Edited for accuracy. There's a big difference between Aaron Rodgers' scenario and Mallett's.
Aaron Rodgers and the Packers had to put up with the Favre Annual Retirement Tango. Conversely, Brady wants to play until 2050.
So Mayock admitted he is insane.
Mayock didn't say he's the next TFB. But if you were a rational JEST fan(*), wouldn't you take Mallett over anyone there?
(*)Yes, I know that's like talking about unicorns.
I like Mallet BUT, Mayock might as well be on the Patriots payroll, he is not exactly an unbiased opinion.
Mayock is a HOF Belichick jock sniffer. If the Pats got a 7th for Mallet I'd be hppy.
This man has spent more time than all 3 of us combined watching Mallett, and probably by a pretty wide margin..
only if they threw in JJ Watt tooMallet is going bye bye.
We should trade him for Houston's 1st rounder.
Why? he is our number 2. We rate him and we have a rookie backup. If BB thinks he is damn good and no one is offering what he is worth to this team i.e a nfl standard QB if TB goes down. Then why would you trade him?I cant imagine anybody else think Mallet is that good or else he would have been dealt
I didn't think the QB Transition tag is that high. Is it? Transition tags are meant to encourage negotiations toward player movement, but with an out for the Team.
Then offer Mallett $6-10 million and let another team match or beat it as a counteroffer. The object of the exercise is to keep him if economically feasible, or obtain a good compensation, if not.
The point I was making is that one year of grooming for an FCS level QB may not be enough, before he is a ready backup QB.

Maybe, but not necessarily. I remember multiple occasions during the college season and even afterwards, during the scouting process, where he publicly mentioned he had only watched/broken down tape of only two or three games of specific prospects, and I wondered "what the hell do you do all season, Mike?"
I personally never noticed a Mayock bias towards the Patriots, and I agree with the point of your post, I just think we tend to hold some of the "TV scouts" in too high regard.
Tom Brady shines, defense dominates and other Patriots camp blogservations from Washington - Andy Hart - Patriots.com--NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock watched the entire session and then reportedly raved about what he saw from Ryan Mallett, despite what was seemingly universally panned as a sub-par day from the New England backup.
A few Ryan Mallett thoughts - espnBostonSo while we are interested to see if Mallett can take the next step in preseason action, and have liked what we have seen at times in camp, we didn't come away with the same strong feelings about Mallett as Mayock did Monday.
Greetings from Richmond: Gronk stays behind | Comcast SportsNet - CSNNE.comGiardi isn't impressed with Mallett whatsoever.
"It's Year 4," he said. "I just don't see that level of comfort, and I don't think he's taken that big a step."
I think he would prefer to compete for a starting job somewhere (anywhere) instead of be a career backup. He will be a UFA and will be able to select the situation which best suits him.As to why Ryan might accept, I think he might prefer the position of Aaron Rodgers versus say Blaine Gabbert or the dozen, misused QB candidates of the rechartered Browns.
