Patriots claim RB Tyler Gaffney for 2015

good, good let the hate flow within them. seriously though this is a 6th round pick why do Panthers fans care? Tyler Gaffney might contribute next season but really I think he is just insurance at the RB position next season

Look at it this way = He was a workhorse bell-cow RB who received 330 touches last season, in a competitive enough Pac-12 conference. Those 330 touches (3rd most last year in all of the NCAA) equated to over 1700 yards rushing, and a whopping 21 TDs on the ground for the 2013 season.

He also has nice size at 6'1" and 220+ lbs, and ran a 4.49 in the 40 yard dash.

He's also a 4 year player and graduate from Stanford, meaning that he's obviously mature, smart, and likely fits the mold that the Pats look for in a player.

Now...there are obviously reasons why he lasted until the 6th round just as well, but this is a fine move that should add healthy competition for next season. In the process, Belichick also screwed over GM Dave Gettleman again, who was the GM with the NYG when we grabbed Jake Ballard off waivers. The Panthers not only lost out on their 6th round pick, but they lost about 100k in the process, since we only are responsible for the base salary, IIRC.

They'll carry him until final cutdowns on Aug.30th a month from now where they can then place him on IR, without having to worry about him going through the waivers process.
So We have to add him to our roster projections? When we IR him, can we sign a TE2? Will be an interesting time...

Gaffney looks like the guy at the beginning of the Geico oldest trick in the book commercial.

The way I see it is this:

The Giants and the Panthers didn't think enough of these guys to use up a roster spot to protect them on their way to the IR.

The Patriots are.

The same can be said about Greg Salas. The Eagles got him because Belichick wasn't willing to keep him safe on the roster.

Some people know these rules better than I do, but the Giants and Panthers have no mechanism to put an injured player on IR before the season begins. They must clear waivers first. The intent is to keep teams from stockpiling players. "Waived Injured" also means the team is responsible for paying the player and providing his health care and rehab until he recovers from his injury. The salary counts against the cap.

Every GM knows these rules and the risk associated with placing a player on waivers.

The way this is going Bob Kraft should change the team name to the New England Knee Braces.

His gait kind of reminds me of Robert Smith, the Vikings RB from the 90's or whenever it was.

Robert Smith was big in the 90s.

This "unwritten rule" is pure garbage. There is no unwritten rule. The reality is that teams don't put in claims for these players because they are not worth signing, not because of some fictitious rule. If the Patriots decided they wanted to put Easley on IR does anyone really think there wouldn't be 31 teams putting in a claim on him? The idea that there would be team holding back because of some unwritten rule is ludicrous.

Call me not exited the odds of him doing next to nothing next year based on Patriot histoy with these kind of guys is like 95%.

Steve from Fall River welcome back, your negativity is always missed.

Ivan is The Man in outing posters!
I do admit I thought Ivan was Mrs Welker last year, but I'm over that now.

When it comes to the Patriots, your lack of excitement surprises none of us.

You should look at increasing your vitamin D intake, you sound permanently depressed. ;)

Whether or not a bunch of fans are upset doesn't mean Carolina team leadership is upset. They surely understood the risk and were perfectly willing to assume it.

Cue up Miguel's analysis from a month ago. He produced a long list of first-year IR'ed players in his "red shirt" analysis from 2013 - none are on the 2014 team. Doesn't mean it can never happen, but the odds are long.

1.) By my count 14 rookies (Hines, Moe, Tuinei, Fisher, Ford, Mattes, Haggerty, Patterson, Chris McDonald, Grissom, Zusevics, Kamar Aiken, Anthony Rashad White, Schwab) were placed on IR before the start of the 2013 regular season. Only Mattes is on the Patriots roster now.
2.) Games on IR do not count in the credited season calculations. The number of credited season a player has determines their minimum salary for that season. By going on IR his rookie season a player is in effect lowering their salary for their first 4 seasons of the NFL career. Most rookies will have split contract which lowers the salary from 420K to 303K. The total difference over the 4 years is 342,000.
I share this information because every offseason we hear the suggestion that the Patriots should/will a red-shirt a player, especially a low round draft pick or UDFA.
Note that Mattes was released, so they were zero for 14.

Call me not excited: the odds of him doing next to nothing next year based on Patriot histoy with these kind of guys is like 95%.
People have labeled this statement negative.
Actually, given recent history as researched by Miguel, it's optimistic.
Just facts.

Hines, Moe, Tuinei, Fisher, Ford, Mattes, Haggerty, Patterson, Chris McDonald, Grissom, Zusevics, Kamar Aiken, Anthony Rashad White, Schwab

To be fair, most of those players were camp bodies/PS fodder only. Moreover, most of them weren't injured at the time they were brought in, the way Ballard, Armstead, and now Gaffney were.

Financially its a steal for the Pats, the Panthers eat his signing bonus and the Pats have him under contract for four years at 6th round money! Of course, stashing a guy for a year, hasn't exactly worked out well for the Pats recently (Ballard, Gregory), but who knows. The only real downside to this, is that once again BB has broken an unwritten rule by putting in a waiver claim on an injured rookie, so hopefully this does not come back to bite him, when another team decides to poach one of his players.

Anyway this kid is not that long shot like an udfa. We don't know if it is going to work but it's a player drafted in the 6th round in the most deeper draft ever, any other year he's a 4th, maybe 5th rounder, where you draft RB's that are not blue chips.

It was a good acquisition and the Panthers fans are upset just because it's the Patriots.

As they say, unwritten rules are worth the paper they are printed on.

Gaffney will no doubt be a great success in the NFL, provided, that is, his OL blocks the way they did for him at Stanford.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out......

They are mad, like this guy here (who is probably more confused than anything)

But that level of confusion and all the subsequent hate want to respond to that thread with:

Twitter: @DangerZone: Bad day for Carolina as the Patriots also claim Panthers WR Phill Brown.

After skimming through those comments can anyone help me out with which coach was it and with what Player ho was it that did the same thing to us?

And now that the Patriots are the only one to not honor this "unwritten rule" thing is starting to rear its head again, I want to be armed with the truth.

I remember people saying that other teams had done this to us even before Jake Ballard, can anyone help me out with who they were?
Garrett Mills. Vikings Brad Childress. I forget who we stole from their roster. Bill was pissed.
