Realistic compensation for Ryan Mallet?

People don't seem to remember how badly Brady and Cassel played in the preseason. It's stunning to judge Mallet off of that. Brady threw 4 interceptions in his last preseason game of 2001, and Cassel looked abysmal in his preseason games. Judging a QB by his preseason games is crazy.

Although it worked out ok for Cassell, generally speaking looking horrible in the pre-season is NOT a proven path to success

In fact I'd say looking horrible in pre-season and playing well in the real season is more than the exception than the rule

Like it or not, Mallett is not good enough to prevent Belichick from seeking to upgrade the backup position with a 2nd round pick

Why would Mallet stick with the Patriots after his contract runs out? Answer that.

I think he'll get cut.

That's the wrong question

The question is, why would the Patriots stick with Mallet after his contract runs out

And the answer is they wouldn't and will not

And that's the answer to why I doubt anyone is going to trade for him - and if we are lucky he will be supplanted at #2 by this year's 2nd round pick, and possibly cut

Though I think they'll keep him for the remainder of his contract - I'd still like to Garoppolo to play so well he supplants Mallet and makes a roster spot available for someone else

You really have things backward. BECAUSE Mallet will NOT resign with the Patriots, the Patriots could not risk not having another QB. If Mallet agreed to sign on for another 3 years with the Patriots at short money, the Patriots would sign him instantly.

if he gets cut am sure a team or two will take a look but I don't think that there was ever anyone looking to trade for him the only reason media runs stories about him is because us fans talk about him so much

I would imagine that you're correct, upstater. "Short money" being the key phrase, of course.

Of course, we really have no idea regarding Belichick's feelings about his potential or ability to run our offense in live game settings--so it's hard to speculate one way or another. For all we know, Belichick was never 1/2 as thrilled as some here seem to believe.

One thing to consider is that if Belichick thought that he was the answer for our QB position of the future, they'd likely have offered him something in the 2-3-4 million dollar range to remain here. The position of QB is certainly important enough to warrant figuring out how to come up with another 2-3 million dollars per season if he liked him that much. I really don't see anyone else giving him much more.

It isn't the wrong question though. Why would Mallett stay here as a backup behind Brady who might play for another 4+ years when he could probably go to any number of QB needy teams and try to compete for a starting spot? If we wanted to keep Mallett we would probably have to pay him like a QB competing for a starting spot.

Mallett is 25 now and will be 26 when the season starts. That makes him 30 by the time Bradys contract runs out. Yes Bradys game might decline rapidly as we have seen before with older QBs. But I don't think that Mallett would take that bet over going to a team that needs a quarterback.

They could offer, but Mallet would never take it. He's never had a chance to be #1. He can make at least $3m elsewhere and possibly more later if he shows he can be a #1. This is why Belichick HAD to take a QB (not necessarily in the 2nd round however). The only other option was trading Brady.

He won't make "at least $3M elsewhere" if JAG beats him out and becomes the backup QB. Were that to happen, he'd likely have to take a 1 year vet minimum possibly with incentives elsewhere in a prove it deal.

I see it totally differently. The Patriots reliably carry 3 quarterbacks in the years that they draft a QB of significance. They "value the unknown" of the developmental quarterback with potential, as well as valuing the readiness of a non-rookie to actually step in and take over a game.

2005: Brady, Flutie, Cassel
2008: Brady, Cassel, O'Connell
2011: Brady, Hoyer, Mallett

It's been 3 more years, it's time.

Even if there wasn't a 3 year pattern (nice catch btw) carrying three QBs would make sense.

Why is everyone in such a rush to dump our backup QB?

2014: Brady, Mallett, Garoppolo

The best move for the Patriots would be to keep Mallett and hope that some team suffers a major injury to their QB or their QB struggles during the preseason and trades for Mallett. Otherwise let him play out his deal and walk, maybe we get a compensatory pick.

Agreed
IF JAG outplays Mallet in camp or plays about as well, the Pats should be very open to dealing The Hammah even for low conditional picks because I don't think he'll demand much on the open market given no real NFL resume.

I agree last season we finished the season with –

-Jake Bequette
-DJ Williams
-Isaac Sopoaga
-Ja’Gared Davis
-Kanorris Davis
-Justin Green
-Chris Barker
-Steve Beauharnais

I am sure we can dedicate a roster spot to Mallett and Garopollo in 2014.

One would hope the future HOF who is going to push Tom Brady out the door in 2015 can beat out the “Hammah” for the backup QB spot.

In 2000 his 1st year TFB was only the 3rd or 4th QB, so it's no way a given JAG beats out Mallet

I'm not sure where or how in this theory of your that Mallet has Belichick by the balls because they need a backup so much - nor do I understand why you think the Patriots are precluded from bringing in a veteran, or even a late round draft choice.

Mallet quite simply has no leverage whatsoever to get another contract from the Patriots, let alone a chance to start with another team

If Mallet were any good you'd see two signs of that

#1 Another team might have actually traded for him before or during the draft
#2 Belichick would not have used a SECOND ROUND PICK to upgrade over Mallet

Texans don't really want to go into the season with Ryan Fitzpatrick as their starter, do they?

Ryan Mallett trade to Houston Texans still possible - NFL.com
Mallet might be cut. They might be hoping to get him for free - assuming they actually want him.

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle wonders where this "Mallet to the Texans" crap is coming from. Fitzpatrick has been a mediocre starter. Please tell me what Mallet has done.

As for NFL.com, I've seen them be 100% wrong on subjects we saw at training camp and THEY HAD NO REPORTER THERE AT THE TIME. I can see Kurt Weslyan quoting Dave Dameshek as a knswledgable source. (I might have their names misspelled.)

On the high end, maybe a 7th.
