Come on people. I know that "soccer" is not as well liked in the US as it is in... well, everywhere, but the absence of a World Cup Thread here is making me really uneasy.

So here it is, and what a great day to create it, the same day the US is up against Ghana in what I believed to be one of the most difficult and leveled group of all.

Is there any other soccer fan here? Have any predictions on today's games and/or the champion? Share it all here

I literally just started watching soccer when this world cup started and I must say, I am kinda hooked. I've literally watched every match and am looking forward to the U.S. playing tonight. Of the teams we've seen so far, I have been most impressed with The Dutch. They absolutely embarrassed Spain. I also enjoyed seeing Costa Rica beating Uruguay as they were heavy underdogs. Great stuff though. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Yeah, man, soccer is great!! Especially if it is a well played game, like all of the World Cup games have been untill now.

I am really excited for Portugal and Germany today, I'm hoping for a big game of Cristiano Ronaldo

I was watching a couple of the games at the gym and their is too much diving. I don't understand why they can't suspend/fine players for faking/diving. It really ruins the game for me.

That's the most common complaint that i hear. First, i think they "fake" injuries simply because the time doesn't stop. So when you have a advantage in the scoreboard, it makes some sense to keep the the ball away from danger, even if it means stopping an rival's possession.

Now to answer your question, why don't they suspend player that dive? Because it's literally impossible to know when a guy is diving purposefully or it's a reaction to a contact. In the same way, it's not possible to know how much pain the guy is in, so we don't know if it's a fake injury or not. So yeah, there's no way to avoid it. It is a fact, however, that if someone gets the reputation of being a "Diver", refs starts giving him a hard time, avoiding giving fouls for that person.

I watched five minutes of the Switzerland/Ecuador (I think) match yesterday. The end was great because the Swiss scored on the last play. The five minutes I watched before that made my eyelids heavy. How in God's name is this sport so damn popular? And holy ****, I thought flopping was bad in professional basketball but those guys are amateurs compared to soccer players.

Meh ... kickball ...

Kickball is more fun to watch, actually. Put a keg out there and make it Keg Kickball, and you have an hour of hilarity.

So for the U.S., obviously we need to beat Ghana but in the earlier game I guess we want Germany to win (by as large a margin as possible), with a tie the next best option and a Portugal win the least desired.

Any disenters on that ?

(thinking behind it is, as good as Portugal is, the U.S. has a better chance to tie or beat them than they do vs. Germany).

Any "sport" in which it's illegal to use the entire upper body for essentially everything, and which has employed penalty kicks to decide world championships because the game itself fails to produce a winner, is seriously flawed. Kickball is for small children on school playgrounds, not grown men.

First, what I quoted is simply untrue.

Second, how about those who don't like soccer, put the thread on Ignore and let those of us who have interest read it without every other post being "soccer sucks".

Thanks.

Great tournament so far. There's been a couple of poor games but overall its been great viewing. Agree about what a lot of people have said about diving. someday maybe it will be punished properly.

Maybe because I have an opinion on it? And I'll continue to view this thread and mock others who enjoy the sport pretty much at will. ;)

EDIT: Well, this post was a joke and I actually ignored the thread after that. But, look! I can dislike posts too. Hurr hurrrrrrrrr.

I pulling for the US to make it out of the group, but my avatar explains it all!!!!!!

We beat the Germans 2-1 today! !!!

World Cup soccer is the best. There's a lot of excitement for it in DC.

Can't wait to get out at 5:30 and head straight to the bar for USA Ghana.

Another thing I don't understand about soccer: Woodhead would be one of the 3 biggest players on the U.S team and probably the strongest. A question to soccer fans here from an ignorant gridiron football fan, does strength even matter in soccer? Because I see some players listed at 6' 150 lbs..

These players would get absolutely destroyed on a football field. Also, what would happen if you put Revis in soccer cleats covering Ronaldo? :D

I see so many highlights of a guy who gets hit in the arm and clutches his head. They need to get rid of the soft play. Also, a little bit of physical contact is good for you.

Not really, it isn't a collision sport like Football, Rugby League, Rugby Union etc so weight doesn't really mean much.
