Does this just make too much sense? (Andre Johnson wants out of Houston)

So, then OvertheCap has it wrong on Sopoaga???
Do you have the details of the contract that Sopoaga signed with the Eagles? It could be that he did not get a signing bonus.

Mallet + Amendola + 4th rd pick

for

Andre Johnson + 5th rd pick

I know its not a fair trade but its better than nothing for both teams.

I would offer Mallet + Amendola + 2nd rounder for Andre Johnson + 4th. Dunno if Texans would bite, but I'd be doing cartwheels if they did!

That's right. Sopoaga had guaranteed money, but no signing bonus.. Thanks for the correction.

It also means that trading Amendola and Mallett for Johnson is easier for Both teams to do after June 1st.

You cant be serious?
they also think Andre Johnson would give them a better shot at the Super Bowl than NEP and that they would be the favorite for the Division.

Obviously, this sounds like a ridiculous deal.. a borderline HOF WR for an unproven QB....

But it does make sense. if Andre is gonna drop into ***** mode like this after all these years and wont play for HOU, then most likely they'll just cut him.

If you're OB, why not just at lest get something for him? Especially a guy you know and knows the playbook.

Now this trade is only plausible if the Texans plan on releasing Andre anyway

The consensus in texans board is to trade him since he's still at his highest value, which is going to decline fast from now on since he is going to hit the age of 33.

Really, if he's decided to hold out and it seems he has always been a quiet and ethical guy (so we can assume he must have discussed that internally before the vent, and didn't get a good answer), there's no point in strong arm him.

I think the Texans had a nice draft, I don't know why they drafted Savage, if it's because they liked him or because it was the last QB available and they needed to come off the draft with a QB anyway. But the plan is clearly a 2-3 year project, BoB wants to put his system there, not reaching for anyone, building a balanced roster, he will probably follow BB's method which is proven. Having a locker room cancer on board doesn't help.

Texans would be doing cartwheels for that.

We'd probably get more if we offered Amendola and the 2nd rounder instead of Mallet, Amendola and the 2nd rounder.... :D

Amendola could be a part of it, yes. The problem with that is the entirety of Amendola's dead money would hit this year's cap for the Patriots. That would be an additional $2.645 Million on the cap. Yes, they could still fit Johnson's contract under the cap as well by simply guaranteeing $9M of his 10M salary and treating it as a signing bonus by spreading it out over the 3 years left on the contract.

As for next year, the Pats are currently sitting at $142M against the cap that is projected to be $150+M. But that INCLUDES Revis' contract number of $25M which was ALL know is going to change. So, I will be flat out honest. The Pats already have the money for Revis/McCourty put aside for new contracts. It's just a matter of when they get the details taken care off.

I really hope your thinking is right and it sounds solid ( lets get those contracts done sooner than later) as I don't want to worry about them all year:(

Agree with Kirwan, I would think the Texans would target Dobson if they were gonna try and pry a receiver from us. He's younger with a lot more upside than Amendola which fits their current situation.

Or is it just a money matching theory making Amendola the educated guess?

I'd say: Mallett+Dobson+4th = Andre Johnson+7th. Or something in that region. @Miguel thanks for the link was informative

Reportedly Johnson hungry for a Superbowl has publically reported his dismay and is planning to skip otas and all team activities.
Mallett for Johnson really this makes to much sense not to happen doesn't it?

Great idea. I would gladly trade Andy Johnson for Mallett. Kid's got some upside as a message board commentator after learning from BB and TFB. Kraft has a soft spot for old-school Patriot vets. I think we could swap them straight-up.

I could see Mallett packaged with a 5th, 6th, or 7th for Andre Johnson.

Considering Boldin was traded for a 6th, Stevie Johnson was traded for a 4th, Randy Moss for a 4th, and a talented CB like Samuel was traded for a 7th, I think Mallett + a 5th, 6th, or 7th rounder is worthy compensation for a receiver that'll be 33 by the beginning of the season.

Moreover, that'll make me feel a lot better about taking Garropolo in the 2nd. No offense to JG, because he was my favorite QB in the draft, but I wanted an impact player for Brady. Johnson would give us that, and JG would be an adequate backup and potential starter down the line.

Yeah, Amendola is the only one of the WRs that can save them any useful amount of cap room by being traded. A trade after June 1 would save the Pats $3.375M in 2014 (leaving $3.6M dead money in 2015), which would help out a lot when dealing with Johnson's incoming $11M. Trading Amendola and cutting Connolly would be enough to fit Johnson's cap hit without pushing any into future years. Anything less, and they'd have to start restructuring guys or getting straight pay cuts.

@Sticky Caulk if you disagree say why. My compensation theory was based off the fact that the projected cost is being estimated @ a single second round pick.

Mallett(if they want him at all)+ Dobson> 2nd round pick...the 4th is icing really if those reports are true.

Mallet + Amendola + 4th rd pick

for

Andre Johnson + 5th rd pick

I know its not a fair trade but its better than nothing for both teams.

Funny, that teams like, Raiders, Browns, Redskins, are very interested in Andre.
Yet, these are losers. Andre wants to play for a team that gets to the playoffs, every year.
Not too many of those teams, that are WR needy.. Save, the Patriots..

Kirwan suggests Dobson + a 3 for Johnson.
I wouldn't do that deal. Dobson flashed talent last year before his injury, trading him away for a 33 year old (albeit one who's had a great career) is madness and not how you go about building a roster to have long term success.
