Mayock: Pats have legitimate Starting NFL QB in Mallett

I like Mallet BUT, Mayock might as well be on the Patriots payroll, he is not exactly an unbiased opinion.

Pat Kirwin & Co on SIRIUS also waxed enthusiastic about The Hammah. Exceeding my lowly expectations early on. Note that Boston writers unavoidably see him after watching HOF Brady so he suffers in comparison. I hope The Hammah has a good pre-season and gets an opportunity to contend for an NFL starter's job next summer.

I agree I do think he has what it takes to be a starter he will just need to be on the right team. Obviously he wont have the starting job in NE but with the right team I feel like he could be a good starting QB.

Mike Mayock's analysis is the same as mine, all along.

As well as the now conventional analysis that Jimmy Garappolo, a product of very low football program, will need the grooming Cassell, and Mallett have received and even Brady needed too. All of whom were products of big time college football programs and coaching. The loony analysts who this spring were predicting Brady might lose his position to a rookie QB have grown silent.

There is still an enormous difference between being a competent NFL starting QB, as Mallett is ready to become, and the GOAT, Tom Brady. For the Draftnik's wanting a 7th rounder to play with, by trading Ryan, please retreat to your basements. Belichick proves once that he has no competition from the likes of your [sic, lack of] keen vision and evaluation of QB talent.

I hope they never have to prove it, but I believe Mallet could do a better job than Cassell did in the 2008 exigency.

I think Jimmy G is a raw talent, but I think it will be a discussion and concern to resign Mallett in the 2015 off-season.

I don't think any one with, oh, ten brain cells to rub together was saying that Brady would lose the starting gig to Garoppolo this year. (Now if Manziel had fallen to the Pats in the first. . . . :p )

OK, pretend you're Belichick for a second. What would you offer Mallett—and why would he accept it?

I'd Transition tag him. TB's contract allows that much to allocate to a second QB and not even equal the payouts to Peyton and several other first line QBs.

After 4 years hard work grooming, Mallett may feel he deserves a shot at inheriting a fully rebuilt, and young Super Bowl contender. If it were me, I'd hope for the opportunity with the Pats, rather than accept the sentence handed out trying to resuscitate the likes of the Jaguars or Browns etc, given their front office and ownership incompetence and lack of competitive talent.

The high level of the Transition tag would ensure a high pick if he chose to go, or a high compensation negotiation with a team trading for him. Despite how well Brady is playing today, we don't know how good or even healthy he will be in 2015 or immediately beyond.

Based on 2014, the transition tag for QBs in 2015 will be about $15 million, fully guaranteed the moment Mallett signs the tender, and the only compensation the Pats get if someone else signs him to an offer sheet instead is right of first refusal.

Mayock is the same bum that kept trumpeting and was adamant that Chandler Jones would be the best defensive player in the 2012 draft. What does he know :-/
With all due respect to Kuechly, if Jones stays healthy, I think Mayock was dead on with that one.
As far as Mallet goes, we'll find out next year (hopefully not this year) how good he can be, won't we?

...as did Redskins beat writers. It's definitely not just Mayock.

Here's to there being some truth in it. Let the Pats have a legitimate backup for this season, and let the buzz and bidding war for Mallett's 2015 services begin!

Mayock is a HOF Belichick jock sniffer. If the Pats got a 7th for Mallet I'd be hppy.

I didn't think the QB Transition tag is that high. Is it? Transition tags are meant to encourage negotiations toward player movement, but with an out for the Team.

Then offer Mallett $6-10 million and let another team match or beat it as a counteroffer. The object of the exercise is to keep him if economically feasible, or obtain a good compensation, if not.

The point I was making is that one year of grooming for an FCS level QB may not be enough, before he is a ready backup QB.

As to why Ryan might accept, I think he might prefer the position of Aaron Rodgers versus say Blaine Gabbert or the dozen, misused QB candidates of the rechartered Browns.

With all due respect, but the Patriots would be crazy to offer that, and Mallett even crazier to accept it. The Aaron Rodgers path had him sitting on the bench for 3 seasons. Under this scenario, 2015 would be Mallett's 5th on the bench. Why would Mallett want to spend his entire 20s on the bench? Isn't 4 years of training enough? He's going to want a chance to actually start in the NFL.

The Pats selected Garappolo to replace Mallett, and spend low cap dollars on a backup QB. What if they can't resign McCourty because of the $6m paid to Mallett for sitting on the bench? In this salary cap era, they can't afford to spend that much on a backup QB.
