DE Will Smith signed by Patriots

$15 grand to take a look.
The lack of any market for his services and his minimum wages cost leads me to believe it's gonna take a miracle of divine intervention for Mr. Smith to be a go in September. Have him follow David Ortiz around to figure out his source for the fountain of youth......ahem

All deals this time of year are going to be for short money.

Maybe Smith won't make the team, but I really don't get why anyone is looking down on this signing. Based on the contract, it is extremely low-risk, high-reward. If it doesn't work out, you don't really lose anything. If it does work out, it would be a great addition for a salary cap charge that would be less than Jake Bequette's.

Nobody gets excited about buying a car for full price or buying a stock at it's peak. But when it comes to the Patriots, seems like few appreciate a potential good deal.

It's basically a free lottery ticket. Even if the odds are against winning and you don't believe it'll amount to anything, it doesn't hurt to just check it out.

As for the lack of market, why do you think that means anything? Last year, the Jaguars, one of the worst teams in the league cut Daryl Smith, their franchise leading tackler. He languished for several months until after the draft, when the Ravens picked him up for depth. He emerged as their new mike and recently signed a 4-year deal for $16M.

The same offseason, Shaun Phillips was cut from the Chargers and sat on the market for almost 2 months before signing for 1 year, $1M with the Broncos. He would lead the team in sacks as the Broncos went to the Super Bowl.

Every year, the league is wrong about some players. We've seen it ourselves with free agents nobody wanted like Andre Carter and Mark Anderson. Or guys who were cut by crappy teams that turned out to be players like Danny Woodhead and Chris Jones. Or guys disregarded in the draft by every single team over several rounds like Julian Edelman and Tom Brady. Or guys we held in higher regard than anyone else in the draft like Seabass and Mankins.

None of this means Will Smith is going to amount to anything here or anywhere. But I really don't see any harm in this contract. It's only upside, and I don't understand how people can't see the value in these types of deals.

I'm not sure where you're coming up with this theory. Every offseason, regardless of how crappy the previous offseason's signings were, people here rave about the so-called (sometimes rightly) good deals BB finds.

Borg hates a Patriots free agent signing?...I'm shocked...never saw THAT coming...

Yeah, some people do, that's true. But I also I find a lot of people who just hate every signing that doesn't involve a multi-year mega-deal or a Pro Bowl player they haven't traded for on their Madden rosters.

And I was being a bit sarcastic, but it is true that most people tend to buy stocks when they're going up rather than going down. But that's a whole other discussion... :p

This is a new angle...frustration that the Patriots paid too LITTLE for a FA! :p

Like Carter and Anderson 2011, Smith is reclamation project on short money. An excellent signing, IMO, in that IF he's healthy enough to contribute he's a perfect fit. (And legitimate 4-3 DEs run scarce in this year's draft class.)

He really should not be the third DE and with no guaranteed money the Patritos dont appear to be expecting that from him.

I don't think this has been mentioned, but I really hope he doesn't shoehorn his son onto the team too.

Please
I got stuck on 2 legs of a transcontinental flight seeing that awful movie twice. Even not watching, it was terrible.

Not Warren Buffet.

I am not sold on Smith making the team but the signing was a great. First his sheer presence as a mentor to Jones, Buchanan, Bequette, and Moore is huge, and second if he does regain his form that will be huge. Anyone who complains about this signing is just looking for something to complain about and they have decided to go with this today.

I think it's as simple as if he's recovered, he makes the team. If he's healthy, he's part of a 4 man DE rotation with Ninkovich, Jones, and Buchanan. There's no way that Bequette beats out a healthy Smith.

When I read threads like this, it seems as though I have entered a parallel universe.. do not understand what is not to like about this signing.

Reiss' roster projection today has Smith staying....Kelly out

There's no way Bequette beats out a Smith with two torn ACL's and a broken back as far as I'm concerned. How that man is still on the team is absolutely beyond me.

Eh, Reiss or anyone else has no idea at this point if Smith or Kelly will make the roster. He's completely just guessing right now.

Reiss does much more than guess. Getting him to scribe an opinion is difficult enough....so when he does come forward with projections, I tend to believe their is method in his madness. For him to knock off Kelly at such an early date is very interesting IMO. Just saying
A long way to go no doubt
