It Is What It Is >> Patriots select Florida State center Bryan Stork with 105th overall pick

The Patriots selected Florida State center Bryan Stork with the 105th overall pick in the NFL draft on Saturday.

The first pick of the fourth round for New England, the 6-foot-4, 315-pounder. In 2013, he started all 13 games played at center for the national champions and won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center. He’s struggled with injury over the course of his college career with knee and shoulder issues.

Stork, who has some positional versatility as an interior offensive lineman, figures to sit behind center Ryan Wendell and guards Dan Connolly and Logan Mankins when it comes to playing time.

It Is What It Is >> 3 early thoughts on Patriots' selection of FSU center Bryan Stork

1. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Stork certainly has an impressive resume. This past season, he started all 13 games played at center for the national champions and won the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center. He does apparently have some positional versatility, which means he could show up as a backup to either Dan Connolly or Logan Mankins. (He played some left guard while at FSU.) But for now, he’ll likely serve as the primary backup for starter Ryan Wendell.

2. Like first-round pick Dominique Easley, there are some injury issues. He did not compete at the combine because of left knee and shoulder issues, and had toe issues at the start of the 2013 season. In addition, in 2011, he missed games against Boston College and did not start against Miami because of migraines, then suffered a finger injury against Florida which became infected and nearly required amputation. That being said, he did start 26 games the last two years, and so there’s something to be said for battling through injuries.

3. It remains to be seen — injuries and other personnel decisions always play a role when it comes to roster-building. But at least on the surface, like Easley and Jimmy Garoppolo, this pick appears to be a developmental acquisition with an eye toward a year or two down the road.

FSU OL Bryan Stork drafted by New England Patriots in fourth round, plans to trim beard - Orlando Sentinel

FSU center Bryan Stork will be snapping the ball to one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

Stork was selected by the New England Patriots with the 105th pick in the fourth round of theNFL Draft. If Stork stays at center in the NFL, he will be lining up with quarterback Tom Bradydirectly behind him.

“I’m very excited,” Stork said. “It’s definitely a team I always wanted and I look forward to being part of the team and helping win games.”

Stork (6-4, 300) was a three-year starter at FSU and played several positions, although he settled in at center for the later part of his career. The leader of FSU’s offensive line, Stork played an underrated role in helping redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston get acclimated to the college game in his first year as a starter.

He had 40 career starts and is capable of playing a variety of positions across the line in the NFL.

Stork developed a reputation for being a gruff and gritty player, fighting through a litany of injuries while at FSU. He had knee and shoulder issues at the NFL Scouting Combine and almost had to amputate an injured finger several seasons ago.

“It was a few years ago. It’s done with now,” Stork said. “I’m healthy so we don’t need to talk about it anymore.”

Stork also became a fan favorite because of his vibrant and unkempt red beard, which became more untamed as his senior season progressed. He still has the beard, but that may change by the time he reports to camp.

“I will probably trim it up,” Stork said. “I’ve got a job now so I’ve got to be professional.”

Well done Patriots! Ryan Wendell had a terrible season last year as shown in the Broncos game and the Pats get last years Remington winner in the 4th round pick. His excellent work ethics will be well liked by Pats fans and it won't take long before his starting. Really think he can become a top notch center for a long time and that is something TB will surely enjoy.

If anybody wants to hear a fun conference call, go listen to the media questioning our new Center after he was drafted. I LOVE THIS GUY! He came across as someone who just wants to play football and has no time for silly questions.

Some of the great excerpts:

When asked about a prior shoulder and knee injury: "Yeah, I’m fine. It’s not a big deal. I’m a ball player."

On competing for a starting job: "I just want to come in and compete for a job and go to work. That’s all I’m worried about. Not going to predict that I start, I just want to play ball."

On preferring guard or center: "It doesn’t matter. I’m just here to play ball. That’s all it is."

On the 'situation' where he injured a finger and almost had it amputated: "It was a few years ago. It’s done with now. I’m healthy so we don’t need to talk about it anymore." (sounded just like a Belichick response)

And my favorite... when asked if he was familiar with Mankins and the rest of the O-line: "Yes, I’ve heard of them." (followed by awkward silence)

Stork appears to be a no-nonsense guy with a bit of a mean streak.

My favorite pick is a CENTER!

Gronk: Stork eat SeaBass.....yummmmm

The Stork's toe is big concern considering he will be playing on Gillette's unforgiving turf. Hopefully he can sit out a year and recover.

This is one of two picks that I like, makes sense and should most likely be the starting center next year. the rest of the draft is putrid.

I really like this guy and hope, in fact, that he can start within the season.. probably in the 2nd half.

This guy is Logan Mankins part 2. His attitude and the way he talks, makes him a perfect fit.

Once again, I believe in The Stork!

Hold on a second. We're talking about a redshirt senior who started 40 games for Florida State. A guy who won the Rimington Trophy as the top center in college football. A guy who projects to the exact same position with the Patriots -- as it happens, the position with the weakest incumbent starter on the whole roster.

And from this they conclude that he's a long-term developmental prospect? o_O

Wow, tough audience. What would it take for a player to actually look like he's ready for the NFL?

don't get the talk that he'll be behind Wendell. Have the people that said that seen Wendell.

I can't stand Chris Price.

C and DT two of the weakest positions last year and he's considering them one-two year developmental players.

If Stork outplays Wendell in training camp he will be the C and Wendell will be a Free Agent. Same thing with Easley if he outplays every other DT in camp Bill will play him.

Who was the last developmental 1st round pick? Meriweather?

Dont'a Hightower- 13 GS (14 GP)
Chandler Jones- 13 GS (14 GP) (I believe both missed sometime due to injury that year)
Nate Solder- 13 GS (15 GP)
Devin McCourty- 16 GS
Jerod Mayo- 16 GS
Brandon Meriweather- 0 GS (16 GP)
Laurence Maroney- 0 GS (14 GP)
Logan Mankins- 16 GS
Vince Wilfork- 6 GS (16 GP)
Ben Watson- 1 GS (1 GP)
Ty Warren- 4 GS (16 GP)
Daniel Graham- 6 GS (12 GP)
Richard Seymour- 10 GS (13 GP)

The pick of a center made plenty of sense to me when it happened. Stork seems to fit the bill as the Rimington Award winner as Best College Center in Football. He clearly has a no nonsense attitude and is said to be a leader. The position versatility is a definite plus..

If he was competing with a Wendell-caliber player at any other position on the OL, I would agree. But I feel like center requires a different level of familiarity with the QB, and I don't see a 4th round rookie beating out a guy who has multiple years of experience working with Brady, no matter how susceptible he might be. By later in the season though, I can definitely see Stork ahead of Wendell.

Connolly came in after Koppens injury and did a great job. Agreed he'd been with the team some time and understood the setup at the time though.

Versatility is the quickest way to roster longevity and Connolly has a lot of it.

Hell, I bet he's probably their third-string kick returner. :D

Didn't koppen start his rookie year?

Wanted a center that stops a bull rush, we got one.
