So, are the Pats now going to keep their SS 'in the box' like Seattle does?

Ideally the ss mans up on the te. Which would allow our only qwik twitch defender Collins to blitz. Browner can play the ss position as high of a level that its ever been played.

Collins with his explosion n size needs to add 10lbs of muscle and do more blitzing. I still say browner play a lot of ss. His skill set screams ss. He lacks speed n it started showing to play corner. He is 6" 3 1/2 223 lbs and known for physical play n hard Tackling. Ss's specialize in man up on te's. How can that not fit. He has trouble with great speed as a corner. That won't b a prob at ss covering te's. He can cover better than chancellor cuz Noway chancellor could ever play corner. So in that regard he is better than chancellor. Chancellor is a harder hitter but Browner is a physical and sure tackler and can drop the hammer in his own right and is far superior in coverage than chancellor. Just cuz browner is the ss doesn't mean he can't b matched up with a big wr from the ss spot from time to time. I think Ryan is ready to step in as the #2 corner at nearly 6 feet and about 200 lbs. He is physical agile with very good makeup speed. Dennard in the slot with McCourt y and browner manning the safety spots. 2 safety's that can cover like corners n tackle with the best of them. Now only if we can get a qwik twitch passrusher. Let's hope Easley is healthy n can play up to the hype.
That is y bills drafting is so heavily criticized. In this passing league a playmaking wr n explosive edge rusher is more important than any single position outside qb. Bill has passed over future standouts in favor of complete busts. He has reached for de,wr"s that became complete busts. Tavon Wilson was the last straw. He should have known that with his recent track record that if the Wilson reach failed that he would be ripped into. His free passes were all used up. I like the fact we have reevis/browner but db has been his most heavily drafted position and needed to turn to free agency to fix the db"s from being poor and a glaring hole.

The assinine Joycean and ee cummings affectations aside, I don't know why I waste time with your not even wrong assertions. What exactly have Megatron and Vince Jackson's teams ever won, or even produced a winning season? So much for your absolute certainty that super WRs are all important.

I'd like to have one, but the Pats never had one, except for a shell of one briefly, and may even be about to break tradition if AD recovers and steps up.

Sneaking a safety into the box only works if you can be disruptive up front and you don't have to defend too long.

AFC Championship against Denver... Manning had all day with a clean pocket and not a dirt stain on his uniform either.

You can sneak the safety as part of an overall play call, but not as a general rule unless you have the other team under such duress that everything is a check down or dump pass or quick screen.

The closest thing the Patriots have to Kam Chancellor is Brandon Browner. He isn't likely to play safety this season, except for rare occasions. Jamie Collins won't play SS. interesting theory, but no.

The Patriots lineup will most likely be...
CB: Revis
CB: Dennard
SS: Ryan
FS: McCourty

Browner will cover TE's and rotate with Dennard at #2 CB.
Backup SS: Harmon, Chung (one will be cut)
Backup FS: Thomas, Wilson

Emergency depth: Ebner, Slater

I believe someone listed above gets beat out by an UDFA.

Nobody here is saying we need super wr's. Just a talented playmaker who can win on 3rd n 10 or whenever needed. We have the best qb ever n a great schemer but clearly our wr's have been squatted on in BIG games. I never said we need Calvin Johnson to win although it wouldn't hurt. However it sounds like your implying they make no difference. Who was the last team that won n didn't have a playmaker at wr. Even seattlegot a lift from harvin in the championship YET in order to repeat they saw the importance of upgrading the position to repeat. And they have a dominating defense n still see the need for a wr. There is no way u can say a playmaking wr isn't important. And your right we don't have one n look at how the season has ended since 2010. Offense has struggled when it counted. Denver's d shut them down n it gets much tougher than that including Denver's improvements n players like miller/wolf returning. It only gets tougher this coming season. Dude I'm not saying Calvin or Gordon is everything to win a championship, but some legit talent at wr is very important. There's no denying that. And we seriously lack it. DB's r simply bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than our most productive wr's last yr.Changing that greatly improves our chances. That's all anybody is saying.

I can't help but wonder if this is related to what Bill has tried to do with big, physical players like Adrian Wilson and Tavon Wilson in the past;
Tavon Wilson isn't what I would consider a "physical" safety. I've yet to see him lay somebody out and make them fear crossing the middle.

and he's listed at 6'0 215lbs.... pretty standard size for a SS these days. Not what I would consider "big" for a SS.

I wouldn't be surprised if Tavon gets cut before the season even starts.

I would. Belichick loves Special Teams/role player depth.

Which is why he signed Patrick Chung again. Who coincidentally could replace Tavon's exact roster spot.

I think that one or two of the 'depth safety'/'special teams player' roster spots is completely up for grabs. TWilson, Ebner, Kanorris Davis, Chung, Deering, Thomas - a lot of players competing for those roster spots.

Nice. We'd have a waste of a second rounder replacing an absolute waste of a second rounder.

Remember how psyched we got in the Good Ol Days in the first decade of the 21st century when BB would trade down in the 1st and accumulate that extra 2nd round pick next year?

Good times! Good Times!

Ah yes. I remember the days of posters starting Chuck Norris threads in celebration of Patrick "Near Miss" Chung. I found a GIF that best represents Chung (Chung being the car).

lol what country was that in?

I don't understand the premise of a thread asking which ONE defensive formation will BB use all next season.

Anyhow, the base case is:
  • Revis & Browner man up on the receivers (WR or otherwise) who make most sense in that particular week's matchup.
  • Somebody -- Arrington/Dennard/Ryan -- mans up on the opponent's third receiver, when that makes matchup sense.
  • McCourty and at least one other DB play areas of the field.
That said, McCourty can probably be the lone deep back, allowing some other DB to play closer in ... IF we assume all three of Revis, Browner and McCourty are healthy and unsuspended at the same time.

Complicating things further -- given who the Pats' most talented defensive players now are, I'd expect opponents to be biased toward trying power sets against us.

In order to have a SS play closer to the LOS, one needs to have a SS.
