The New Orleans Saints' prized free-agency acquisition, safety Jairus Byrd, is undergoing back surgery Thursday that the team is hoping will have him back at full speed in time for training camp.

Coach Sean Payton described the surgery as "something that didn't need to be done" but that all parties decided would be best for Byrd long-term after a disc issue had been nagging him for the past month -- and even before Byrd joined the Saints.

Payton said Byrd will probably miss all of OTAs and minicamp over the next month. But he expects him to "start up training camp with no problem."

"It's been asymptomatic, but it's something we wanted to do -- and he as well -- to alleviate or avoid any issues in the fall," Payton said.

Sucks for him. I hope their current thinking turns out to be correct.

Well I hope his surgery goes well for him. God bless him and his family.

Those back surgeries can be tricky, as we've seen plenty of times. I won't be remotely surprised to see Byrd missing the first couple/few weeks of TC.

Hey--at least we got him out of the division, right? ;)

Yeah but the Saints are going to be a very dangerous team in the NFC. I expect Cooks to come in and immediately synch with an offense that is already very scary. He gives Brees both a legit deep threat on top of a guy that can take a screen to the house. That defense was already improving by leaps and bounds last season and added Byrd back there to solidify the back end. They're going to make some noise in the NFC this year, assuming Graham signs the dotted line and assuming health.

Saints will be SB contenders this year. With or without Byrd.

With Byrd, though, that's a defense that can stifle a lot of offenses to go along with one of the more high powered offenses of the last decade. If NFC West beats the absolute **** out of one another this year, the Saints are my pick to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

That's a bold call, but hard to argue. It comes down to SEA, SF and NO to me. and maybe GB if they can stay healthy.

The only way, to me, the Saints can reach the Superbowl is if they get home field. Brees cannot win in SEA and any bad weather game really kills that offense, because they still don't have a run game and lost Sproles. Cooks and Graham is a dirty combo though and Stills is only gonna be better. if they get the dome, then have a legit SB shot

Well, to be fair, I'm qualifying that by saying it comes down to whether or not the NFC West absolutely kills one another. Otherwise, it's hard to see the Super Bowl participant in the NFC not coming out of that division, be it the 49ers or the Seahawks.

...

I would have liked for relevant news, but then would I be liking needing back surgery? Then you linked to E!SPN and that became irrelevant. :)
