But to state that NFL backup QBs with no starting experience "easily get $3 million a season" is just more of the same type of fan overhype we saw with Michael Bishop - who many thought should be starting ahead of both Bledsoe AND Brady - and then was subsequently cut by Belichick - followed by being cut by the CFL
Posters here continue to mix up the 2 categories:
1. Backups/starting caliber QBs on teams who have no solidified opening day starter such as Mike Vick, Ryan Fitzpatrick, etc
2. The other 90% of the NFL's backups who get peanuts, such as what you're suggesting
There seems to be a popular misconception that all of a sudden the going rate for backup QBs in in the 3+ million dollar range, and that simply isn't true.
Just looking at the AFC alone:
EAST
NEP--Ryan Mallett
BUF--Thad Lewis
MIA--Matt Moore
NYJ--Mike Vick/Geno Smith (the exception that falls into category 1)
NORTH
PIT--Gradkowski
CLE--Hoyer/Manziel doesn't matter
CIN--Josh Johnson 2013/AJ McCarron
BAL--Tyrod Taylor
SOUTH
IND--Hasselbeck 1.75m for 2014
JAX--Stanzi
HOU--Keenum
TEN--Whitehurst
WEST
DEN--Osweiler
KC---Daniel 2.35m for 2014 (
could be considered one of the exceptions out of 16 AFC teams)
SD---Clemons
OAK--McGloin
So, after examining all 16 AFC teams, it's obviously pretty apparent that at least 14, maybe 15 of them have backups that are playing for peanuts--meaning that you're not really wrong...
