ACL Surgery

My knees hurt after watching that.

I currently have a ruptured ACL and some meniscus damage. Slated for surgery sometime over summer. Doesn't really hurt oddly enough.

different surgery, but similar concepts. i am not a squeamish person normally...but this video just did not sit well with me at all.

BtB is fantastic. Re-injury is not likely - 10-15% - and there's typically no slowdown. Today's Tommy John surgery. Anyone watched John Lackey lately.

Had the surgery. My leg is extremely strong 2 years later. Frank Gore had 2 torn ACL's coming out of college. Pretty good longevity.

One study showed that athletes with previous ACL injuries were 4x as likely to have another injury of the knee (if I'm reading it correctly). However, the study was done on Swedish footballers and who knows maybe these guys simply have a genetic pre-disposition to knee injuries. :)
High risk of new knee injury in elite footballers with previous anterior cruciate ligament injury

Here is an interesting article about a couple players with multiple ACL tears.
Good news for RGIII? Three players who came back from two ACL tears

And all that said, I have it on good authority that James Caan returned to full contact acting after suffering an injury to both legs.

A soccer player over here tore his ACL a few months ago and Sky Sports News were getting in experts and everything to explain what it is etc, this German Doctor they had on said in the past they used to just mend the ACL and didn't know why it took so long to rehab & for players to get back to where they were pre-injury, turns out there's something else in the knee that usually tears along with the ACL they used to miss and not surgically repair.

Finding this other damage that was previously unknown + medical advances is why the injury isn't as serious as it used to be.

I wouldn't be too surprised if within the next 5 years ACL tears are no longer season ending injuries.

I just wish they had better knee protection. I know the kneepad inserts in the uniforms are pretty worthless, and most players don't even put them in to make them faster. Hell when I played, I inserted them, AND wore an extra pair of knee pads under the pant leg. Just wish they had something really strong for the knee.

Tearing of the ACL usually occurs with twisting of the knee that severs the tendon. Usually your leg being planted as your knee twists. Padding does not help, anything else like the braces they give you after surgery are very cumbersome. But the procedure is day surgery. Very painful. Severe rehab. They strengthen your quad. Once done with rehab, it takes 8-12 months to trust it. Mostly mental. After that feels like new

The Swedish study cites (fn 18) to a study of American footballers that shows that a previous ACL injury is the leading risk factor to tearing an ACL. That would be the study to look at, although it is not perfect since it deals with data from pre-2000 and advancements have been made since then.

The date is really important because ACL surgery seems to have improved a lot as ACL injuries has gone from a very serious injury to something that you some times can come back from the year after and play as well as ever.

ACLs are because from youth sports onward, football is becoming a year-round sport. Just like the increase of Tommy John surgeries, bodies are getting worn down and our body can't handle the sudden increase of more muscle and harder training.

I really recommend for kids to play multiple sports so they use different muscles and don't get burnt out.
