arm who struggles with touch passes and is bizarrely inconsistent. None of these are new developments. I don't like him, but Belichick likes him enough that he wasn't willing to trade him just a few months ago, so I wouldn't bet on him getting cut.

Do we know what he was being offered for him?
