A quick question - I'm not sure how many of you watch 'soccer' regularly, but after the quality of the tournament so far and the slight 'success' of the USNMT, are any of you more tempted to go and watch a game or watch more of the European or South American stuff?

No. This was a good filler for the doldrums leading up to true football's training camp.

Landon Donavan says hello

No. ;)

Yeah, I would. Good stuff - - I enjoyed many of the non-U.S. games the past couple of weeks.

I watch some on TV when I can and my son and I are regulars at the NE Revolution games. Not the greatest but it's the best available local. My older kids played at high youth levels and now my younger son 14 plays for the Mass GPS club and trains there and at the RDS Revolution soccer academy. I coached youth soccer for around 15 years.

We love soccer ....

The sport absolutely won some fans after this. Just look at the TV deals American networks have with the EPL and the CL before this World Cup. Its only going to get bigger and stronger.

The US showed heart and fight til the end. Nothing to be ashamed of. The whole nation should be proud of these guys!

Another note: Besides Green coming in and scoring a goal with his first touch in a WC game, I was really empressed with Yedlin. I know he had a few defensive mistakes, but offensively I thought he was owning the right flank.

Lukaku really gave the US and more specifically Besler problems when he entered the game. That was probably the difference right their.

The US lacks a scoring punch....all defense. If it wasn't for the US Goalkeeper the score could have easily been 6 or 7 to 1......

Entertaining and as someone said earlier, a good filler until NFL football starts. I think I enjoyed watching the US women's soccer team play more than I did the US men's team.....

Not enough to make me an avid soccer fan tho....

I would watch again, but I would need a dog in the fight.

But I did watch 3 soccer matches ( missed Portugal).... something I've never done.

I caught very little of the game — it was on the TV at work and I was a bit busy. I saw it was in "extra time" (I asked if anyone knew how that worked and no one did.) Got me thinking: How could the "extra time" concept work in the NFL? Hmm. What about if when a team hasn't used all its timeouts at the end of a game (or half) if gets the option of extending playing time by two minutes per saved timeout; straight playing time, no timeouts (the saved timeout are forfeited for the extra time). Could be intriguing, though I haven't quite worked out what happens if both teams have a timeout left. Anyway... I think the concept of "extra time" in football could be intriguing.

Yeah, picking a team is a first a step. Once you start watching games, following transfer news, interacting with other fans and so on - you will become addicted in no time.

Also, keep in mind that club level is usually higher than NT level. So if you enjoyed this WC, you should definitely give Champions League and some of the top european leagues (EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga) a go.

You get drafted in the 1st round of the MLS and you make around 50K to 100K.

You have to go way down the draft round list to make less than that in the other 4 major sports.
There is no "way down" where players in the other 4 sports make that little money. As long as you make the team, you're doing better than $100k because the minimum salaries in all those sports is much higher than that.

No. Like I said before, as much as the World Cup has been a fun ride and getting good ratings, no one in America is going to care about the next time Barcelona plays Real Madrid.

EDIT: Also, as I said before, MLS is stupid for scheduling their championship when they do overlapping baseball playoffs and the NFL. If there were any brains in that organization, they'd have the championship in August, even if that meant starting the season in the dead of winter and even if it meant losing some players to scheduling conflicts.

Yedlin was fantastic when he was in. I didn't hear a fraction about him that I had heard about Bradley leading up to the World Cup. The advertisers really screwed up. Bradley was a fizzle.

Great effort from the US but it also showed how far they still have to go to become a world class program. Belgium dominated play and Howard kept them in it until the Extra Time and it just wasn't enough. Basically Belgium had 8-9 guys who were more skilled than the US players and they controlled the ball and just pounded away for the most part. That's not to say that the US didn't play their asses off because they did and they fought like hell to the end and had their chances, and if it goes to PK's it's 50/50 because both sides had great goalies. This US team played 4 teams in a row that were more skilled than them without one of their top 3 players, and they played all of them as hard as they could, they have absolutely no reason to hang their heads because they represented themselves and this country as well as they possibly could have. And while their are going to be big changes in personel between now and the next World Cup their is definitely reason for hope with players like Green and Yeldin coming up. They will be making a huge mistake if they get rid of Klinsmann, which is the sense I get from listening to Lalas, but Klinsmann understands the level and depth of talent it takes to be a top program, and when they can trot out a starting 10 (plus world class depth off the bench) that can control play and dictate the action the way teams like Germany, The Netherlands, France, italy, Portugal, Brazil, and Argentina usually can then they will be at that level and threatening final four with a real shot at winning it, and that's still probably 20 years off.

I love the speed and athleticism of Yedlin and Green, and I would love it if speed were the ultimate basis for the identity of this national team. I don't think you do it to the detriment of having a team with good size that is really tough but i think the US has the athletes who can provide both elements. Jozy Altidore, Jermaine Jones, Fabian Johnson, Deandre Yeldin, and Julius Green provide a really athletic nucleus going forward, and i have the feeling their are more like them in the feeder system and some will end up being revelations. They ares till going to have the more cerebral players like Bradley and big defenders like Gonzalez but to me the thing that could make the US team scary in future international events is the athleticism.

At this point I am just on a patfanken ramble. Hated to see them go out, have to get the soccer talk out of my system.

Tim Howard-Was that his last World Cup? Hopefully not, he may not be the starter at 39 but goalies last and he just played one of the greatest games any goalie has ever played, hard to call him done until it starts to show and that doesn't look like it's soon. Worst case scenario he gets beaten out and he's still available as a back-up. Unless he calls it quits?

Clint Dempsey-Not counting goalies the best player in US history, Donavan has the numbers but Dempsey scored the biggest goals on a consistent basis. I think he's done at the National Team level, he can still play at a high level and could help them the next year or two but he just played his last WC game.

Micheal Bradley-As much crap as we dish out at him he works like no one else and imo the last 30 minutes showed that Lalas was actually right and he is a far better player when playing from a defensive midfield position rather than an attacking one, when Altidore went down the moved both he and Dempsey up, and both suffered for it, and when they moved Wondolowski high and Bradley and Dempsey back their entire attack changed as Bradley consistently gave dangerous through balls to the attacking midfielders. More than anything else i think Klinsmann is going to take heat for that decision, they struggled with their possession and attack when he was playing higher up and they looked much more effective and dangerous when he was playing from the defensive midfield position he normally plays. I loved the creativity at the end of that game and despite getting stuffed the set play with Dempsey off the line was a thing of beauty.

They have some pieces but they have a ways to go, hopefully they will find some of the answers in the next year or two, that way they can contribute early and build for the next World Cup.

What a way to go out. I'm proud of the effort they put in for the final 15, but it was too little too late. And Howard? He was ridiculous...amazing! It's too bad it was in a losing effort.

Deutschland vor!! But I'm not totally convinced this is the club to take it all the way.

I'm a Borussia Dortmund supporter and the only time I can usually ever see them (without going online) is if they make the Champions League. I miss watching the Bundesliga; it's a wild league.

As for the MLS, I'm still not totally sold on watching it, but perhaps I'll give a go at some point.

Yep, I really thought they played their asses off for the entire game, even though they were getting them handed to them for a big chunk of it, almost like Rocky movie.

The MLS is going to be central to the debate that's coming in american soccer, and it could either screw the US National Team for a long time or the powers that be could decide to continue supporting the great young stars playing aboard, which for the most part is where the money is going to drive them anyways. Klinsmann wants them playing in the best leagues on earth, the MLS and high ranking officials in US Soccer want them here, and that could end up costing Klinsmann his job, although that would be a huge mistake and travesty imo. Lalas is right in the middle of this and I thought it colored his comments about Klinsmann and their style of play during this World Cup Personally i want julian green playing for Bayern Munich and not the Chicago Fire, and I want Altidore and Bradley and the rest of their best players playing for the best teams in the best tournaments, like the UEAFA Champions League. I still want the MLS to build and continue to improave but if they try to make the National team an MLS All Star team they will fail spectacularly.

Bradley had a tough tournament but the more i look at it the more i think that was situational than his fault, he worked his ass off playing much higher than he generally plays and i think it really affected his ability to influence play with the ball. They simply do not have anyone else they can put in that position once Altidore went down and Dempsey had to go to lone striker. Klinsmann could have changed their shape but it would have left them open to counters from teams who were all more skilled, and even then they were under the gun for most of the tournament. The Bradley i have watched over his career was the one we saw in the last 45 minutes of that match, despite the fact that he had to have been exhausted from running his ass off for the entire game. the US team has its deficits and one of them is the offensive midfield er role to play in front of Bradley, I have no idea who is going to fill that role going forward, it will be interesting to see, because at least imo after this tournament Micheal Bradley should stay in the role of the defensive midfielder who holds and distributes, and not an attacking offensive midfielder. Bradley is really one of the best players this country has ever produced, and he really represents it well with his work ethic and play, and hopefully this tournament won't sully that too much.
