Torn ACL's around the league

http://www.ourlads.com/nfldepthcharts/depthchart/DAL

1. Is that the worst defense (on paper) in NFL history?
2. Besides Melton, do the Patriots have better defensive starters at 10 out of 11 positions (including better backups)?
And it's even worse when you consider that even a good year from Melton would be a downgrade from what the Cowboys got from Hatcher last season, when they had an already awful defense.

I apologize in advance if this takes a bit of a dark turn, but my first thought after hearing about the ACL tear was Easley, since Lee is another guy who has multiple ligament tears in just the last few years. Hopefully Easley's able to put the injuries behind him better than Lee has.

Aaargh! Please don't scare me like that. When I saw the thread title I thought you meant one of our guys. In an offseason thing. IIRC it happened to the Pats several times with rookies over past summers.

Actually I'd rather not talk about acls around the league. I don't want to jinx us. Especially considering our 1st round pick has already had more than his share.

Yeah, I know what the thread is and it still gives me a jolt. Considering our current situation with Gronk and Easley, could we get an "around the league" added to that title mods?

Oh there will be many more. Especially amongst the rookies. The Chargers GM was on NFL network on Sirius yesterday and said that he didn't know a single football person that liked the later draft (to which Polian agreed) simply because rookies haven't had an appropriate enough time to adjust and get into TC shape. Said he expected more season-ending injuries among rookies because of that. But the ratings were high, so it's all good right?

Word is, Goody's got a pilot for a medical football reality show in the works.

I wonder if the rash of torn ACLs have something to do with over working out and/or PEDs. Your body can't handle all of that extra muscle mass

Paging gymrat...

:D I had the same thought, but SalemPats is way off base on this one. Ligaments are generally protected by muscle mass, whereas tendons can be challenged by the muscular tissue if it is overdeveloped relative to the tendons, and there are studies linking tendon rupture to the use of anabolic steroids (although by necessity these studies are both relatively small and retrospective). ACL injuries should be prevented by muscular development, particularly if the athlete is following a traditional football conditioning program where they squat and deadlift every other day. There are ways to train that would make the ACL weak relative to the opposing musculature, but I'd be stunned if that was something that anybody with experience in NFL or Div1 football could do for long without getting the living **** beat out of him by his strength coach.

Wait, are you suggesting NFL strength and conditioning coaches know about these things?!

Next you'll be telling me these coaches individualize such things as a player's weight and muscle-fat percentages according to what they feel is in the player's best interest!

and so it begins...will be holding my breath from now until the first game

We may see a few in Foxboro unfortunately. We have quite a few guys with this type of baggage. Keller would add another one. Overall, injuries were ridiculous in NE last season. I really hope we don't have another run like that one in the upcoming season. I'm hoping our boys can be reasonably healthy this season.

Ok I changed the title since there will be many more coming unfortunately.

This thread has bad juju........

Gracias!

We can change our own titles now?
