Just noticed that this response was bordering on the line of a "know it all," so my apologies to pdangle. It wasn't intended that way.

I don't want to come off like I think I know it all, b/c that's far from the truth. I'm here to learn.

I don't believe that they'll pay that kind of cap hit for Revis' 2nd year, but hey---anything's possible, although very unlikely.

A much more appropriate response would be to suggest that it's very unlikely due to the excessive cap hit. Then again, I hardly claim to have a crystal ball, so anything's always possible, especially as it pertains to Bill Belichick and doing what's best for the team.

I think the 2nd year was pretty much put in my Revis' camp to make sure that he could not be franchised, so they came up with a very high option to deter the Patriots front office in the hopes that he could see a longer term pact one way or the other.

No way at 25M. But 20M maybe, just maybe. But its moot if you are correct at the 25m hit. But hypothetically I was thinking that if NE considers it a two year deal from the get go, averages (and prepares for) it over two years mentally and financially, they would be more than happy getting The Island for that total amount for 2 years. Especially considering they hold the option to not pull the trigger (if things didn't work out in year 1), albeit at a frighteningly steep 20M one year deal. To me, a two year deal at the more (ahem) manageable 16M/per seems right in line with his projected value, if you don't consider the negative backheavy aspect of the whole thing. Or in other words, a 2yr deal, at 12M and 20M, a sure underpay coupled with an overpay, over 2yrs, is still for a total of 32M. Also, you can back out of year 2 if Revis isn't Revis. I do the deal and don't look back. It seems to me a small price to lock up the best CB of our generation (and perhaps ever) for a full season, and also -if NE so chooses- a second season of his near prime playing football. We've seen first hand over the last sever.. the last hundred years, how hard it is to acquire or develop these players. I'm think BB and NE would happily lock the best for 2 years if they could.

I just don't see the second year option being picked up. That is a ton of money to throw at a corner, I don't care how much the cap has gone up(will go up).

The 25 million dollar cap hit for 2015 is correct, and while I certainly understand your point, I can't imagine Belichick being willing to pay a 25 million dollar cap hit under many (if any) circumstances.

Like I said, I believe that Revis' camp threw it in there simply to deter the Pats from franchising him in the 2nd year, so that they could either 1) work out a longer term deal with more guaranteed money or 2) allow him to go somewhere else and do the same.

Hopefully we can get something done, but I have a strange feeling that it's going to be a lot more difficult than many here expect by going far into February/early March. If we can prevent him from reaching free agency, it won't matter in the long run, so let's hope that's able to be done. Just my opinion on the matter.

I did not know of the extra 5M cap hit. I'll look it up after this. I've only ever heard $20M. My logic was that at that measely $20M, there would be another viable option on the table. #3, The Pats could just sign him to the contract for $20M that season, and make him the highest paid corner in the league as he would deserve if it got to that point (instead of an average of the top 5). This is why they probably added the extra $5M in the language to prevent this from happening. Unless... NE was willing to pay him $25M to do the same... :) I joke, as obviously 25M is too high, but it's not too far off to not think about it - I guess that's what I'm getting at. And, especially if you consider it a two year deal, and the factors we've already discussed. Either way, cheers, here's to having a healthy Revis on NE for a long time! :D

Yeah, the cash is 20 million, but the actual salary cap hit is 25 million.

In comparison for this season, the cash is 12 million, but the salary cap hit is actually only 7 million.

It's just the way they structured the deal, so judging by those 2 factors we can assume the following:

1) The Patriots get away with only having a 7m dollar cap hit for this season with one of the best CBs in the game. They then have the option of reaching a longer term deal in the offseason, as long as both parties are open and willing to that. Not too shabby of a trial version with a 10m dollar bonus, and a 12 m dollar total worth, but only a 7m dollar cap hit.

2) Revis protects himself from any possibility of being franchised next year by throwing in a 2nd yr on the deal that both parties know won't be played out under any circumstances. This also coincides with the feeling that they'll be exploring the possibility of extending him OR one or both of the parties will decide that they'd rather step aside, where he'd then be a free agent on the open market.

The only thing that I am concerned about is the fact that the CB market is rising, and looks to be continuing to rise once Patrick Peterson signs his extension. The recent deals of Haden, Sherman, Talib, DRC, and Revis have really raised the bar on the worth of the CB market--especially after such a down year last season. I'd also be concerned with the fact that both parties are somewhat stubborn and kind of set in their ways, but as many have pointed out--Belichick may see things a bit differently, especially if/when Revis proves his worth for 2014. I think he'll be looking for something in the 14m+ range though, myself, so only time will tell what happens.

IMO, the Pats would be willing to pay top of the market prices for a player of Revis' talent and competitiveness and production. However, they are only going to pay top dollar money to a player who is the Tom Brady on defense in terms of leadership. I think that's what the Patriots wanted to see before talking long term at top dollar. Revis, from his standpoint, wanted to see if he enjoyed the Patriots approach, i.e. Belichick's coaching.

I suspect that the evaluation, from both sides, is a resounding "Yes" at this point. Revis taking four of the other DBs to Arizona for two weeks before camp was exactly the kind of thing that Pats would want to see.

The extra 5m cap hit is irrelevant to the discussion of if the second year option will be picked up.

That cap hit applies whether or not we pick up his option.

So the question in 8 months is simply, is Revis worth 1 year at 20m.

The answer is no.

So either there'll be a restructure -- and maybe he signs a multi year deal for 12-15m/year (and that extra 5m cap hit gets spaced out), or he leaves (and we have 5m cap deadweight)

Bill isn't going to overpay a guy by 4m on logic like 'we have cap space so might as well overpay some players' and 'if I look at the average over 2 years, its only 16m' -- both those viewpoints lead to terrible teams, and bill has shown he doesn't overpay except in rare cases where he temporarily lost his sense (Arrington, amendola over welker, i'd put paying up for mankins in there as well)

I think it is a great contract, let him prove to the league that he can still play, he says he is one of the best...prove it again...and if we get his best lets be honest, we have a much better chance of advancing past that AFCCG..

Sign him long term, 12 mil a year with a no hold out clause
