Interesting comment on Brady/Garoppolo by SI's Andrew Brandt

Just saw this while putting this morning's links together and found it interesting:

From his "10 Trending Topics" from around the league:

"3. Brady Altruism
The Patriots’ second-round selection of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo made me immediately think about the extension that Tom Brady signed last year. Despite some reports that he “took less to help the team,” I noted that Brady actually received $3 million more than previously scheduled to earn in 2013 and 2014, with much better cash flow.

Next year, however, will tell the story of whether Brady made a sacrifice for the team. Brady is currently scheduled to play for $7 million, an absurdly low number for an A-list QB. If Brady is the starting quarterback for the Patriots a year from now and making $7 million, I will be thoroughly impressed (and surprised) by his altruism.

The Garoppolo selection brought a potentially different angle to this. I could see Tom Brady as the backup quarterback making $7 million in 2015 (or his scheduled $8 million in 2016 or $9 million in 2017). That, of course, would require that 1) Brady accept backup status, and 2) Garoppolo earn the starting job, though I find both of these possibilities unlikely.

I expect Brady’s contract will be upwardly adjusted next year rather than him playing for a fraction of what his peers will be making. Garoppolo’s entry into the mix, combined with the precipitous scheduled decrease in Brady’s contract next year, presents a Hmmm moment. Stay tuned."

I would think that if Brady was either being traded/released after 2014 the team would just extended Mallett and allow him an opportunity to start.

I'm still trying to figure out the end game for Brady. Selling the moated mansion in LA, building an estate in Brookline. Either the Brady's just like to spec and flip huge homes or he is setting up long term roots and the Brady's believe Mass. is the best local to raise and educate their kids. I never thought Tom Brady would imitate the likes of Dan Marino in retirement and sell the Brady brand like many former big names....and because of the Brady's combined wealth, I hope he never lowers himself to that level.

Relax. I don't think Tom uses isotoner gloves.

BB: Hey Tom we want you to be the backup.
TB: That's a good one Bill.
BB: No really.
TB: There's a better chance I'll grant you one night with Giselle.

I guess Im just a homer because I believe Brady actually intends to abide by this current contract?

And I suppose Im a pervert (or a typical Man) to imagine that being married to a gorgeous, lithe supermodel doesn't have Brady a little willing to trade respective women with Belichick for a night or three.. ;)

No. When Brady is not the starter he is gone.
Can you imagine Garoppolo starting with Tom on the bench? He'll throw an incomplete and everyone, including his teammates, looks at Brady.

Belichick is not an idiot. He won't do that.

I can see Brady being on a shadow roster for a year or two if an injury occurs, but that has nothing to do with his current contract.

Brady is still at the top of his game. I saw a reporter on ESPN who had it right. When Gronk was in there last year, Brady looked great. Especially since Brady had just come off what I consider the best year of his career just 6 months earlier (2012-2013).
isn't it supposed to be the other way around......the best player on the field is supposed to make the others around him better? That has been Brady's MO his entire career. Now it takes Gronk to make Brady look great not the other way around that doesn't bode well for the near future with respect to Brady's capabilities as an elite QB.

When Brady of old had crap receivers he had modest #s. Same situation now. With Gronk, receiver corps > crap. Without Gronk & especially with rooks and a joint hampered Amandola = CRAP.

He was throwing to Hooman, Mulligan and Edelman. Thompkins too.

Are you being serious? Other than Edleman, he was throwing to guys stuck in molasses. Maybe I should've been out there. So he can make me look great.

Sophistry of the lowest form.

Let's just forget that Brady still put up 3rd most points per game in all the NFL despite throwing to Rookies.

Unless JG sucks, that is the contract. Bill isn't the type to re-do a contract with a gun pointed at his head. I don't think it will come to this but if this does end up badly, a holdout or contract demand would be the beginning.

Here's what I refuse to believe: the best I've ever seen the Patriots on offense was the 2012-2013 year, when Brady's great numbers were dampened somewhat by the 26 rushing touchdowns (4 of them by Brady). Until Gronk got hurt, the Patriots were steamrolling teams with offense. Even great defenses such as the Ravens were getting plowed (this was the Ravens Super Bowl year, and early in the season, they couldn't stop the Patriots O).

It is very hard to believe that 6 months after such a season Brady lost it.

It is much easier to believe the loss of Welker, Gronk, Hernandez and even Lloyd and Branch contributed to the relatively anemic offense.

I just don't see Brady holding out for more money now that he's received the bulk of a heavily front loaded contract.

Sacrilegious perhaps...

but maybe his shoulder is worse then we all know?

Ok I'll bite..... Have all of his stats not deteriorated over the last 3 seasons? 2011 was his best statistical season and since then they have gone down. Interesting since 2011 is Gronks second season and the last time he played a full 16 games.

The irony of your post "sophistry" is that Brady had 25 TD's last year (those are the actual points he scored)......ranking him 11th overall last year...He had 34 in 2012 4th overall and 39 in 2011 rank 4th overall. You may want to rethink your sophistry post since it would appear to apply more to you than me.

Let me be clear on something, I am not saying he isn't still a top tier QB, because obviously he is as his stats show, I just don't know that he can elevate other players level of play as he has in the past. Maybe time and TB12 will prove me wrong.

I always wondered what it would be like when the whispers started...(ugh)

It's definitely going to an interesting 3-4 years. Appreciate the good times while they last :(

It's sophistry to pretend that the quality of a QBs weapons has nothing to do with his success.

And its sophistry to pretend that its a direct reflection on any quarterback however great that he did less with complete unknowns.

In 2012-2013, the season before last, the Patriots had the 4th highest scoring offense of all time. You're not giving him credit for that.
