(serious): Colin Kaepernick 6 years 110+ million, with 61 million guaranteed

Yep, The 49's killed it with this deal.

Short of CK getting a career ending injury this is a very very team friendly deal.

Great deal for both sides, really. Kaepernick just became a very wealthy man regardless, and the 49ers are protected against serious injury or lack of production.

I don't care who you are, that's pretty funny.

Hard to argue against him based on the record they've had with him as a starter, and without a flagrant non-call on the last play of that game, he'd be a Super Bowl-winning QB. I don't particularly love what I see from him in reference to his accuracy and decision-making, and I've never been a fan of running QBs because they tend to run into problems eventually, so to speak, but in his case, considering his youth also, I think the positives far outweigh the negatives. When you have a young QB like this, you do what you can to secure him and work from there. Good move overall, I would say.

team friendly deal, so it is a good move for them

i don't ever see him evolving into a top tier QB......just don't like his football smarts or his dedication to detail.....

but he's good enough to win with if you have other pieces, and there's few of those around the league as it is

I'm not sure if it will hurt as much as you think. Don't forget the cap is supposed to keep rising in the next couple of years. With Kaepernick's contract, it's a relatively easy one for the 49ers to get out of if Harbaugh doesn't win the Super Bowl this season, get's fired, and Baalke wants to move away from Kaepernick.

The 49ers have to pay Crabtree and Mike Iupati or lose them after this year. Vernon Davis is already crying for more money. Reports saying the 49ers traded for Stevie Johnson because they don't plan on resigning Crabtree because of cap space were out there before this extension to Kaep.

When a team can't pay their top players peanuts anymore, it'll hurt.

When I look at teams like the Jests and Dullphins and a host of others too miserable to mention, when you consider how long the gap between Staubach and Aikman was, etc., etc. I think this makes sense. CK has taken the 'niners to the big dance once; he's a playmaker and apparently durable. To coin a phrase, "The NFL is a Quarterback League;" they're payin' the one they got who ain't bad.

I don't know. Your damned if you do, damned if you don't with so called elite QBs nowadays. If they let him get away the fans and press would rip them. When they signed him it seems many ripped them. Kind of a no win.

But yeah, it is going to be interesting to see the roster turnaround due to the cap for the 49ers. Vernon Davis is just waiting to see what Jimmy Graham does with his contract and then the poop will hit the fan cuz you know it's going to be a huge contract.
I do not consider Kaepernick to be an elite QB.

Ranked 20th among NFL QBs with 3197 passing yards
Ranked 17th among NFL QBs with 21 touchdown passes
Ranked 10th among NFL QBs with a 91.6 QB rating
Ranked 31st among NFL QBs with a 58.4% completion percentage

In the playoffs he was 45/82 54.9%, 576 yards, 3 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 74.0 QB rating, and he fumbled the football 3 times last season.

The 49ers have the most talented roster in the NFL; Kaepernick is the beneficiary of that. That is going to change now with his cap hit, the players like Bowman, Willis, Davis, and others will be lost because the 49ers will not have the money.

And hopefully they take a stroll right on over to New England after they're cut loose.

So, Crabtree will be a FA next year, the Pats will get cap relief from Murderery TE.... and will sign Crabtree and resign Revis. I like it.

Yup you can't please everyone. Some will rip the team for signing him to the extension and some will rip the team if they let him go. Colin has been blessed a to be around such great talent. However, he certainly isn't the only QB who is blessed to be surrounded by great talent. Russell Wilson has been surrounded by phenomenal talent with the Seahawks, that is just as good as 49ers and has certainly benefited in the same way Colin has. Nevertheless, Colin will hopefully improve as a QB slowly and hopefully he'll learn from his mistakes as a QB as he gains more experience. The 49ers cap has taken a hit with all these new deals , but I hold out hope that the 49ers can squeeze Bowman, Crabtree, Willis etc. in. Overall, I am looking forward to the new season and hopefully the 49ers and Pats make the superbowl this year. Who knows, but we'll see.

If he was a top-10 passer in addition to his skills as a runner, you'd be able to make a compelling case that he was the most valuable QB in the league. Because he's a mediocre passer (which your stats illustrate), he's still a top-10ish QB, and with his age and potential for further growth, I just really don't see how this contract is so terrible.

It kinda reminds me of when Peyton Manning signed his huge extension in 2004, and everyone thought that it would cripple the Colts' cap. Instead, the cap expanded rapidly, to the point that by latter part of the deal, stiffs like his brother Eli were making more than him.

Interesting deal. Either the team thinks their QB will never become elite, or they already know they'll be revisiting this in a couple of years.

Kaepernick can run no doubt but as a QB he still not elite, even if you add in the 500+ yards he runs for he still is under 4000 total yards, and his accuracy is the thing that stands out most as concerning. I am not saying he is a bad QB I am just saying he is probably in the 12-18 range of QBs in the NFL and $18.3M annually seems excessive for that.

I do not think it will cripple the 49ers but they have a ton of players coming up on paydays and it will be tricky.

The 49ers offense is #1 in the league with any of Brady/Rodgers/Brees/Manning and probably is top 3 with Wilson/Luck/Roethlisberger/Rivers/Romo/Ryan.

People are seriously underestimating how good Kaepernick's talent was around him his last couple of years and this upcoming year.

QBs I would take over Kaepernick:

Brady
Manning
Rodgers
Brees
Wilson
Roethlisberger
Rivers
Romo
Ryan
Foles
Luck
Newton
RGIII

Borderline:
Stafford
Cutler
Flacco
Tannehill
Smith (alex)

Having talent around helps but it does not make any magic, you put Sanchez there and 49ers would stink just like the Jets.

Some names on this list over CK are an absurd IMO, Cam Newton? Cutler? Seriously?

CK became a starter 2 years ago and went deep in playoffs twice and we could make a case of 2 SB appearances if not by that 100% CK fault pass against Sherman and he will learn from that for sure. Beat Brady in Foxboro, made Rodgers his *****, pulled a huge comeback against the hot Falcons in the NFC game the season before this last one.

And all this very young with a high ceiling, he's a hard worker, durable, physical guy and smart playcalling the option, I've never seen him exposing himself in a stupid running play like RG3.

He's a proven QB for me and let's say, if I have to choose one of this young QB's to replace Brady, options begin Wilson, CK, Luck and RG3, he would be the second in my list after Luck and that could change reassessing this in a couple of years.

Wow, that's a pretty crazy list, I gotta say. I'd agree re: Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Brees, Wilson, Roethlisberger, Ryan, Luck, and Newton. But Rivers, Romo, Foles, and RG3 as definites? In my book, they're all borderline at best, along with Stafford. Of the rest (Cutler, Flacco, Tannehill, Smith), I'd take Kaepernick over them and never think twice about it.

Which puts Kaepernick right around the top 10 mark. Given his age, potential, and the length of the contract, I don't see that as a significant overpay. Within a couple of years, that deal might not break the top 10 for AAV on QB contracts. At a bare minimum, worst case scenario, I still know I'd much rather be paying Kaepernick that kind of money than someone like Flacco or Stafford.

Ironically, a lot of the arguments being used against Kaepernick in this thread are pretty similar to the arguments that were used against Brady earlier in his career. Yes, he has a very strong team and coach around him. But it's no accident that they're in the NFCCG every year. And yet we have people saying that they'd consider taking Alex Smith over Kaepernick? We already saw that play out: Kaepernick is better, period.

And FWIW, I'm saying all of this as someone who doesn't even really like the guy. He seems like a ****,but that doesn't make him a bad football player.

Flacco would thrive in the SF offense. I'd take him over (current) Kaepernick in that situation, 10 times out of 10.

How the hell did Kaep make Rodgers anything? He didn't play Rodgers, he played the Packers D.
