Armstead announces his retirement

Based on what?? Lol he didn't play a down

Watch his college and CFL tapes, and basing it on when he was signed, you had respected guys like Adam Schefter saying it was the equivalent of getting another late first-early second round pick..

Sad news, but much better than having some tragedy occur on the field. Good luck, Armond!

he gave it his best. Best of look in his future life. Its a shame it didn't work out.

It's a real shame he had to retire but best of luck to him whatever he may do next.

I don't think BB has gushed that much about a departing player since Bruschi. Armstead must have made quite an impression with his effort and attitude.

if there is one thing BB is known for, its giving people who gave it their all good send offs. He's definitely not a guy to kick someone when they are down, but if you half ass it, or act a fool on your way out he will straight up haynesworth you.

His talent and his play in the CFL. Easley has never played a down in the NFL either. Most of us think he can be a player too.

6 sacks in the CFL.

excuse me while i don't get incredibly excited about that ;)

He is a talented player, he is tall, with long arms, and is explosive off the snap. He would have had a good career if he were healthy.

one season in the CFL after going undrafted by the NFL, and not picked up by any NFL teams.

That's a incredibly small amount of production, to say he would have had a "good career" in the nfl.

i get that he was a lot of guys binkie or whatever it is you call your personal favorite potential player, but Armond was always a written in pencil player.

He went undrafted because of a heart attack and pending litigation with USC. Kind of puts a damper on things.

He went to Canada and played very well and there were NFL teams lining up to sign him out of the CFL. It was a worthwhile gamble for the Patriots. Hearing about his character over the last year only makes me sadder that he won't realize his dream, and won't be there for us to enjoy.

Would he have been a great NFL player? Who knows, but the physical tools and the mental toughness were obviously there.

1) Most here understand that rookies who sit out the season rarely produced for the patriots. I have asked for ANY that have done so. I don't think that we have had any. So, little was expected from Armstead from most of us.

2) Some thought that Armstead was not a rookie because of his 6 sacks in the CFL. Personally, I don't think of CFL experience as being more than that of a senior player coming out of a major US college program. Both have a lot to learn as NFL rookie. I do acknowledge that the CFL can be an inexpensive source of players.

3) When Belichick signed Armstead, he took a shot as he does with so many signings. It just didn't work out. Belichick thought that Armstead had great upside; that is the optimism associated with lots of signings.

When I heard it was "clotting issues," I figured it was over.
Where did you hear/read this? Other than his initial heart-related thing, I haven't seen anything specific about what health issue he was battling since the Pats signed him. If there's more info out there I'd be curious to learn what, exactly, precipitated his retirement.

Sorry to hear it, hopefully he can catch on as a coach somewhere or find a place in the game if he wants one.

That was in this piece:

I had a bad feeling when I initially read that as well. It's too bad, seems like he had a lot of potential and it's obviously a disappointing way for things to end.

Ben Watson

sucks for armstead, hope he's ok...I hope I was not the only one who saw Bob "I haven't said anything insightful or relevant since the Whalers left Hartford" Neumeier intimate that drug use was the reason Armstead had his medical problems. Yes, Neumeier alluded to drugs during the 10:30 PM (I think) broadcast of whatever show on CSN last night.....and he admitted he had never heard of Armstead and Felger called him "Jesse Armstead"...f#cking morons...

It is, in fact, possible to form an opinion on a player's potential based on his college play. Not to mention his CFL play. Not sure lol is an appropriate reaction.

He went undrafted because he was coming off an freaking heart attack, not because he lacked talent.

Neumeier is such a ****ing waste of space. What on earth prompted his rehabilitation anyway? Plus, what's with the shirts open halfway to his navel?

Ben Watson
Didn't Watson play one game? Also, was he there for at least some practices? I agree that he was an injured rookie that was productive in his later years.

Of course, a team will surely give a lot of chances to their first rounders who don't play their rookie year; later picks, not so much.

Having done no research on it, but I believe that the Bumbler was injured on Opening Night at home
vs the Clots (the Van der Jaegermeister missed game-tying FG attempt). Broken leg/foot, maybe?
