Does anyone know how Tom stacks up against other QBs on deep balls thrown?
I know with R.Moss he was great but what about his career vs other QB's

It doesn't seem he is one of the best at this part of the game.
If he is not so good, would that be a factor in the type of receiver
that they bring on board?

Any stats?

He's not the best. But it's not like he has had great deep threats over his career.

Between not being on the same page with his WRs, his hand injury, and the small sample size, I'm not giving up on him yet. I'd like to see what he can do with another offseason of practice with this WR group, although I am a bit worried that Dobson's foot may cost him quite a but of practice time.

Complicated topic. You can't really just look at stats. Brady, by far, is the QB who is going to avoid a pick at all costs and throw the ball where only his guy can get it. Deep passes have little room for error, so being safe with the throw will affect stats a lot.

Brady is also more likely to sail a deep ball on purpose, throwing it away if its not there instead of throwing a 'jump ball'. Many QBs complete some deep balls into tight coverage, that Brady would not throw into, but they also have a high amount of those picked.

Like many things in the NFL, hitting a 50 yard pass is not easy and surely not a 100% thing. But like a corner allowing a TD catch or a T allowing a sack, (or appropriate to the week, one draft choice that turns out badly) many fans react as if one bad one is intolerable, unacceptable and sucky.

Brady doesn't need a deep ball.

Could not care less about Brady's deep pass. Average among decent QBs.

What I DO care about is his ability to throw cross field with velocity which has been a trademark, and his accuracy along the sideline which could use work. The sideline pass opportunity occurs > 10x the deep pass given the targets on this team.

I did the following last year, so you'd have to look up 2013 stats....

From Espn, I looked up "Passes Thrown" -- which is essentially an air yards stat that ignored YAC -- and I then combined the 31-40 yard throws and 41+ yards throws:

I think it's interesting that Brady's passer rating on passes thrown 31+ yards in the air is higher than Flacco's was last season (75.7 for Brady, 60.6 for Flacco)...and yet Flacco is considered to be one of the best deep throwers in the game...

w/o Boldin as a serious underneath and sideline threat, teams played Flacco deep. He also got less cheap PI calls in 2013.

It takes 2 players to make the play, that should not count only on the QB.

Brady is playing with Jags for his entire career basically.

Also, I would "trade" a deep pass ability for many of his other qualities, if I could assemble a QB.

Brady doesn't need a deep ball.

Why? Doesn't it make the rest of his game more difficult? I mean if a D isn't too worried about
the deep part of the field can't they play their D closer to the line?

Brady tends to put a bit more air under his deep balls than a lot of us would like, but my sense is that minimizing risk is really part and parcel of his style and the way he's been coached. More than anything, the low INT rates have really been the guy's hallmark. Paraphrasing BB, who ever heard of a game being lost on an incomplete pass?

TB trails only Aaron Rodgers (whose sample size is obviously much smaller) in career pass interception percentage:
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_int_perc_career.htm

And of course, who can forget TD to INT ratios of 50:8 in 2007 and 36:4 in 2010.

Flacco is the best deep ball thrower of the 2012 NFL Playoffs

Yes but most QBs are only averaging 26 passes over 31 yards per season. That means their other 400-500 passes are less than 31 yards. I doubt defenses take deep balls into consideration too much on a play-by-play basis.

For me, the deep pass is as good as the wr you are throwing to. Moss knew how to adjust, last year I could see Dobson slowing down when he should have been speeding up for instance.
