Greg Bedard has a great profile piece on new Brown's head coach Mike Pettine. Bedard talked with him mostly on schemes and has some interesting notes throughout. Most notably from a Pats perspective is this:

Mike Pettine, Cleveland Browns coach, ready to unleash complex defense | MMQB

The initial playbook itself is actually quite thin, and that’s by design. “I don’t put a lot of graduate-level information in it,” Pettine says. “We know in places like New England, it’s only a matter of time that they somehow mysteriously end up with our playbook.”

Pettine told a story of how, at Wes Welker’s wedding, Tom Brady bragged a little bit to Jets outside linebackers coach Mike Smith, who was Welker’s college roommate, that the Patriots may or may not have had possession of a couple Jets defensive playbooks.

“It didn’t shock me because Rex would give them out like candy anyway,” Pettine says. “He gave one out to [Alabama coach Nick] Saban and I was like, ‘Don’t you know Saban and Bill [Belichick] are pretty good friends? I have a feeling it’s going to end up in New England.’”

Classic Rex right there. Can't wait for the 'playbook-gate' outrage from the NY media to commence

There are some other notes on how the Browns tempo on offense will be similar to New England's and other interesting scheme, team building, and other notes for the football junkies.

So right off the bat we know Pettine is a moron. Its no wonder half of Clevelands front office and management jumped ship because the decisions of who to hire are shaky at best. How can Pettine even fault the Patriots if Rex Ryan stupidly was handing out his playbook??? Who even knows if this "story" is remotely true.

Whether it's true or not Is irrelevant. It feeds into the cheater theory and will grow exponentially. And before someone here accuses me of extending the life of that theory via this post, Pettine and Bedard already took care of that one.

Of course it matters if its relevent, people have not dropped the cheater thing for quite some time. Other coaches have come out and stated it was never an issue and it was always blown way out of proportion (Bill Cowher). If people still feel the need to go their then thats their problem.

Come on now. Surely BB would anticipate a Jets playbook that ends up in the hands of Saban would be a fake. Because Rex can't be that stupid... right??

You do realize that he is absurdly arrogant and thats not a disrespectful comment its just who he is and how his family has been. They're all loud and boisterous.

NFL.com already has a piece on it.

Very irresponsible comments by Pettine.

I'm sure within the next 30 minutes, we'll see the headline "Patriots have Browns playbook" on PFT with the writer being the ambulance chaser Mike Florio.
And they'll conveniently circumvent the real story here: that even Rex's own "right-hand man" thinks the guy is a knucklehead.

The Kraft's should send thank you cards out to all of those who run with this story. Talk about firing up Belichick and this team going into next season? It's a shame they don't play the Browns but to do so you have to truly suck when you aren't playing the North , so I guess they will have to leave that to the Bills.

Um so? You can review tape to get most of what that book would hold. Rex is an idiot to hand out the playbook to anyone and not keep an eye on it.

Hey Look it's your problem if your head coach is dumb enough to hand a copy of his playbook to anyone outside of the organization. If he gives it to the best friend of the head coach of a team that you haven't finished ahead of in the standings since 2000, then your coach is an idiot!

For once, the comments on this BS speculative story are eviscerating it. Fun to read.

"So let me get this straight.

Pettine thinks that the Patriots may or may not have the Jets playbook because Brady may or may not have bragged to Mike Smith that the Patriots may or may not have had a copy of the Jets playbook and he thinks Saban may or may not have shown it to Belichick.

Okay. Yeah. I'm convinced."

They forgot to add this at the end:

...sources (Matt Walsh) told The Boston Herald (Ron Borges) on Wednesday.

I hope this story doesn't interrupt ESPN's 24/7 "Summer of Lebron" coverage. It was nice of ESPN to give the Spurs 12 hours of headlines after winning the championship before "The Decision 2.0" hit overdrive.
