(serious): Colin Kaepernick 6 years 110+ million, with 61 million guaranteed

Kaepernick has the sixth highest APY of any QB in the NFL. Only Rodgers, Ryan, Brees, Manning, and Flacco have a higher APY than him, three of those five players have won a MVP.

That's almost completely meaningless. For example, Brady's not there because of the way they reworked his deal. Kaepernick has been his team's clear QB1 for two seasons. In those two seasons, his team's gone to the NFCCG twice, and the SB once, and his coach chose him over a former #1 overall pick. He's young. He's not elite. His deal is commensurate with that.

Congrats to Colin. Hopefully the 49ers will find a way to fit Willis, bowman, crabtree etc under the cap.

This probably makes me a bad, bad person but I hope that they lose quality players as a result.
Then again, I'm a Pats Homer.

Kaepernick can play a big part in beating a defense but he cannot beat another QB, he doesn't play QBs, the 49ers defense does.

Thanks for the clarification, I thought they would face off gladiator style. ;)

Fair or unfair, we know top QBs are judged by how they do against each other. I'm simply saying Kaep has beaten top competition during the play-offs.

Do you mean comparing one QBs numbers against another? I don't think I'd call it unfair, just stupid.

Yes he has, I think he's an incredible talent, if he got his ego in check he'd really be able to tap his potential.

It is what it is. I'm not disagreeing with you mind you, but that's the nature of the position. Pitchers and QBs take the Ws and Ls.

As for the ego, we'll just agree to disagree. There is a fine line between ego and confidence, but I don't see any ego-related selfishness with Kaep. His coach raves about his work ethic and his teammates are supportive of him. His deal was structured in a very specific way to give the team flexibility to sign teammates to extensions and he only really gets $12M guaranteed (not the $61M originally reported) to give the team extra flexibility, which the locker room will appreciate as well.

Every single player in the NFL has to believe they can get the job done better than anyone else, even if they have no business thinking that way. That's how a 6th-string QB in college works his way up to a starter who gets drafted late in the 6th round and barely makes the team as a 4th-stringer, yet as early as his second season, he's telling a friend he's going to take the job from Pro Bowl and $103M man Drew Bledsoe. If you had overheard that conversation, you'd think he's crazy. Or if you found out after he's drafted in the 6th round, he tells the owner he's the best decision the franchise has ever made (while carrying a pizza nonetheless), you'd think this guy's ego is out of this world. Or how he's battling for a roster spot but insisting on buying a place close to the stadium even when his real estate agent is encouraging him to rent just in case, you'd think this kid isn't all there.

I like personal confidence in a player so long as it doesn't spiral out of control and develop into overconfidence and the ego becomes a hindrance to the team. Moss when he came to the Patriots was a huge asset because he knew he was great but he did everything for the team. Moss when he left the Patriots had let the ego get out of control again and thought the team did everything for him. He's a good example of how quickly things can shift from one end to another, but for now, I don't see that in Kaep. Maybe it will get out of control, but I don't see it yet.

Yeah he is a two-time rapist; I would not give him $20.00 a season if I were a GM.

Roethlisberger was NOT convicted, but he STILL was suspended for several games.

Message for Kaepernick is if there is a lot of smoke on his off field activities, he could still go to the bench.

The 49ers have a very good chance of going to the SB should they overcome two big ifs:
  • Kaepernick stays clean and have one of his best seasons
  • Jim Harbaugh does not explode like Jimmy Johnson did 20 years ago in Dallas

They have a lot of talent, the team is loaded on both sides of the football Kaepernick is the wildcard he could either make them or break them. Personally, I think the team would have been better off with Alex Smith. Smith may not be the talent or the playmaker Kaepernick is but he was a solid QB who managed the game well and did not make many mistakes.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office announced Thursday it does not have enough evidence to prosecute Kaepernick, 49ers receiver Quinton Patton or Seattle wide receiver Ricardo Lockette in what was initially reported as a “suspicious incident.”

"No charges, no indication that a criminal act was committed," said Ed Griffith of the State Attorney's Office. "She was alleging that she may have been the victim of a sexual assault, and there was no evidence."

For those who need it, crow will be served shortly.

Seems like par for the course nowadays.

I think we were all suspicious of the sexual assault story, however, the police report did say that the woman and all of the players were smoking pot. I wonder if Colin had to deliver a specimen before signing this contract?

Not everyone was willing to jump the gun about the story, but some did. You need to be careful with statements like the pot smoking one. As Shmessy pointed out in the other Colin thread. Where did it Specifically state that "ALL" the players were smoking pot? It could have been only 1, or 2, or 3 players.
