Why is everyone assuming 3 QBs? I say cut/trade Mallet

I still want to know who agrees with me on Garopollo ... mysterious turf toe IR for 2014/2015.

I don't see how it can be any other way besides a different phantom injury of course.
Why would Garopollo go along with such a thing? He's a professional, and no doubt he wants to develop as much as he can. Obviously he's not exactly competing for a starting job, but I bet he sure wants to be the #1 backup and, at the very worst, spend the year doing as much as he can to learn and practice.

Why extremely low?
Because the salary he would get and the playing time he would have would merit a low compensatory pick.
Have you seen some of these backup QB contracts?
Yes I have. The overwhelming majority of the time, they're low dollar amounts.
Dan Orlovsky was making $3 million a year as a #3 and he played all years of that contract.
That contract is widely seen as having been a horrible signing by the Texans. To take an outlier seen as a horrible decision and presume Mallett can do just as well is silly.
Does anyone doubt that Mallet can grab a $4m a year contract on the open market?
I know I sure do.

Mixed metaphors notwithstanding, throwing young quarterbacks into the fire is the opposite of the way BB has developed Cassell, Hoyer and Mallet.

Considering he's managed to take 7th rounders and UDFA and turn them into NFL quarterbacks, while other teams have turned number one picks into Don Knotts, I think I'd go along with having the backups learn and compete.

Don't forget he did the same with Tom Brady. He had him sit for a year and even carried 4 QBs to do so. Going back further he spent time re-grooming Testaverde before benching Kosar. Injury prevented him from having to do the same to Bledsoe.

Grow Up.

The obvious answer is not yes, it is NO! As a SB contender, BB has said publically that Mallett is not For Sale.
When did he say that? I know we've all seen countless rumors and mediot speculation, but I don't recall seeing an official, public statement from the team or Belichick himself.
The 2015 season may be different. Grapollo, after a year of training may take his place as a backup QB. Judging by the way BB handled Bernie Kosar, and prepped Brady in 2000, he may even sit TFB down in 2015, or more likely start to have him platoon.
Really? Bench the greatest QB of all time in 2015 in favor of Garopollo?

What is it about the Patriots backup QB's that make people in this forum completely lose their minds??!?

I may be wrong here, but didn't the Patriots only carry 2 QBs with Hoyer as a rookie?

True. He beat out four other quarterbacks, including former third-round pick Kevin O'Connell.

But they also carried four quarterbacks in 2000.

I also don't think that this a great comparison though. Hoyer was a long-shot to be the long-term answer at quarterback. So they weren't as afraid of him failing as I believe they would be for Garapollo to fail. Because if he were to fail this year it wouldn't only affect 2014-2015. It could have him ruin his confidence altogether.

If there is an epidemic in the NFL right now. It's teams rushing young quarterbacks along and starting them when they aren't ready. Then giving up on him a year or two into development.

If they think he is as ready as Hoyer was, then there is precedent.

The Michael Bishop threads were downright painful over here ... this will be worse.

They will start in the game thread then they will permeate throughout the forum out from every rock, crevice and floor board like rancid ravaging c'ockroaches - devouring every rational point of view with smothering festering vexation.

what makes you so sure they won't sign mallet to a deal and trade brady.............?

See what I mean ..........

No no.... my favorite is they will keep Brady as the starter, but franchise Mallett after 2014.

(Yes I am serious, someone in this forum actually suggested that as a possibility)

Maybe we get lucky and Mallett lights it up in preseason....Hey its possible....Maybe...
I suspect that Mallett will get very few reps. Polo needs the reps; not Mallet.

This seems pretty simple. Mallet does not have what it takes or BB would be restructuring his contract. He is below average from pre-season games. Can't even hit on a short or intermediate pass with any consistency. Gets sacked more often than not, because he is not a quick enough thinker. Think again, If we think we are going to let him play to his strengths all the time which is the deep ball. They will pin their ears back on him and not give him enough time to do that. He plays through training camp. Giving Jimmy G and himself most of the reps, preserving Brady. At the end of camp he goes one way or another. Jimmy G will not be IR'd, he needs the practice time. We went with 2 QB's with Hoyer and Mallet as rookies, we will do the same with Jimmy G. If JG does not have what it takes in a year or so, we will draft another and do this all over again. As BB said. Better to be earlier than later on this. He has 3-4 years to find Brady's successor.

Yep, people better get ready for more second round QBs.

A rookie is a rookie. Maybe Garopplo is 1 in ten that is mature enough and has figured out the speed of the game is faster than in college, yada, yada, yada. Otherwise having a vet back-up is important if Brady goes down.

If BB does not see security in the film room from JG pretty quickly. Then keeping Mallet around for the year as a vet is worth more than a low round pick. BB values that extra player slot for a valuable special teams/position type player, but By doing so we would get a compensatory pick. Will be interesting.

Let's not put Garoppolo in Canton just yet. . . .
You took the words right out of my mouth - kind of. I was thinking ala Bill Parcells " Lets not go backing up the moving van for Canton just yet" .

The guy hasn't even taken a pro snap yet and people want all kinds of moves made that could have a serious impact on the team.

The draft has been over for a couple of days and I would have thought many of us would have learned not to speculate on what is going to happen.

I think they are going to cut Mallett. However, I absolutely agree there is a possibility they keep him and go with 3 QB's.

However, if they keep Mallett, it will be because he is needed in the role of backup QB. The Patriots are not going to waste a valuable roster spot on someone just so they can pick up a 6th round compensatory pick in the 2016 draft.

Look, I do not think anybody is saying that Garoppolo is a lock to knock Mallet off the roster, however, that outcome is an ideal outcome and it is certainly a possibility based on moves Belichick has made in the past.

I have never been impressed by Mallet, so maybe my feelings about how easy it should be for Garoppolo to show enough are skewed. Anyhow, it will be an interesting battle during TC and I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
