On Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Yates had been cut, on the same day coach Bill O’Brien named Ryan Fitzpatrick the starter. Now, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the Texans have actually traded Yates to the Falcons.

In return, Houston gets linebacker Akeem Dent. A third-round pick in 2011, Dent appeared in 15 games with seven starts last season. In 2012, he appeared in 16 regular-season games, with 13 starts.

ATL must have really wanted Yates, seeing as how they were pretty high up in the waiver wire priority. Either that, or it may have been a case of 2 players who were likely to be cut anyway, which may be closer to the truth.

Either way, I'm all for more player trades myself.

So when the Falcons realize Yates is ungood. . . . :D

Trades of fringe players do occasionally happen -- e.g. Bethel Johnson & Jonathan Sullivan -- and I'm surprised it's not more common. Approaching a cutdown day, two teams low on the waiver priority list could exchange a list of players they're prepared to cut loose and each pick one of the other's.

Or maybe that already do that, but it's rare for two teams to both want each other's castoffs?

I think part of it too is that with lower tier fringe players the salary cap implications are usually pretty minimal. It's harder to pull off a big name for big name trade because the money part becomes much more complicated. It's usually cleaner to go player-for-pick because then only one team has to be okay with the potential cap penalties.

Trades of player don't happen except when its these types of trades where it is two guys who look like they will be cut but might be of use to another teams. So that's what maybe 2 player trades every year?

I thought that Demps/Blount had already proved the point. :)

They dont need him to be good they just need him to be a backup with some playing time experience. No one is passing Matty Ryan

There's gotta be a way in which the league can better facilitate trades involving higher cap hit/dead money players, perhaps by having those totals cancel each other out and allowing only the difference
to be carried forward.

Wouldnt the NFLPA have to agree on this as well if possible?

Could be, but as long as their guys are still paid what they're owed I don't think that the PA would object; in fact they might even encourage such transactions if it places players in better situations.

I was under the impression that Dent was alright. I must have been wrong if they got Yates for him.

oh right...Mallett AND Amendola for Andre Johnson....of course. Let the genius party commence!

Why not, as long as the cap implications are minimal?

a bad backup QB for a average backup LB

Baldwin for Aj Jenkins 2 struggling receivers

He's okay against the run but can't cover a lick. He was benched in favor of an undrafted free agent halfway through last season. Given the depth chart behind Matt Ryan prior to this trade, trading a fringe LB for a proven backup QB is probably a very good move for the Falcons, even if Yates isn't all that great.
