Does this just make too much sense? (Andre Johnson wants out of Houston)

Mallet + Amendola + 4th rd pick

for

Andre Johnson + 5th rd pick

I know its not a fair trade but its better than nothing for both teams.

From Rotoworld:

After speaking to four NFL executives regarding potential trade compensation for Andre Johnson, the Sideline View's Lance Zierlein received answers ranging from a second- to fifth-round pick.

Although the Houston Chronicle's John McClain has been adamant the Texans will not trade Johnson, it's worth remembering McClain was adamant for most of the pre-draft process that the Texans would not select Jadeveon Clowney at No. 1 overall. (They did.) We suspect GM Rick Smith would seriously consider dealing Johnson if a win-now team offered a 2015 second-round pick. If the offer were a fourth- or fifth-rounder, the Texans should comfortably pass.

IMO. If Patriots give a 2015 2nd rounder only, I'd do it and I think Patriots must do it. It is like a 3rd rounder, as Patriots always end up in last 4 spots.

Well, now we have a poster on the Texans board claiming they have a "source" who works for the organization telling them AJ isn't being traded anywhere.

I have a source in the jets front office. He told me Tuesdays are Hawaiian shirt days and Thursdays are suck days

Problem is it won't cost a 2nd rounder. It'll cost a 2nd rounder plus roughly $10 million a year for the next 3 years. Granted it's not guaranteed but trading for him then cutting him kind of defeats the purpose.

You're obviously making this up. Any legit source in the Jets front office would know that Sundays are the suck days.

It depends on the second round pick, our 2014 second rounder is the next Tom Brady…o_O

Seriously, I would give up a conditional second round pick, and that is only if we get more than one year out of Johnson.

That's a pretty wide range. My opinion? If the Patriots are in fact interested in acquiring AJ (that's no sure thing given BB's track record), the issue will not be compensation to the Texans. It will be all about the contract. BB will never pay a WR $10 million per year.,

BB will never pay a WR $10 million per year.,

Randy Moss says hello. They paid him 9....if they view a player the best or one of the best at their position...he will pay. Has done it to tons of other players.

Gronk tried his best to get us a new weapon:

@RobGronkowski: Can't believe @KingJames didn't want to play football for the Pats. 1 2 punch at tight end! Maybe one day folks! #IblockYouReceive

Randy Moss says hello.

Not an unfair point, although when the Patriots acquired Moss, he accepted a renegotiated contact at $3 million for 2007. Moss was 30 at the time of the trade while AJ is 33.

His contract in 2008 was 3 years/$27 million/$15 million guaranteed, but that was after a record breaking season.

I like Andre Johnson a lot and he'd be a fine addition to the Patriots, but he's no Randy Moss. I might be wrong here, but no, I just don't see BB paying $10 million a year for AJ.

I don't see him paying for AJ either...but to say BB would never pay a WR 10 mill a year is false

The Salary Cap for 2008 was 116 million dollars.

It is 133 million dollars for 2014.

Not that big a deal, but it is a 12.8% increase in cap availability.

That's just my opinion (not sure how an opinion can be false). You may well be right but I'm skeptical that NE would deal for AJ without significant contractual concessions on his part. Time will tell ...

I just want to know why you think BB will never pay a WR 10 mill a year. A lot of here were saying they would never pay 12 mill for a CB. But they did

The 2008 Moss contract came close, but in the end, he didn't play up to that level. Over the years that BB has been here, he's been very reluctant to commit resources (draft picks or salary cap $$$) to the WR position.

They paid for Revis because he is a Hall of Fame talent. I'm not sure that AJ (at age 33) is that player. Who knows? Maybe BB would pay $10 million for Calvin Johnson ...

Would Johnson be worth a 2nd rounder for only one year? What I mean is, having Johnson this year and then making him a low priority after that. Kind of going all in with him this season? The chances a 2nd rounder surpasses one year of Johnson isn't extremely high is it? Would cutting Johnson to make room for re-signing Revis and McCourty be a possibility?

Assuming he doesn't take a pay cut and gets cut next offseason, the cost is a second round pick AND $10M in 2015 cap room. Right now they have over $6M in cap room that could be rolled over in 2015, so any restructured Andre Johnson contract that isn't a pay cut would use most of that plus leave dead money in 2015.

No, he wouldn't. BB values draft picks.

Understanding that we'd all love to see that big name WR signed here, I think the situation would have to line up very well to do so. While we're on the subject, I honestly do think it will happen at some point over the next 1-2-3 years, when the overall "value" is there and it's a guy who Belichick feels would definitely be worth it.

I think he'd be intrigued on some obvious level with Andre Johnson, but definitely not at the current asking price of a high round draft pick AND a major salary.

Eventually things will line up for us to bring in a very good option at the position of WR in my opinion, although it's hard to predict who and when.

So trading for Johnson would hurt the cap for next season even if he's cut. That's what I wasn't sure about.
