Report: Brady to sit, Mallett to start tonight at Washington

That field blows. Fine by me

  • Pats get the draft pick one year earlier
  • Can't assume somebody will pay enough to Mallett for the Pats to get a 3rd round pick
  • The way the compensatory pick rules work, it all depends on how many free agents the Patriots sign versus how many they lose. In other words, they could net nothing once Mallett departs
  • The extra roster spot could be important, allowing the club to retain an extra WR, DB, etc.; that third QB is a roster spot they didn't have to use last year

Given the reports of JAG's performance thus far, sounds like it would be really risky to have him be the #2 guy this year. So while that last point is good in general, I can't see the Patriots going with anything other than 3 QBs at this point.

The way Mallett gets traded is if the Pats think there is someone on the market that they're comfortable with as a #2 while Garappolo is #3. They looked into Brady Quinn, who apparently decided to retire and join the Fox broadcast crew. The obvious guy that's out there is Kyle Orton - former McDaniels' starting QB, only 31 years old, just got cut by Cowboys and is apparently content with being a #2 guy. Given that it's McDaniels' offense, he wouldn't need much time to get up to speed here.

But this all assumes that someone - anyone - would be willing to give up high value for Mallett, and that the Pats would be comfortable with someone like Orton who missed half of camp. I'm skeptical on this. I think Mallett is starting simply because they want to make sure they're happy their #2 QB can start if it's needed.

Brady got a lot of reps in this week during the joint practice. I'm sure the coaches feel like 4-10 more plays with Brady under center isn't really necessary. Might as well give Mallett a go with the first teamers to see how he handles playing with the big boys.

Mallet will not even make this team. Nothing has changed from last year. Can't throw a touch pass if his life depended on it. Game seems too fast for him

Unless the Pats are looking to free up a roster spot why would they trade Mallett for anything less than a 3rd when they could get a (probable) 3rd compensatory pick next year by keeping him around?

After last night's performance, the Patriots would take a VHS copy of Caddie Shack II and a used ShamWow! for Ryan Mallett and his $938k salary for 2014.

He really tebowed an EASY pass to Lafell in the first.

One sad thing about Mallet even after looking as bad as he did is that he Cannot take a Hit. Mallet looks like Tarzan and plays like jane...no way a guy who sat behind a Hofer should look that bad. This is a Big Boys league Ryan you are just a gentle mouse. I see why the O'Brien in Houston wasn't intrerested now.
