2014 Mock Draft ~ Final Exams!!

I’m going to tag along with Captain Stone’s brilliant trade projections. He is right about one thing—Trai Turner is the real deal at OG—but he is wrong about Jace Amaro being the only move TE. We could have beaten Ted Thompson to UFA Colt Lyerla, but we didn’t want another potential criminal. I understand. But when we lose to the Packers in the SB as Colt makes the game-winning grab, others will be less so inclined.

Here goes, fellas:

Trading down twice per Cap’n Stone, whose logical appears unimpeachable:

I go with TE Jace Amaro at #44. It’s STILL our weakest position, even if Tavon Wilson and his stone cold hips starts at strong safety. We didn't go out and be proactive and the good players were taken earlier than many had predicted. We should have gone out and made it work.

At 62 it’s the American Samoan all the way, Scott Crichton, a relentless pass rusher with enough physical tools to get the job done. A cross between Vrabel and Ninkovich. He's coming out to pay for his dad's medical bills. Awesome guy!

At 105 I’d differ from CP and go interior offensive line help, which is a definite need. I’m not that high on Bryan Stork, but am more so by Russell Bodine at center, whom Cincinnati picked at 111. They had a good draft, folks.

At 108 Aaron Colvin, CB, out of Oklahoma. Isn’t he like a first round talent with an injury, which puts him play to be a player for us? An NFL starter, gentlemen, we let out of our grasp.

At 130 I’d go for OG in David Yankey from Stanford, who was The Steal of the Draft, being picked #145. I can’t understand why.

At 140 I’d stick with who we took, another Cardinal on the offensive line in Cameron Fleming, who was personally scouted by Dante and can fill in for an injured Seabass, which seems to happen with annual regularity.

At 153 I go defense or running back. Oops, not supposed to say “or.” Or.. I’m expelled. Nope, I’m wrong. Alabama QB A. J. McCarron, who looks to be an ideal third string player for us to slowly develop. We know he has adequate arm strength and doesn’t make unforced errors.

At 179 I love the choice of Antone “Don’t Call Me Antoine” Exum., FS, CB, or whatever. He’ll need a redshirt year. Think of the nicknames we could come up with him? He is very versatile and will play for the Vikes. He was a good pickup.

At 198 we need another run-stopping plugger at the D line, someone like Beau Allen, the wide body from Wisconsin, to spell the old veterans who were both injured last season.

At 206 I’m in agreement with Captain Stone. Jeff Janis from lil Saginew State whatever. Have you seen his physicality? His size and speed? I think he makes almost any team that drafts him. He’s very intriguing. Kudos to Ted Thompson, one of the best NFL GM’s, for drafting him. He has far more upside than the Smurf WR we took in the seventh, Gallon something.

At 244 Zach Moore. Like Janis, his physical tools deserve a look-see above and beyond the free agency route, which I had hoped we’d do with Colt Lyerla.

I’m hoping DT Armond Armstead, the player who’s disruptive at defensive line and missed all last year with an infection, comes back and plays well for us, making not having Domique Easley more palatable.

Right now this team is being held hostage by the nonentities manning the tight end position.

A belated "Attaboy" for a Job Well Done, Sir.

I'm afraid that my quasi-serious "rules", meant really only as "guidelines" came across a bit more serious than intended, to many.

Blame the nuance-bleeding, tone-blanching InterNet, Gentlemen, not me!! :D

Pouncing on guys for "or's"? Well, it was intended to be theatrical!! I was pointing out that if you want to be able, Years from now, to say "Hey, I mocked that guy to us back in 2014!!" then you can't expect the rest of us to take you seriously if you said that you'd draft that guy OR some other guy!!

That's all. And it's just my opinion, no more.

We will of course collectively decide how much weight to ascribe to "ORs". :)

Addendum!! :D

This can be retroactively attached to my PreDraft/During Draft/Immediately Post Draft Moves or added any time between then and today. It doesn't matter, because it's acting upon Reports that've been on the Wires since before the Draft, and which haven't been affected, since, with the possible exception of the Trade Value of this Addendum possibly fading since then...

2015 5th Rounder to the Eagles for Dragon Brandon Graham!! Gotta go!! More Bloviation later!! :D

***Ensuing Bloviation***

The Eagles have reportedly, and for not one OffSeason but two, been looking to dump both Vince Curry ~ a SuperBinky of mine in recent Years ~ and Brandon Graham, a 1st Rounder in 2010.

Of course, the fundamental Reason for these Moves is that the Eagles have switched from the "43" to the "34", and neither Curry nor Graham are considered good fits for Conversion from "43" End to "34" Flanker ~ "OutSide LineBacker", to you Earthlings.

And that is very well.

The part that I don't get, in my admitted Ignorance ~ I'm not being cute or funny, here: all we Fans must accept and be repeatedly reminded of the Reality of how little we are Privy to ~ is the apparent lack of Market Value of either Curry or Graham.

Seems to me that both of these guys bring considerable FirePower to the Field of Battle, in a World starved for FirePower.

Yet my Perception ~ and it is just my Perception, based on Rumors & Whispers ~ is that there is very little Market for either of these guys.

If so ~ and "if so" is what we have to go on ~ then I would pounce...on both of them.

You Can Never Have Too Much FirePower!!!

At this point brother Grid it appears that Bill's going to see what he has in Buchanan, Jake the Fake,
Zach Moore & the Fresh Prince at DE before deciding to make any inquiries.
One trade however I would love to see him make with Philly is for TE/FB James Casey. He's not a great POA blocker, but he's decent enough there, has excellent hands, is smart & versatile. His only
drawback is his salary hit, so I'm afraid that it's not going to happen.

I agree that the trade is impractical, but I love your choice, Brother!!

Casey would be a phenomenal Weapon in any Offense!!

I would also snatch up CB/CF Terrell Thomas as Camp Competition...and perhaps a bit more.

I've had my eye on this guy for quite a while, and I believe that he is poised for a potentially monstrous ComeBack Campaign, given the Snaps...which he is almost certainly not going to receive!!

Terrell Thomas is the Quintessential Fanatical Yankee Bargain Basement Beast Buy, and I would ABSOLUTELY outbid the SeaHawks for'is Services!!

I wish Bill felt the same way that we do regarding Terrell Thomas…and that Seattle obviously does too.
He would've been a luxury signing, no doubt, but it's not like Bill's saving his money to sign an athletic
Swing Tackle, a Move TE (Dustin Keller), a dependable FB/RB (Brian Leonard) or a sure-handed, physical WR.

#01 ~ Jaguars just cut Flank Defender Dekoda Watson ~ Florida State, 2010 ~ loose.

I see'm as a 3 Way Player ~ a guy who can Make Money as a Rusher, as a Run Defender, and in Coverage ~ though you don't want'm Setting the Edge, mind you!!

I'd definitely snatch that guy up immediately.

#02 ~ I'd also snatch up Offensive Tackle Derek Sherrod ~ Mississippi State, 2011 ~ who the Packers recently cut. He's almost certainly Damaged Goods, but if it'd be worth it to snatch'm just to float'm for a week ~ or whatever the rules require ~ and then stash'm on Injured Reserve and give our Doctors the OffSeason to see if a little more Time & Patience just might be what he needs.

A Long Shot, but a cheap Ticket to the Lottery. Back in 2011, I rated this guy OverRated, due my belief in a lack of Core Power and questionable Core Agility ~ Fluidity ~ which have quite possibly been elemental to his severe Health issues since then. Even so, there was some genuine Agility there.

Really interesting about Watson considering the team looked at him pre-season. I imagine that Casillas probably makes signing Watson redundant. I'd still be interested though, as a linebacker, Watson ran a 4.4 at his pro day and that's some speed to add on defense. Interesting name to keep in the back pocket for the off season though.

Thanks for your response, Bro. We'll have to agree to disagree: I respect your Philosophical approach and your employment of the term, which I've seen many times over the last few years, but the word "redundant" isn't in my FootBall Vocabulary. I believe that a lack of Depth of Talent ~ of what you might call being "redundant" ~ is in fact precisely what's cost us multiple Super Bowls over the last several Years.

Watson is of course not the best example of this ~ he's a peripheral Talent.

Better examples might be the likes of Brandon Graham & Vince Curry, both'f whom I'd've pilfered from the Eagles, who were reportedly if inexplicably shopping them last OffSeason, despite the presence of Chandler Jones & Rob Ninkovich ~ and Aaron Lynch, for that matter.

But, again: That's a philosophical difference, one where I believe everyone here would agree with you.

Viva Le Difference. ;)

I didn't know that Sherrod had been waived. At the least, I would sign him to a futures contract.
We have an absolute need for a more athletic Swing Tackle than Marcus Cannon.
I wonder what the cap ramifications are if he were to be signed to a vet minimum, non-guaranteed
contract then immediately placed on IR.

Sorry Grid but those rootin-tootin' Cowboys snapped him up. Dagnamit!

Someone has to say it. Jimmy G to the Rams for their 1st rounder. Mariota and Winston are gone and they need a qb like Prince Aladdin for their pending move to LA.

I suspect a Jeff Fisher trade go Johnny Manziel would be more likely. I stated a mock draft and had the Rams drafting Todd Gurley and building an offence around him and Tre Mason. I could see them signing Jake Locker and trying to replicate the Seahawks offense.

And i simply can't see Browns tradeing and help Rams. Remmeber Rams picked Redskins > Browns in the Rg3 trade...... ( Lucky for Browns but still )

I don't want Jimmy G going anywhere. Regardless of price. I legitimately think he's our future after Brady. And I never felt that way about Mallett. Good QBs are too hard to find. Potential franchise QBs (and I think Garropolo is one) are close to impossible to find.

Retroactive Addition to the 2014 Campaign!!

I'm adding this here because I figure that any move I make applicable to the 2014 Campaign clearly should.

I missed this earlier ~ hey, I was working 75 Hours a week through Halloween, baby!! ~ but it appears that Stephen Hill, that raw but incredibly talented Split End from the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets who the Jets cut in August two Years after burning a 2nd Rouder on'm...got picked up way back on September 2nd and added to the Panthers's Practice Squad.

If I'm running thing, we have the greatest Wide Out Coaches in all the Land working for us at irresistibly bloated salaries!!

If I'm running things, we pounce on Stephen Hill on September 1st, and we send'm to our Practice Squad!!

If I'm running things, we train the lad!!

Well, it being this Morning the Dawn of Free Agency and a Monday, I thought that this would be a perfect time to drag out last Year's Inaugural BackDrafts & Final Exams and see how we're doing!! :D

I'll be looking at everyone's BackDrafts and commenting, because everyone who submitted a BackDraft deserves a response ~ regardless of how their BackDraft's doing!! :D ~ but please do not anyone interpret that as my perceiving myself as the Lone Judge on such matters ~ even I'm not that Arrogant!! :D We are all Judges, and I hope y'all will add your own Opinions, if you like, either now, or in the Years to come...

First up!! Brother Missile!!

Sorry for my early reply. Was off to work and didn't really read it all the way through. Here it goes

29.29. Dominique Easley. Loved the pick by Bill. Courageous boom pick with a little concern over the knees. I'm glad he is still young, they should heal up good as new with all that natural testosterone and the best surgeon in he business.

62.75 Tre Mason. Possibly the best RB in this draft and had some great upside that have pushed Ridley to the brink. May have had impact year 1.

105.171 Jordan Tripp. Thought another LB was a need with Spikes and Fletcher departing. Think he may have had the tools to be a good coverage LB. Really pissed about this one. Could of also went Kevin Pierre-Louis at 130 or Telvin Smith at 140 for crying out loud they could of had any 3 of them. Big time downer for me again.

130.173 Wesley Johnson. Bill must not have been overly impressed. I'm more than fine with the Stork pick though. .

140.158 Caraun Reid. Nice DT in the middle for some depth.

179. 182 Antone Exum. Could of been a cornerback steal. Injuries most definitely impacted his draft status.

206.236 Jeff Janis. Small school Wr who had all the measureables.

244.247 Jonathan Dowling. Another safety that slipped through the cracks.

TEs and guards as undrafted free agents.

This would of been a draft that appealed to the masses and was doable based on the way the board fell. Thanks for all the work from the fellow posters in the draft forums. Most of this came from their hard work and they can sell their prospects very well to the average draftnick like myself. In a deep draft like this one you would hope for better. Personally it wasn't a very satisfying day because many of the names drafted were obscure and unrecognizable to most. However we all know it's not about the name, it is what do you bring to the team and can you play football? BB has trashed many a draft board in the past but has somehow came out ****ting gold with some of his work. To be honest if I had to critique this draft I wouldn't know where to begin. I'm fine with the QB pick but am also a little bothered by it. I understand it though.I like how they addressed the oline but baffled by the names. I don't know, without being a fly on the wall and really knowing how they scout and select players it's a mute point. They've done a great job in the past with occasional hiccups here and there but so have a lot of teams.

Saved to the archives to be opened up next year.

I grade my final draft redo a A+
I grade BB and his draft a C

Heh!! The funny thing? I like almost every Pick in this Mock, and there're 3 Full Throttle Binkies of mine, plus several guys I like...And the only one who's made an Impact is the one Pick I didn't like!!
jester.gif

Time will tell how it goes, but in my Opinion, there's no Scrabble, here: Every Prospect you rolled with has genuine Talent and Potential. Anyone who's done their HomeWork knows that we shouldn't've expected anything out'f Easley last Year, and most of your guys are raw and will need Time, is all.

Meanwhile, Tre Mason would've made an enormous Impact for us, this Year. Well Played, Sir.

This is what I would done if I were picking.

29-Dominique Easley, DL
62-Marcus Martin, OL
105-Andre Williams, RB
130-Dakota Dozier, OL
140-Jordan Tripp, LB
179-Robert Herron, WR
198-Garrett Scott, OL
206-Terrence Fede, DL
244-Jonathan Dowling, DB

My favorite Pick of your Mock is of course Marcus Martin at #62. Word is that he struggled, but almost all Rookies do, and especially on the Line. Bryan Stork played far better than I expected, but I'd still prefer Martin over'm...I love the Dozier Pick big time and the Tripp Pick, as well. Can't say that I care for the Williams Pick, but it's the only one I don't like. Too early to judge, overall, but a really nice Crew.
