The Secondary

If Collins can continue to improve in his coverage - he will take many TE's. If he needs Safety help - here comes Ryan. Ryan could also be used in a FS role - just in a smaller zone with McCourty on the field. He can provide Safety help underneath knowing deep is covered by McCourty. I don't know how it will work out or what the plans are, but Ryan is a good ball hawk - and I think that is the skill they need to exploit - considering he continues to develop. No doubt this will be one athletic D - and pretty young to boot. I am excited to see this D in action. Here's to a season of good health.

They have really good positional flexibility overall, despite the lack of depth at LB. It is going to be really interesting watching them mix and match against opposing offenses. Belichick and Patricia are going to have numerous options for taking away the best offensive player's on opposing offenses.

A thread about the secondary seems an appropriate place for this, against the Lions how would you rather see the team line up:

A) Golden Tate takes a trip to Revis island and Megatron gets Browner w/ McCourty over the top.
B) Megatron takes a trip to Revis island (possible Safety help too?) and Dennard covers Golden Tate, Browner takes one of Ebron/Pettigrew.
Definitely B. Johnson is not a good match-up for Browner. Put Revis on him and give him some safety help.

Yet another fine off-season topic with cogent replies posted before I could get there.

Normally I love to ***** & moan about off-season thread topics but Patsfans are on a pretty good roll with topics this spring so far. Of course the real post draft doldrums loom ahead.

We seem set for 2014, awaiting the contract negotiations of McCourty and Revis. We have a core of 7 plus a special teamer. That is actually a bit THIN, since Browner won't be there for 4 games.

LOCKS
CB: Revis, Dennard, Arrington, Browner
S : McCourty, Harmon, Ryan
ST: Ebner

WE WILL LIKELY CARRY 2 MORE
(and we will get another to replace Browner for the 1st four weeks)

Wilson
Chung
Thomas
Green
Davis
======================
It seems that we need a 5th corner and a S/Ster. None of these guys are safe. With a good camp, any of these could make the 53. As is always the case, a free agent could take one of these spots.

Ebner's a lock, eh?

Every time I see Chung's name I think it's a David Patten joke. I forget he's back. For now.

Trade for Eric Berry.

I don't think he is the answer as we have someone to be a Free Safety and his name is Devin McCourty and I really want to resign Revis and that wouldn't be possible to have both come back next year and we would be wanted good picks on a rental.

I think that he will be if they cut Tavon as his Special Team value would clearly outweigh what Chung could bring ( I think Chung is a waste of a roster spot)

Chung is a pretty good special teamer and offers more on defense, if called upon, than Nate Ebner.

True perhaps but, at this (expected) level down on the depth chart, I would think that ST contributions is more important. I think Ebner wins in such a case.

Chung seems to me to be this years recipient of "shadow roster" candidate.

Eric Berry is a Strong Safety, though he can play FS, too. Berry is too good of a player to just leave hanging out deep on 50% of the plays.

I wouldn't say that Ebner is a lock in any way shape or form. And I caution people to not overlook Jemea Thomas because he is such a good special teamer and is positionally versatile in the defensive backfield. He could bring serious competition to Arrington.

Personally I couldn’t care less where Browner lines up…. All I want to see is him putting a couple good licks on Welker when we play the donkeys.

But he's evil, has horns, and drowns puppies in his spare time!

I think the main place he will line up will be "not on Welker."

Have him beat up D. Thomas for a bit, the knock on both him & Decker is that they're soft and don't like being hit.

Welker is the last receiver on the Broncos that I want Browner on. He is the type that can shred Browner with his quick cuts.

Thomas looks brutal (good). It's amazing. We have a young guy who can play teams, slot, cb, safety, another who is excellent at special teams and has started for two NFL teams, yet we have to have the rugby player because he's good on special teams, so good no one in the world could replace him.

If Ryan can't play safety, then we should worry about safety for the first 4th weeks, and for the rest of the season.

I think that Belichick is more than "trying" Ryan at safety. If he cannot play safety, we need to move someone else, maybe Arrington. Or perhaps you would like Chung or Wilson as you safety splitting reps with Harmon.

I think Arrington does really need to move to safety - much for the same reasons DMac moved. Arrington does not backpeddle well and does not track the ball. Everything he has done well has been with the play of the game and the ball being in front of him. Because of his slot corner experience, he may well be an excellent strong safety - much more so than Chung or Wilson. And for the first 4 weeks, I think our top 3 CBs are Revis, Dennard and Ryan, so getting the best SS is very important.

I don't expect Ebner is a "lock" (though I personally really like him).

Also, I've little doubt (sadly) that Chung beats out Tavon.

I think the battle between Chung, Ebner, and Tavon will be interesting. I think Wilson and Ebner have the edge on Chung in terms of durability and come cheaper. They have a decent chance to show that they are equally marginally reliable in coverage and thereby keep their jobs. I don't have high hopes (couldya tell?), but given a third year, maybe they'll have figured something out.
