Amendola hung up on Adam Jones during 98.5 radio interview...

I guess I have a different take on it. I get concerned when someone can be "taken off his game" that easily. He's obviously sensitive to criticism. Now that there's blood in the water, I can see the media going after him if he doesn't perform or gets nicked up. He's shown a vulnerability that people love to exploit. He should have laughed it off, plugged his charity, and just not go on there again. He has to have known that people have been talking about his injuries. He has to be more professional than that.

A few things:
  • There may have been a pre-arranged agreement that there would not be questions about the injuries and Jones violated.
  • The interview was not live on the air and was an interview that was pretaped hours before the show (common for many player interviews for night time shows like The Adam Jones Show). Kaufmann doesn't say that in his article. Amendola may have figured that if he just hung up the interview would never see the light of the day. It wasn't like he hung up while live on the air. He might not have been rattled at all, but figured he could stop this interview from ever happening by hanging up.
Unfortunately, we are only getting the Adam Jones side of the story. He and Kauffman have a lot of media outlets where they can tell their side of the story where Amendola cannot. Jones could be 100% in the wrong, but he is spinning it as Amendola being the bad guy.

Personally, considering Amendola was doing this for a charity event and the interview was pretaped and not live on the air, the right thing for Jones and Kauffman to do would have been to never air it or say anything about it. Or at least until after the event happened.

I think some of what you're saying is far-fetched.

1) If there was an understanding, it would be seriously misleading to the point of unethical if there was an understanding that there would be no injury talk and the radio guys violated it and haven't disclosed it by now.

2) An interview about just a charity and nothing else? I find this far-fetched as well. People don't listen to interviews to hear someone plug their charity and nothing else. I'm sure if the talk were how great he was, Danny would have been fine with it.

Not saying you're wrong but your premise seems unlikely. I think it's exactly what it is, an interview where the guy got upset and bailed out. Without further explanation from Danny, that's the conclusion my senses tell me considering the radio hosts were surprised.

Anytime a radio or media shill gets hung up on is excellent. Contrary to the opinion of some of the posters here the only obligation DA has is to himself and the team. The haters can go pound sand.

Right those idiots continue to ask the same stupid questio. Good on ya Danny

First, there could have been an understanding that it would be a light interview without specifically stating no injury talk. Or Amendola may have been told by the Patriots media department (who sets up players interviews) that they agreed to no injury talk even though no agreement was made. It could be any number of scenarios.

Second, I never said the interview was going to be all about the charity, but when players go on to plug charities, it is usually an unwritten rule that they aren't going to ask a lot of hard hitting questions that would draw away from the message of the charity. The reason he is on is to plug a charity event, not make the focus of the interview about his injuries.

I'll never fully understand the attitude that has developed around here that being a **** to the media is somehow a good thing. Sure, it can be funny. But at some point it can be aggravating too. Just as an example, there were people on here praising Stork for his post draft press conference, when I thought he just came across as unprofessional.

Oh and I'm just speaking as a generalization. I didn't listen to the Amendola interview, so I don't have an opinion on how he handled it. I'm more so saying that I don't understand where this idea that's it's a positive thing to not treat the media with respect. They are just doing their job.

I don't think it was a good thing on what he did. I just don't think it was a big deal either.

Can't say I disagree. As I said in the following message I was more just generalizing the attitude that has developed around here over the last decade and a half or so. And I'm not saying this as a way to bash anyone in particular, I just don't get the line of thinking.

grrrrr I told Adam not to ask about the gerbils...

I agree. He should have taken the high ground with "This charity is so important I'll put up with you asking variations of the same question. Do you want to ask about my groin?"

I could understand a few questions about football and even the injuries, but if Amendola was on the show with the understanding that he was promoting a charity event.. then the host was being an ass. Amendola is not in politics. He doesn't owe any of us any explanation.

That Boston.com article is so smarmy. Adam Kaufman should apologize for writing such a crappy article.

The Globe and Boston.com HATES the Patriots - - did you see the Eric Wilbur piece last week that practically accused Kraft of shielding a murderer (AH)?

It's a campaign that's been going on for years.

From Kauffman's "piece":

"It’s worth pointing out, first, that Amendola was seemingly only on to promote his upcoming “Celebrity Waiter Night” on June 11 to benefit his Catches for Kids Foundation. Good for him. Interviews are motivated by plugging appearances or products all the time. No problem."

Umm....Adam, he wasn't "plugging" an appearance or product - - to the point, he was plugging a CHARITABLE FOUNDATION EVENT. It was not a selfish aim. I guess the Journalism school dropouts have landing pads with Boston.com and The Globe.

Evidently, Adam Kauffman's parents never instilled in him knowledge of the meaning of charity:

"....Does Amendola owe Jones or the Sports Hub an apology? While it’d be nice, nobody would logically expect that. Again, this is hardly the first time something like this has happened. But, in the future, he should realize answering challenging or unpleasant questions is simply part of the job, even if he’d rather focus his time and energy on how he’ll avoid being a disappointment and future cap casualty by the winter.

With next week’s “Celebrity Waiter Night” approaching, maybe he could have viewed it as another charitable use of his time. Phone lines are open."

This Kauffman guy is definitely as decent and socially mature as Ian "I'll Text During Myra's Funeral" Rappaport.

so...I guess ,given THIS thread's existence, I can start a thread called "I Turned On Adam Jones Show And Suddenly Farted"....seems to be just as important to know as this obvious Edelman hit thread.

Here's another Boston Globe genius:

Having a healthy discussion on Amendola today. There is a realization that this is the first adversity probably in his football career.

Zuri Berry - YOU, sir, are ignorant of the subject you are tweeting.

Finally some actual mature perspective.
From Bruce Allen -- Week Wrap – Just Another Week of Sports Media Trolling | Boston Sports Media Watch

"What? So an undrafted free agent who was cut by the Cowboys (publicly on Hard Knocks) and Eagles and bounced on and off their practice squads and then finally made the Rams, had some production, only to suffer a freak injury in which his clavicle pushed in and nearly crushed his his trachea and aorta and killed him, who then came back from that, and signed with New England and tore his groin in the first half of the first game of the season, and came back in that same game doesn’t know what adversity is? Not until Adam Jones asks him a few dumb questions?

Berry tried to then say this is the first time Amendola hasn’t been considered “great.”. Um, read the above paragraph.

Yes, these are the people paid to make their living talking about and covering sports."

Amendola may have overacted. Listening to the interview it was not a confrontational situation, and there did not appear to be any animosity leading up to it.

Danny Amendola’s Interview With Adam Jones Cut Short | CBS Boston

I think Amendola should have taken the high road here and just said “I am sorry Adam I actually have to jump off this call now, thanks for having me” hanging up just gives the media ammunition for articles and radio reports like this.

This is the result for Amendola. It was not worth it, he should have handled himself better.

Amendola hangs up on radio host after injury inquiries | NFL.com

I did not hear the interview when I posted previously, but Jones was not doing anything that I would consider grounds to hang up on him for, that is disrespectful and immature. Amendola agreed to an interview with a sports radio show, obviously they were not just going to have him on to plug his charity and hang up, they were going to ask some football questions. Amendola has missed 50% of games over the past 3 NFL seasons so being asked 2-3 questions relating to his health is not anything unexpected.

That is not the Patriots way; Belichick is very tight lipped with the media but he does not straight up disrespect them, and neither does Kraft.
