Wth the practice just about to enter the best 20 minutes of the day ( Team GL and 2 minute), the sky literally opened up. I mean it went from dry to you are totally soaked in less than a minute If you were looking to describe a "down pour" this was it. Within a 2 minutes even the Pats left the field.

But before that there was still a lot to see on a typical New England day which saw the practice start under cloudy sky, endure a long stretch of sunshine, and end with the deluge. Here are some things I thought were interesting.

1. Gronk actually did a bit less today. He didn't even wear padded pants. They are taking him very slow.

2. Social media is an amazing thing to an old foggy like me. When the team first breaks down into position groups we couldn't help notice that there were 2 new WR's, 84 and 14. Within a few minutes you have people checking their phones and voila, we get the info.

What was even more interesting was that Tyms looked like he belonged right away. Tall and lanky he made a few nice catches an made an impression. Since I got home, I found out he's had 2 years in the league (mostly on PS) so it made more sense. Both the new kids have some size.

3 Josh Boyce is very slowly putting together a very nic camp for himself. He consistently is getting behind CB's on deep routes and has been much more consistent in catching the ball than last season.

4. Also it was DJ Williams turn to shine among the TE's. He had a couple of tightly contested catches against the D in group work..

5. I took the time to watch closely the DL today. And as a former coach, I'd like to give a tip of the hat to the Pats DLine coaches Brendon Daly and Patrick Graham. As a group I was very impressed on how low they played and with good leverage. To a man they all showed great knee bend and strong hands. When an entire groups of mostly tall guys do that consistently, that my friend is due to good coaching.

6. Someone asked about Zack Moore in my last post, so I tried to get a better look at him today. I think the best description of him I can give is....Michael Buchannon of last year. He certainly looks the part. He consistently plays with a great knee bend, good arm position and seems very athletic. But like Buchannon of last season, he seems a little "light in the pants" vs the run. Nate Solder moved him down the line rather easily on a couple of occasions I noticed.

As of this minute, I he looks exactly like he's supposed to be, given his draft status and where he played in college. A perfect prospect for the PS. Like Buchannon I like what I saw. He has a good burst, speed and athleticism, but needs more strength and bulk, and hundreds of more reps. The gap between his initial move and finding the ball is too big right now. Not surprising like I said. The fact he plays with such good leverage tells me he's coachable. In 2-3 years, this could be turn out to be a great pick.

7. I took a look at Flemming as well. Certainly big and powerful enough, but I wonder if he has the quickness and agility to be a starter on this level. Very early in the process, but comparing him and Solder athletically right now is like comparing Jupiter with Pluto

8 The OL mixed and matched a lot with the first group, with Kline getting a lot of reps at both RG, and LG. Wendell, Connolly and Stork all took reps at C. Cannon got the majority of the starting reps at RT, while Volmer subbed in with him as well as playing back up LT.

9. It looks to me that Volmer is not to where he was before his injury. He doesn't seem quite as quick and agile. Hopefully that will come as camp moves on. However anyone looking for clues as to what the starting OL is going to look like by who is playing with what group, is purely guessing

10. Interesting that in the 3 practices that I've been to, I have yet to see the dreaded "back shoulder" throw thrown even once. Maybe they are waiting for Dobson to return to bring that out.

11. They did spend a lot of time on one of my favorite routes. Its the one where the receiver sprints up field and at 5 yed fakes an in cut, and breaks it back up the seam. When Welker ever got deep, this was the route he usually used

12. 4 two hour practices and a day off. As a former coach and player this almost offends me. Its the fundamentals that get lost when you lose this much practice time. That and player development. Guys like Moore will loose more than half the reps he would have gotten if TC were run like it was prior to the new CBA. That's almost a year of development time lost. Reps that could mean the difference between him having an NFL career and not having one. It also means I am going to have to endure ANOTHER season of watching pro tackle in a manner I wouldn't expect HS kids to tackle. Today the Pats spent a total of 7 minutes working on open field form tackling,

13. Muck like the OL, the "other safety" was also a mix and match with Wilson, Harmon and Chung all getting work with McCourty. On one play where Wilson ended up with deep responsibility, he made it all the way to the sideline to break up a pass where Boyce had beaten the CB. That's good range for a guy some think of as a SS.

Well that's my 2 cents. The rest you can get from the many other sources available. I'm constantly amazed by how much I miss and how much more there is to see. See you next week.

I can't thank you enough for posting these reports. I look forward to them because the general internet seems lite in it's reporting. Even Reiss' reports seem a bit lite to me this TC. I really wish I could be there with binoculars and a notepad. Anyway, thank you again. Until you write again . . .

Boyce is one of my guys, I still think he may have the most upside of the now Sophomore WR. I'm hoping for him to be a Cruz type, quick enough for the slot but fast and (just) big enough for the outside.

I think they'll squeeze him onto the roster, PS may be tough to keep him. Tough competition for spots though.

Tavon seems to be a slight surprise so far, many had given him up for dead but he seems to have shown up for camp and D-Mac really talked him up.

Phil Perry works a lot with Tom E Curran on CSNNE breaking down each practice...here's today's snippets...seems Hooman may have gotten dinged up.

Ken, I got up there late and decided to do some shopping and eat at the Scene. I look forward to sunnier days. Today's drenchfest makes all the old bones in my body ache. I cannot thank you enough for your input today.

I may make Tuesday if its a pads day. Anybody know if there's any food left at the Scene?

wiseguy...I'm on a diet..:(

3 weeks ago I quit all alcohol during the week, lift more and increased gym time (No I'm not gym rat) but have yet to budge more than a pound downward:(

Thanks for the link, J. Always good to see how others see it. BTW- his Devlin comment reminds me of something I originally wanted to put in my post. It seems Devlin has been creating quite a niche for himself on the offense, and for an Ivy League guy is a bit of a character as well. Both he and his offensive teammates reacting vociferously when he plants a hit on a defender.

Wilson was one of the guys (along with McCourtey and Logan Ryan) who went to Arizona for Revis' bootcamp. Probably no surprise that those four are showing well in the early camp practices. Hard to argue with a young NFL DB doing what Revis does to prepare....

Yea, my hot developing opinion is that Wilson wins the starting SS job next to McCourty. One thing Wilson did do well his rookie year was cover TEs man2man. If Wilson can prove he can cover the deep field better, I think they'd love having 2 safeties on the field that can cover man2man really well.

3 months ago I went to a Chinese doctor in Boston's Chinatown...he had me stop all coffee, bread, potatoes, cream, processed meats. He had me making corn silk tea from the husks of corn until I found a boxed brand. 2 cups a day. Green tea the rest of the time. Chicken, fish, lean red meat, and turkey turkey turkey. Beans...5 bean salad using all the big beans, red kidneys chick peas etc.He does acupressure once a week and electrical impulse therapy on my legs.

So far I'm down almost 45 pounds..the circulation in my feet and toes has increased and eliminated dead skin buildup. I am absolutely amazed at the difference. He makes me walk walk walk and walk some more. It was tough getting into a daily routine at first because you need time to walk 2 or 3 miles but I forced myself to budget part of the day early and I walk everywhere now instead of taking the short cuts.

You burn fat when you sleep, PWP...in case you didn't know. If you don't get 7/8 hours a night you won't burn fat as fast. Plus, the bread and starches are killers. I'm 60 and any starch I ingest just converts to fat. Kills me because I grew up on crusty Italian bread, pasta and soft cheeses.

I belong to two health clubs but I prefer Anytime Fitness. I lift twice a week now but always do the treadmill and bike for 45 minutes. This eats up time but if you want the results you have to commit.

No one is a saint out there, but alcohol will screw up any regimen. There is no such thing as "lite" beer. Drink suds and your body will convert the contents to fat. Vodka and fruit juices might be a pretty good way around this pesky problem but I don't really imbibe anymore since I drank the GNP of the entire European Union in my 30's and 40's. The key for anyone who is reaching middle age is metabolism. You have to find a way to ramp it and keep it ramped. I get up and eat blueberries or strawberries for breakfast now, drink a cup of corn silk tea, stay with veggies and fruit during the day and eat a good dinner. Plus I eat unsalted pistachios, almonds and even cashews whenever I get hunger pains. Salt is another metabolic murderer. Salt is in everything, it's ridiculous. You eat a fast food
breakfast sandwich somewhere and they say "only 350 calories!!!"...yeah and 1300 mgs of salt. Your body needs salt but anything over 2500 mgs a day will raise blood pressure, a risk factor for any of us old codgers. Try to limit excessive salting off your food and use peppers of all kinds as a flavor enhancer.Unsalted butter sucks so use olive oil instead of butter when you cook.

You know your own body better than anyone else. If you are putting in the work but remaining status quo, it's gotta be either sleep related or diet.

I'm not as concerned with who the starters are as I am with the Pats having six NFL caliber DBs to rotate thru various coverage packages and withstand the inevitable injuries. If Wilson and Ryan can play, the Pats have seven:

Revis
Browner
Dennard
Arrington
McCourty
Ryan
Wilson

That's seven deep anchored by the league's top veteran shut-down CB. If they are all healthy and on the roster to start the season, that will let Belichick coach up some of them to really master roles in specialized sub packages.

You could be trading fat for muscle. . . .

Sorta like how Matt Light and Nate Solder are both around 310#, but it looks very different on Solder v. Light.

IMHO Wilson was drafted to be not only a SS, but a Joker SS/LB hybrid. As such his experience as a force CB, would stand him in good stead in short coverage.

It did not surprise me that he had problems covering deep as a centerfield FS is expected to do. That was NOT in his talent profile.

But back then the Pats had no Safeties to speak of, and played Left and Right Safeties while they experimented. Eventually McCourty was moved from CB to play mostly centerfield FS. By then Tavon was in the doghouse for his repeated failures at deep centerfield coverage.

When the Pats imported a pair of Man-to-man CBs, and commensurately decided to play more Cover 1, single deep S, (i.e McCourty, Ryan/Jamea), the need for a SS with little deep talent re-appeared. Hence the resurrection of both Tavon Wilson and Patrick Chung, who are relatively able close to the line, and not very good in deep coverage.

That is the genius of good coaching. You adopt the strategy to fit the talents of the players that you have. Kudos to Bill, Matt and the rest of his coaching staff.

Gymrats will want you to get into the 10% bodyfat bracket, for that quick, explosive first step when walking.

Losing weight is a complicated affair. What works for one person wont for another.
If you are interested in learning about why so many people struggle with weight issues
I recommend two books ( on amazon.com)

1. The Metabolic Storm (not a diet but some detailed information on metabolism)
and
2. The Insulin Resistance Diet

Revis didn't have the usual 5 ints? He sucks. Browner laying the wood

I think you're on a good path. I'm onboard except for eliminating coffee, my major drug. I love to eat but eat far less now that I'm a geezer in my 60s. Lots of fruit and minimal carbs. Olive oil, no butter. No processed meats. Watch salt. No fast food ever. Fish if at a nice restaurant. Wife is great at nutrition. Lifting several times per week now and lots of cardio on the elliptical which is as close to x/c skiing a sport I loved and rips weight off you. My kickboxing place shut down so I'm stuck with machines. Walking is great too but somehow I don't do enough. Just checked now as I got home from gym. Went from 193 to 189 which is OK. 1st Goal is 184. I'm only 5' 9". More ripped than gymrat now though. :)
