Source: Dobson doubtful for minicamp

The Patriots were waiting to see if they could avoid surgery by waiting a little while and allowing his foot to heal without it first.

He had surgery in early March, so I don't really see what it hurt by waiting 3-4 more weeks than when he'd have gotten it originally, which obviously wouldn't have been any sooner than early February since we were in the AFCCG.

I don't understand how anyone would consider waiting an additional 3-4 weeks as "botching things?" Why force one of your players to go under the knife if the problem may heal on its own? There's no way to predict how these situations are going to end up, especially when it was addressed only 5 weeks or so after the season ended.

One could have argued that it was "botched," had the team waited until May/June to have him go under the knife, but who could have predicted that his healing time would be a little longer than anticipated in the early off-season?

This is apparently a difficult concept to grasp.

This is shocking news! This guy was one of the pillars of this team last year and puts the T in Toughness. No one fought through injuries and made the tough catches like this guy......oh wait a sec.....I thought this was about Edelman......my bad....

Dobsons made o' glass......

Good God, it's a freaking foot. They've had like six months to get it right.

Yep, any player who gets injured is made of glass

SOme fans are brutal. These are the types that after the first loss say it's over...won't win a thing ect ect

What's really unfortunate is that he's had no off-season training. We hear about the 2nd year jump and I personally don't think it happens in training camp but rather the time leading up to TC.
Although Edelman had something similar last year, he's already been in the system for a few years.

Hopefully, he's healthy and ready to go but I wouldn't be surprised to see Thompkins as the starter in his place when the season starts. I also hope I'm wrong but my expectations are tempered.

I'm pretty concerned here. We need him more than any other receiver to step up this year. He's our real deep threat, and missing minicamp will not do anything to help him make a year 2 jump.

Its not even training camp and you're pretty concerned? If he misses some camp then yes be worried..but mid june? No

Missing minicamp? Its 3 days. Chill.

From the Herald today:

That has lasted a week longer than expected because Dobson still needs to regain full strength in his foot to prevent re-injury, according to a source. The Patriots didn’t feel the need to rush him onto the field during minicamp this week, as the goal for his return has shifted to training camp. The team was prepared in March for this scenario.

So it looks like Dobson will be fine and was held out more to not risk injury in minicamp.

I'm actually concerned about this. I feel like it's a big story going under the radar. I agree that holding him out is the right way to go. With all the injuries we've had over the years it just makes sense. He's missing valuable time though. And we really need his size playing wr. I really don't want to be depending on slot wr's the majority of the time again.

The thing that really bothers me is he started to understand the game more when he was hurt. The first half of the season he looked lost at the los. As he became more comfortable, the game started to slow down or maybe his mind was slowing down and he was processing the information in front of him faster. As the season went on he began to recognize what's in front of him and how to adjust to it. That's what bothers me. Is that he looked like he was finally getting it.
I would not be too concerned with it personally; the things that are important to Dobson developing and making a second year leap are –

- Understanding the offense and the playbook
- Understanding NFL defenses and coverage techniques
- Working on his technique and route running
- Working on adding strength and muscle to his frame

Recovering from a stress fracture really should not prohibit him from doing any of these things, except maybe the route running, but even that he can do in a light jog.

Why rush him on the field? We all know how this ends up....

He needs every rep he can get. He was supposed to be ready for minicamps initially and now he's not. I just hope this doesn't keep getting pushed back because the whole thing seems to have been somewhat mismanaged already.

He was at 2-3 months healing time..he is like a week behind that 3 month period...We already know the problem is he still doesn't have 100% strength in the foot.

Foot injuries are problematic. Any setback, or delay, with a foot recovery is cause for concern. Some people will prematurely take that concern straight to panic levels, of course, but blithely dismissing a deviation from expected foot recovery is not the best way to go.

Really, it's just something to watch at this point. I would have loved for him to have been out there for MC but the **** won't really hit the fan until or if he misses any time in TC. The season is still a long way off and Dobson has plenty of time to get his work in still.

I mean listen, we’re sitting here talking about minicamp, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we’re talking about minicamp. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it’s my last but we’re talking about minicamp man. How silly is that?

Always nice to get an Allen Iverson reference at 8:47 am on a Friday. :)

Very probable he starts out on pup. Misses camp entirely. Need johnson for sure.

But according to the Herald, this is not a deviation from Dobson's expect recovery time. The Herald said that a scenario where Dobson missed minicamp was already expected could happen at the time of Dobson's surgery. So this is not a concern at this point. If he misses time during minicamp, then it is a deviation from the expected recovery.
