How can out-of-state fans watch the Pats in 2014?

Aereo was my preferred option last year after the NFL Gamepass NFL **** got a write up in freaking Forbes of all places and was promptly shut down.

This year I'm using slingbox but I've also toyed with the idea of using a hosting solution in a country that gets Gamepass for free and setting up a proxy on it.

Absent better options (I'm going to try to get either my dad or one of my cousins to set up a slingbox, but their internet sucks so I'm skeptical). Do you know if gamepass is going to be free in any countries this year? If so, I've found that using the Hola chrome extension is a little less hassle than using a VPN.

Awesome post Simple Jack's brother.

i had a few questions if you don't mind..

1.) It sounds like you have not tested this with an actual game yet and there could be some concerns over the quality if it was streamed through the VPN hence your test, correct?

2.) for the test what video streams were you watching?

2.) Are you planning on testing this for the preseason games and if so can you provide an update on that experience?

3.) Also, your cyber ghost link shows it works for 1 device, so I'm assuming this means you could sign up for gamepass and just stream it on an ipad right?

I got access to exactly three games that were available through Game Pass last year before the NFL got wise and the quality was excellent.

Oh, and it's awesome to see you posting. Talk about a blast from the past...

Correct, I have some concerns over the quality of the stream using the VPN (hence my suggestion to pay for a dedicated VPN service). I tested it out on the NFL Network channel (you can just watch whatever is on NFL Network (live) and the quality was mediocre using the VPN. HOWEVER, what I found was that as long as I launched the browser while connected to the VPN initially and opened the launch page while on the VPN, I could disconnect the VPN and still watch the stream without it kicking me off. This is resulted in BEAUTIFUL quality streams.

2.) for the test what video streams were you watching?
I just launched the "watch now" link, which took me to whatever was NFL Network at the time I believe.

2.) Are you planning on testing this for the preseason games and if so can you provide an update on that experience?
Absolutely. I plan on checking out some of my early fantasy targets, so I'll report back on the quality and any issues I encounter.

3.) Also, your cyber ghost link shows it works for 1 device, so I'm assuming this means you could sign up for gamepass and just stream it on an ipad right?
Yup, I would assume this to be the case. For iPad though, I actually used an App called Onavo Protect last year while I was in Europe to let me watch the NFL Sunday Ticket I had purchased through Madden 25 on my iPad. That worked like a charm (while I was actually in Europe and needed a US IP address), although I'm not sure if you are able to actually select the country's IP address. That being said, there SHOULD be plenty of VPN apps you can download specifically for the iPad, which would allow you a great range of flexibility, so don't freak if you can't install the CyberGhost for some reason on your iPad. :)

One thing to be wary of if you're VPN-ing to another country is that, at some point last year, the NFL must have noticed that a ton of people were exploiting the free Gamepass promotion in the Netherlands, so a bunch of popular VPN IPs got blacklisted. It would definitely suck to pay $100+ for a Gamepass subscription from a European country (Iceland is the cheapest that I've found so far at $99.99) and then have it get blacklisted a few weeks in.

True. Definitely one of the risks involved, BUT, I don't think the NFL has the technology, nor patience or money to try and block that many IP addresses. Not to mention, the address itself will often change quite frequently.

I just checked into an unlimited bandwidth app for the iPad called "VPN Unlimited". It's free for the first 10 days so you can try it out, and then they have offers of:
10 days-$1.99
1 month-$2.99
3 months-$9.99
1 year-27.99

I ran some speed tests, and at least on the VPN out of Germany, i got upwards of 12mbps down, which is pretty fast for a VPN! Not to mention, i'm only on a 2nd generation iPad, so I don't have the latest wifi technology! Just another option for those who need/want to do iPad only.

(Kontra good to hear from u)

Hearing that the nfl got wise last year makes me want to avoid the VPN. Maybe they only caught on b/c it was free there?

I wanted to mention I contacted Sunday ticket and on 7/16 they will be updating their pricing supposedly to include mobile devices? Right now it's 320 to get it on an iPad with Sunday ticket max

(There was confusion b/c they couldn't answer the damn question about only buying certain months)

"I'm sorry to hear of the confusion regarding our upcoming NFL SUNDAY TICKET offer for non-DIRECTV customers. While we do offer three different subscription options (mobile only, console only, or MAX, details at www.nflsundayticket.tv after 7/16), all are annual subscriptions only (for the entire 2014 season). We do not have plans to offer a Pay-per-day or monthly subscription at this time. We appreciate your understanding."

That would be my guess- last year it was free in the Netherlands, so basically everyone was going through a Dutch VPN. This year, assuming that you buy it, I'd think you would be able to just switch countries and/or VPN services as needed until you found one that worked.

I think direct tv caught on that their lost their ass last year with that madden 25 amz package for only an extra $40

Hopefully they at least see the huge market for finally selling Sunday ticket to people who don't want normal direct tv cable service

They did tell me I could sign up for nfl Sunday ticket or max on an old email but that guy could easily be a moron and wrong

It technically wasn't free. I was paying $1.99 per month for it.

That would be my guess as well. They probably just blocked almost all Dutch registered networks in the US. That being said, the amount of VPNs are almost infinite, so I'm not that worried. I say this as someone who has actually already purchased gamepass myself, so I've definitely got a stake in the game. lol

Any chance the nfl caught on and validated us customers by checking paypal funding or cc addresses?

Even if they think someone is using VPN from us based on the free service they can't shut everyone down guessing b/c they have a Netherlands ip.

But on the other hand they are arrogant enough to shut it down for a ton of ppl and then turn it back on when the honest ppl complain

I'm not even sure how'd they legally be able to get that info from the banks or paypal. Any financiers/lawyers here? Also, between the ex-pats abroad that still maintain US issued CC's and other folks abroad who have US-issued CC's, that would be a total clusterf*ck in my opinion.

Again though, just speculating. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable on that subject could chime in.

I thought it would show the billing address of the acct during payment of cc or paypal like any other vendor. ( just like buying something on eBay)

Not sure how they blocked it or could manage It this year if you used a VPN In a Random country this year

Looking forward to hearing how it works for you.

By the way the direct tv w/ madden last year worked amazing on iPad for $40. A few hiccups

The website on the other hand was a steaming pile of **** and a trainwreck of biblical proportions

I was told by both Directv and Apple (wanted to get two different perspectives, since you can never fully trust some of the answers you get) that the mobile Sunday Ticket package (MAX) is designed specifically for the smaller and more compact screen sizes; hence the much higher quality that you receive as opposed to watching it on the website via laptop/desktop.

I don't know if this is gospel truth or not, but I have found that by connecting my iPhone to the larger screen TV (through the HDMI port) via special connector sold at Apple stores, I'm able to keep the same kind of quality picture that I get from the smaller screen. I don't know if/how much this pertains to your experience or not, but I figured that I'd pass it along nonetheless. The quality that I receive on the iMac laptop sucks in comparison to the iPhone, although I don't believe I've ever tried it on the iPad.

I have always wondered how people in Canada watch the NFL (and I mean, like, at home on TV, not over a computer internet connection). Do they have the Sunday games like we here in the States do? Is there a Canadian equivalent of DirecTV Sunday Ticket?

Does anyone have any evidence that non-Direct TV subscribers will be able to use the web/mobile Sunday Ticket stuff this season? I used the Amazon/Madden special offer for the 'free' use of the broadcast streams for last year. I would love to do the same this season.

That's a great question SC. From what I understand, Directv wasn't all that hot on the idea last year since it's obviously their bread and butter to reel in new subscribers (it worked on me), so I wouldn't bank on it. That said, someone was mentioning something about either PS3 or Xbox 360 through the stream. I've heard both in this thread alone, so I'm not sure which is correct.

EDIT: I tried to dig around a bit with some "Sunday Ticket to go without Directv 2014" searches on the web, and I can't find a solid answer anywhere. Let me know if you find out.
