Pats draft QB Jimmy Garropolo from Eastern Illinois in the 2nd round

Yes please, because it seems you and I have different definitions.

For me, a luxury pick is drafting a player (like the one's I mentioned earlier) a year or 2 before its needed. Giving them a year or 2 of experience in their system, as opposed to throwing them out to the wolves.

I thought Easley and JG were both luxury picks...

I think you really have to look at the big picture here.

Yes, Brady is under contract for 4 more years, but contract years don't guarantee performance. I don't know why people are assuming that he'll play at a continued high level just because he's under contract (it kills me to type that), and the drop-off can come quite suddenly. Sure, John Elway went out on top, but he also retired early. For those who continued to play until they were forced out, the end came a lot quicker than anyone could have anticipated.

Dan Marino played until he was 38. When he was 37, he had a decent season by his standards, 57% completion, 23 TDs/15 INTs, 80.0 Rating. The next year, it dropped to 55%, 12 TDs, 17 INTs, 67.4 Rating, and he was done. At age 35, Jim Kelly went from 22 TDs/13 INTs to 14 TDs/19 INTs a year later. Brett Favre had arguably his most productive season at age 40 with 33 TDs/7 INTs, then perhaps his worst the next year with 11 TDs/19 INTs.

So yes, Brady is under contract for 4 more years. However, to assume he will be a starter-level QB is not guaranteed. For all we know, Jimmy could be starting next season.

Also, I think we all agree we need a replacement at some point. For those who think we can get one a year or two down the road, I'm just not convinced you can order a starting QB easily when you need one. Both Kiper and Mayock stated this year's draft had a lot more draftable QBs than usual, so it may well be that this was the best year to dip into the QB replacement pool. JG might be better than all of the other options we'd have in the next few years, so if you believe he's the guy, why not invest the pick?

Any team investing in any QB with a top pick will carry some risk, and if that prospect doesn't work out, it hurts that team, regardless of where or when they're drafted. Even desperate teams that can easily justify the risk get hit hard when a QB prospect doesn't work out (Vikings and Ponder, Jaguars and Blaine Gabbert). We've taken a risk, no doubt. But we've also done the best job to minimize that risk, by bringing him in to learn from Tom without being pressed into duty to replace a legend.

And the reverse is true as well; when a top QB prospect hits, it doesn't matter when or where they were drafted. Think Packers fans are still sad about the team "wasting" a 1st on Aaron Rodgers when they were starting Brett Favre?

The bottom line is quality starting QBs are not easy to find. For those who call it a luxury pick, I disagree. Just because the timing might not be as convenient as some would do in their Madden games doesn't mean we have the "luxury" of picking a great QB later on when we're ready.

Solder was already talking retirement,we don't have anything remotely the caliber of Easley n Collins was our most explosive, talented lb the day he showed at camp. Mayo, spikes n hightower r not gamechangers with their last 2 rather slow, very average n a liability in this passing league. Not saying gp was totally bad pick as long as long as they could still have brought a wr in with the talent to have the full confidence in rather than lottery ticket hope of Dobson/lafell. Not exactly against gp/easley so much as looking at what could have been kony early, marquise Lee sui fill(whatever) nix, martin, etc. Could have got 3 key contributors out of that. I also c wilfork is in decline,$$ could have been used for Mack or somebody. Anyways its not that I'm so against gp,so long as they would have brought a wr on board we have full confidence in rather than lottery ticket hope come January. Cuz once were locked in that game in January n our wr's get squatted on its to late for help. We will b saying we r getting a real wr this off season n we will win it all next yr. Just like u were thinking to yourself last yr n the yr b4 that.

Insanity is doing the same thing over n over n expecting a different result

I don't c Brady going off the diving board all at once. His arm is stronger than when he was a rookie. In Marino's day n b4 that qbs lasted til 35 tops 4 the most part. Let's just say I'm willing to bet favre playing til 40 is the new trend. There's surgery's, more knowledge bout joint tendon, ligament support,n the x factor, small amounts of HGH to heal, rebuild, strengthen cells of eroding joints, ligaments, muscle,n tendons used for throwing. And its medically cleared cuz its for recovery n healing n not bulking muscles. Most people think HGH n roids as very similar, however they r completely different. They can b used together for increased musclegrowth, power n explosion, but they r completely different. Roids builds much more muscle n has very little effect on joints, tendons, ligaments needed 4 throwing.

Not sure how Easley qualifies under your definition as the Pats have needed a pass rusher at 3-tech for some time now.

By that definition, so was Solder, the next 10 year LOT.

those were painful to read

I agree with you, nowadays there's a lot more knowledge on sports medicine, advanced supplements for recovering, and Brady looks like a guy who takes care of himself, he's married with a supermodel that just eats the good stuff and he as a husband probably supports and follow her on this diet (bad for him, I would cook barbecue every single day) , actually I think he looks thinner every season, should put a little bulk, but he knows his body so I trust he knows what's better for him to stay healthy and efficient.

Don't know about the HGH stuff but the juice is awesome, NFL should authorize testosterone replacement therapy like some UFC fighters are getting, a lot of controversy over there, I understand since gives you a huge advantage on fights, not so much on football, well maybe for lineman.

Ive long thought that NFL players should be allowed to receive supervised HGH treatments (if thats what they need) when recovering from a bad injury.

We ask them to sacrifice their bodies in our colloseums. We should let them do what can be done to heal.

True...

But as for filling out the DT position on the depth chart, we had the bodies. Wilfork, Kelly, Armstead, Siliga, and Chris Jones.

This forum needs a "confused" option in the ratings bar...

When was Nate Solder talking retirement? I have not seen or heard anything of that nature, ever!

Mayo is a top five 4-3 LB in the entire NFL, he was the tenth pick in the 2008 NFL draft, and he ran a 4.54 forty, had a vertical of 40 ½ along with putting up 22 reps on the bench. Hightower ran a 4.62 forty at nearly 270lbs. No doubt, Collins is extremely talented but the other two are as well.

Chris Jones does not get a lot of love on this board for a player who had 7 sack in 15 games played as a rookie who came in after week one on a waiver claim. I think people underestimate his talent level, if you look at the metrics that matter most to his position he is actually quite talented –

40-yard dash – 5.10
20-yard dash – 2.99
10-yard spilt – 1.87
20-yard shuttle – 4.44
Vertical jump – 31”
3-cone drill – 7.34
225lb bench press – 30

He has the tools to be solid NFL player, and he is a hard working kid.
