What will Dobson become?

What injury did Edelman have?
Edelman reportedly had a broken foot. Initially they tried rest but he reinjured it thus the surgery. While medical details are hard to come by, Dobson's injury sounds similar.

NE: Julian Edelman was reported in April, 2013 to be fully healed from a broken foot suffered during December 2012. However, he re-injured the foot on May 7, 2013 and has been wearing a walking boot since then

As I recall, Edelman had a minor setback pretty close to the season. Having surgery in May, then starting the season seems a pretty short time frame, but it doesn't really matter. Surgery on the foot generally means inserting a screw or pin or plate. Then again, different bones...they'd always like it to heal with rest, if possible.

Screws and plates are common. My brother got his foot ripped around360 degrees in a soccer game in high school and tore *everything* up but came back and played 4 years in college. Two plates, eight pins and 10 hours of surgery to put his foot back together and repair spiral fractures of the tibia and fibula. Peeled his skin up on each side to repair the damage like they were peeling back a banana. If he can come back from that, Dobson can come back from a couple of screws.

I still don't know what was so shocking about a screw in the foot as apart of surgery.

In any case, he seems about ready to return absent a setback.

IMHO, he is prospectively the most talented outside, or inside, WR we have.

I don't know who's shocked. Dobson's particular injury, the fifth metatarsal break, can have complications during recovery, which he seems to have had. There is also the possibility of re-injury, like the one Julio Jones had last year. Dobson , who I agree is their most talented WR, is not cutting or planting on the foot yet, so he may or may not be close to a return.

I'm reading the Howe article and all the articles spun off it and I'm feeling like I understand this "newsflash" or setback. I think ther media made up some recovery time, then went back and found he had a permanent screw put in, so they changed the recovery time they made up in the first place.

It's the only way these articles make sense.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reported a new detail about Aaron Dobson's surgery from back in March. According to Howe, the surgery required the insertion of a permanent screw to aid the healing process. As a result, Dobson's recovery has been moving slower than originally expected.

"Dobson didn't even begin running until July, and that progression ultimately leads to aggressive planting and cutting," says Howe. "The Patriots medical staff is making sure Dobson is able to handle the rigors of the job before allowing him on the field."

This is the Patriots site, quoting a Herald writer saying Dobson is healing slower than expected, based on finding out what the team knew in March, therefore this is a setback.

Put that in your logic machine. Who expected what, when and decided what the recovery time was supposed to be?

Not the team, they authorized the surgery to put the damn screw in in March! How could that news affect the teams prediction of recovery time now?

Fifth Metatarsal Fracture Surgery | American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society

What happens after surgery?
For the first seven to 14 days after surgery, you may be allowed to weight bear through the heel, but some surgeons will not allow you to bear any weight on the injured foot. This could last as long as six weeks. Weight bearing in a removable walking boot is allowed after that. Patients can expect to return to full activity three to four months after a typical fracture. This includes returning to sports. Some fractures may require bone grafting and have longer recoveries. The screw is not usually removed unless it causes discomfort.
Potential Complications
There are complications that relate to surgery in general. These include the risks associated with anesthesia, infection, damage to nerves and blood vessels, and bleeding or blood clots.
Some complications can result in the need for repeat surgery. The metatarsal fracture may not heal and can become a nonunion. Another rare but serious complication is a re-fracture after fixation. Some patients may be at greater risk for poor healing or re-fracture due to the shape of their foot. A high-arched foot or a heel that turns in can put extra pressure on the fifth metatarsal and affect healing.

Nice info, but I think you missed my point. Having a screw put in in March, isn't news in July. He's in the three or four month window (approx) and I haven't heard anything about a setback and I hear he's sprinting. The ball club, who usually doesn't announce timetables, could be taking a cautious approach, like they are with Easley.

They aren't required to honor some third party timetable.

I don't expect Randy Moss and he won't be Chad Jackson. One of the big strengths for both Dobson and Boyce was was smarts, and if that's accurate then he will get this offense and be able to give them the perimeter and downfield threat they were looking for.If he stays healthy he will be a really good pro and will give them really good production outside and downfield.

Unfortunately I see the guy as a BUST. Screw in foot......ALOTTA DROPPED BALLS......slow to read offense...not alotta high hopes for this guy .......

What do you guys think he will become? A legit #1? Chad jackson 2.0?

These injuries don't scare me yet. But i would like to see some good improvement this year and take that next step. If he stays the same as last i may get a bit worried

He has good hands (0 dropped passes as a senior) and he was getting good separation last season.

Chalk the drops up to rookie jitters and over thinking rather than just reacting.

He's fast, tall, intelligent. He just needs to put it all together. Too bad being out of TC is slowing his progress but I'd rather have him healthy for the season rather than re-injuring himself.

You probably thought Jerry Rice was a bust after one season too.

Not comparing the two, but judging a player by extremely common things to happen in a rookie season for a receiver is silly.

How do you know he was slow reading offenses? He's not a quarterback, and he appeared to either make the correct reads or just physically dominate his guy as he was open by a mile for many of his plays. I really don't know who you were watching.

Some people sound like they expect AJ Green/Julio Jones/Keenan Allen rookie seasons for every WR.

Those guys are the extreme rarities, most rookie WR seasons are pretty damn bad compared to those. Dobson had good production for missing 1/4 of the season.

A very good recent example would be Alshon Jeffery. He was also a 2nd round pick, and looked like a potential bust after year one, only had 24 catches, 367 yards, 3 TD's. But then made huge strides last year.

If he had been able to participate in the TC, i'd be expecting a great leap of production and ability for him. Now, with all the time he has lost, I am a little bit more cautious when measuring my hopes. Granted, I can't shake the bad vibe of the old WR drafted in the last few years off my body

45-561 - Rookie year stats of Dez bryant.
41-623- 3rd year stats of vincent jackson. previous years are lower.

If dobson can become anything close to bryant then that makes me happy. jeez guys stop aiming for the stars with these guys. they need time to develop. And aaron dobson will become a stud so long as his health is kept in check. Theres a few more guys that didn't turn into studs imediately. I foresee dobson killing it this year so long as his health is 100%
