Report: Brady to sit, Mallett to start tonight at Washington

I was expecting one or two series from Brady but apparently they want to get a long, detailed look at Mallett with the 1's. Nothing wrong with that. That said, I don't know if I would be comfortable with Brady sitting the entire preseason. Not only does he have a new guy in LaFell and second year guys that he needs to continue to build chemistry with, but he also went on record as stating that the lack of playing time in the preseason contributed at least somewhat to his knee injury in 2008.

Could be the plan was to get Mallett extensive time with the 1's in at least one of the first two preseason games, and they wanted to make sure Brady played a little for the home crowd in week 2.

Or they're showcasing him for a trade with Houston for Andre Johnson and JJ Watt.

True, but the beauty of these joint practices is giving providing some of what the preseason offers.

Except the quarterback doesn't really have to worry about a blindside (or an any side, for that matter) hit with the red jersey on. That's a big part of building a QB's psyche to get ready for the regular season.

At this stage in his career I think he has earned this and I really don't mind at all (actually looking forward to seeing Mallett).

Knowing Bill he will probably have him playing into the fourth quarter in the third preseason game anyway ;)

It's great being a homer!

9 times out of 10 you see what the team does and just look for a reason why it makes sense. The other time you say "beats me, but I'm sure BB knows what he's doing".

In this case it's obviously a balance between risking Brady in a meaningless context and getting him up to game speed. I'm very happy to trust the coaches with that decision.

I'm totally ok with this decision, that stadium has the worst field in NFL, no need to risk here, also Brady already torched them enough this week, more than that would be cruel.

I agree I think it is important for him to see game reps with the WRs. He will probably play a quarter next week, a half in week 3 of the preseason, and then sit again in week 4 of the preseason.

I am excited to see Mallett with the first team. You have to think that with Mallett and also Cousins both likely to receive significant reps QB needy teams will be in attendance.

Which teams are QB needy? Especially to the point of already giving up on plan A?

In last years, they've used the preseason as a learning opportunity for Mallett, having him work on the things he's not good at rather than try to show off what he can do well.

This year, I think it's time to unleash the dragon.

Ahh. Takes me back...

Anytime you can have a pre-season game that I don't have to hold my breath until Brady goes to the bench for good, I'm fine with.

Brady's been in the same system longer than his offenseive coaches have. No need to expose him in the pre-season, especially in game one. Play him a little in 2, maybe a half + in 3, then sit him again in game 4.

Sounds good to me. Brady sits and won't expose himself to possible injury and we find out how Mallett looks with the 1's.

I really don't care how much Brady plays during the preseason as long as he's ready to rock and roll in Miami on September 7.

I really doubt they are starting Mallett to showcase him for other teams. Getting a look with the 1's and 2's is a good way to evaluate him for the coming season as the backup since Jimmy certainly isn't ready to be number 2.

It could be for BOTH reasons though ......
