Does this just make too much sense? (Andre Johnson wants out of Houston)

I'm not sure what I believe though I'm pretty sure the Texans had absolutely no need to trade for Mallet before or during the draft using 2014 picks.
This would only be surely so if the Texans knew that no other team was interested in trading for Mallett before, or during, the draft.

I am not saying the Pats would trade Mallett for Johnson straight up. They could package Mallett and pick (possibly two) for Johnson. If Mallett is worth a 2015 pick to the Texans, he is worth something in value in a package to trade Johnson if they choose to trade him.

I didnt think you were. I was just throwing it out there that I think there is as much of a chance of a post-draft trade as there was pre-draft. Im not sure why I quoted your post to make that statement.

Taken from the Boston Globe article Ian linked to, the Around the League blog on NFL.com puts a value of a 2nd round pick on Johnson.

Unless he's taking a pay cut, it's still $11M at some point. They need room on next seasons cap if they want both Revis and McCourty to stick around, so I don't think pushing $7M of that 11 (or something along those lines) into 2015 is the solution either.
Sciz - Johnson's contract runs through the 2016/2017 season. If they changed his salary to $2M and gave him a 9M signing bonus, that would put $3m in amortized bonus over the 3 years. So his cap hit would be 5M this year. Now, that would make his salary cap hits over the following 2 years 13.5M and 14M, but, they could easily cut Johnson without much dead money. And that is if they just do a normal salary to bonus change, which doesn't require Johnson's approval.

A renegotiated contract, which is what would happen, would probably drop Johnson's salary over the next 3 years from 32.5M + the 3M in roster bonuses to around 24-27M in total, in all honesty with a 8-9M signing bonus and 8-9M guaranteed.

The fact that Johnson is a 32 year old malcontent with a big contract and whom the Texans will most likely be forced to release either this season or next does not exactly enhance his trade value.

If that trade would go through wouldn't you think that Amendola would be a part of it and that would leave a Dead cap hit for His signing bonus correct? If that is the case and the new contract would have money from his signing bonus could that be fit under?
I wonder for the fact that we will need quite a bit of $ next year to sign McCourty and the most important resign in Revis Island.

Amendola could be a part of it, yes. The problem with that is the entirety of Amendola's dead money would hit this year's cap for the Patriots. That would be an additional $2.645 Million on the cap. Yes, they could still fit Johnson's contract under the cap as well by simply guaranteeing $9M of his 10M salary and treating it as a signing bonus by spreading it out over the 3 years left on the contract.

As for next year, the Pats are currently sitting at $142M against the cap that is projected to be $150+M. But that INCLUDES Revis' contract number of $25M which was ALL know is going to change. So, I will be flat out honest. The Pats already have the money for Revis/McCourty put aside for new contracts. It's just a matter of when they get the details taken care off.

If Andre wants to play for a SB contender we can name 8 teams more or less and narrow it down to 4.

It's not in the best interest of Texans trading for a future pick with NE because is more than likely that would be over the #25 spot in the draft. Not to mention they are conference rivals.

There are teams in NFC that can be labeled SB contenders and can all of a sudden have a terrible season, like the Falcons last year. Panthers and Saints are also in this mix, although I think the Saints can at least hope for a Wild Card, they are year in year out SB contenders with Drew Brees and their impressive performance in home games, but I doubt they can manage an injury bug like last year with us. I think things can turn around really fast there, not to mention their deficiency in road games.

The Panthers is a team I would say have great chances of not making the playoffs next season. Inconstant QB, lost a lot of weapons, drafted a huge boom or bust receiver, well a lot of question marks. And they play in the NFC. If BOB wants to trade for future picks makes sense. I just don't know Andre will buy, he seems to be a smart guy, I don't know who will make the call, if he has any input on this, I can see him staying in AFC.

After reading the topic in other forums, I think they can make it, it's one of those opportunities in life you act first and think later.

FWIW -Any trades that will take place after June 1st will spread the cap hits over the 2014 and 2015 seasons. That is, the 2014 signing bonus proration will remain on the 2014 cap while future signing bonus prorations (2015 and beyond) would hit the 2015 cap.

That is, just because something is not palatable now does not mean that it will not be palatable later.

Some texans fans are so pissed they want BOB to trade him for the Raiders, to pay with Schaub and little Carr. That's just like 12 years a slave, they even look similar.

Johnson can't be traded or even cut, unless he rewrites his contract effectively renouncing it completely. It is too prohibitive to both the Texans, and probably the acquiring team.

I would say that being May 14th now, the Texans are going to wait another couple of weeks before even seriously entertaining trade offers if they are ever going to seriously entertain trade offers.

If Johnson is worth a second round pick, it might only take Mallett and a fourth rounder to get the trade done. Maybe a third rounder.

You can't write off dead money.

The pressure would be on Andre Johnson to renegotiate his contract with his new team in order to facilitate a trade; BB would be saying you want to play for a contender, how badly do you want to play for us?

I think we would be able to afford him with the dead money coming off the books and it could come down to a choice after the 2014 season of AJ vs DA... I think we can do it and would like to see it happen

FWIW the Jets board is saying that they should trade Kerley for him with the Jets conditionally getting a pick lmao
You cant be serious?

Miguel - I thought that changed with the new CBA? That the entirety of the remaining signing bonus gets accelerated to the current year regardless of when the person is traded. To support this, I just looked on Overthecap.com at the Eagles page and they do not have any cap hit from Isaac Sopoaga for this year. Sopoaga was signed last year and they took the entire amount as a cap hit after he was traded to the Pats.

The 2011 CBA says:
"For any player removed from the Team's roster or whose Contract is assigned via waivers or trade after June 1, except in the Final League Year, any unamortized signing bonus amounts for future years will be included fully in Team Salary at the start of the next League Year."

So, then OvertheCap has it wrong on Sopoaga???
