Mayock: Pats have legitimate Starting NFL QB in Mallett

If JAG implodes, BB will audition & sign sign a vet game management capable QB for next season as backup.

As to why Ryan might accept, I think he might prefer the position of Aaron Rodgers versus say Blaine Gabbert or the dozen, misused QB candidates of the rechartered Browns.

There's a big difference between Aaron Rodgers' scenario and Mallett's.

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers had to put up with the Favre Annual Retirement Tango. Conversely, Brady wants to play until he's 50.

So Mayock admitted he is insane. :)

Mayock didn't say he's the next TFB. But if you were a rational JEST fan(*), wouldn't you take Mallett over anyone there?

(*)Yes, I know that's like talking about unicorns.

In fairness I was editing it to put a :) in. I do not love Vick or what his name the second year guy, but wonder if Mallet would beat them out. Especially if the competition is fixed for Geno Smith like Vick claims (hey, I remembered his name).

OK, pretend you're Belichick for a second. What would you offer Mallett—and why would he accept it?
This. Hey Ryan, how would like to be the next Zolak? You're already halfway there. Sign right here on the dotted line buddy. You're the greatest #2 since Scotty!

I like Mallet BUT, Mayock might as well be on the Patriots payroll, he is not exactly an unbiased opinion.

Mayock is a HOF Belichick jock sniffer. If the Pats got a 7th for Mallet I'd be hppy.

Obviously every single person with an opinion about football players has been right and wrong at different points in their lives (including BB), but I find this type of post really distasteful.

Mayock is a highly-trained professional who spends a ton of time looking at film. You can disagree with his opinion, but to dismiss it without a single thought just because you perceive a bias is an incredibly poor way to view the world.

This man has spent more time than all 3 of us combined watching Mallett, and probably by a pretty wide margin. Certainly you don't have to defer to him, but at least read what he's saying, try to objectively understand what he's saying, THEN form an opinion. Instead, it seems like you've made up your minds, and anything that supports it is good and anything that isn't is instantly dismissed.

Mayock has been wrong before, and he'll be wrong again no doubt. But at least he's willing to look at all the info out there and learn from his mistakes, which is more than I can say for many posters here who seem to have it all figured out...

Mallet is going bye bye.

We should trade him for Houston's 1st rounder.

:)

Maybe, but not necessarily. I remember multiple occasions during the college season and even afterwards, during the scouting process, where he publicly mentioned he had only watched/broken down tape of only two or three games of specific prospects, and I wondered "what the hell do you do all season, Mike?"

I personally never noticed a Mayock bias towards the Patriots, and I agree with the point of your post, I just think we tend to hold some of the "TV scouts" in too high regard.

I cant imagine anybody else think Mallet is that good or else he would have been dealt

This is a bit funy for all of the Mallet haters out there. It's more than just a couple of pats fans that think the guys is good. Saying "i'm not sold on him" is easy to say because he hasn't played any games. That doesn't mean he isn't starting calibre. Hell i'm not sold on half the starting QB's in the NFL... yet they start none the less.

Why? he is our number 2. We rate him and we have a rookie backup. If BB thinks he is damn good and no one is offering what he is worth to this team i.e a nfl standard QB if TB goes down. Then why would you trade him?

To be fair, I think he said the exact same thing about Jimmy Clausen.

There's a lot of buzz about Mallett, and admittedly it's intriguing. But to be totally honest, I have a hard time mustering up much excitement, because unless things go very badly, he'll never get a chance to play a meaningful snap here anyway.

I didn't think the QB Transition tag is that high. Is it? Transition tags are meant to encourage negotiations toward player movement, but with an out for the Team.

Then offer Mallett $6-10 million and let another team match or beat it as a counteroffer. The object of the exercise is to keep him if economically feasible, or obtain a good compensation, if not.

The point I was making is that one year of grooming for an FCS level QB may not be enough, before he is a ready backup QB.

As to why Ryan might accept, I think he might prefer the position of Aaron Rodgers versus say Blaine Gabbert or the dozen, misused QB candidates of the rechartered Browns.

Mallett has already sat on the bench for as long as Rodgers did. A full season longer, by the time his rookie contract is up. Just like Rodgers, he has to get a chance to play eventually. It almost certainly won't happen here, so has to happen somewhere else.

I agree with the spirit of what you're saying, but I think it's also a bit unfair as well. Breaking down tape is a pretty intensive process, certainly not the same thing as watching a game. I watched every single Tom Brady pass last year (while drinking a beer and eating pizza) but I didn't get as much out of it as some scouts would by breaking down a few games. I wouldn't be surprised if they spent more time on a few games than I did watching every game.

Also, remember that NFL teams have a bunch of guys working together to analyze all of the top prospects, while the TV guys don't. I'm not sure about last season, but in 2012, the Patriots had a team of 19 people in the personnel department.

And even knowing Mayock only broke down a few games, I'd still bet that's more than the two guys who instantly dismissed his opinion, even though neither could even spell Mallett correctly. If you're going to call out an expert, at least know how to spell the name of the guy we're talking about.

--NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock watched the entire session and then reportedly raved about what he saw from Ryan Mallett, despite what was seemingly universally panned as a sub-par day from the New England backup.

So while we are interested to see if Mallett can take the next step in preseason action, and have liked what we have seen at times in camp, we didn't come away with the same strong feelings about Mallett as Mayock did Monday.

Giardi isn't impressed with Mallett whatsoever.

"It's Year 4," he said. "I just don't see that level of comfort, and I don't think he's taken that big a step."

Let's see how he looks in the games.

I think he would prefer to compete for a starting job somewhere (anywhere) instead of be a career backup. He will be a UFA and will be able to select the situation which best suits him.

I would actually lose respect for the guy if he stayed in New England, still content at age 30 to be Tom Brady's personal clipboard holder.
