Near the end of the press conference Reiss asks BB about the need to have a solid backup QB and BB responds, "I don't think we'd put together a team the way Indianapolis did it, then they lose Manning and go 1-15. That's not what we're looking for. In 2008 when we lost Tom, we had a player who could step in and we won 11 games. We want to be competitive even if something happens to a player at any position. I don't think we'd be happy going 1-15 if we had an injury at one position. Other people have different philosophies."

Great to hear him say that. No "suck for Luck"-type thinking in New England.

Yeah, I read that with a lot of pride. Coach is going to remain competitive no matter what. He's said so time and again with his comments about "his job is to do what is best for the team."

As much as he loves any particular player, when that player can no longer contribute at a level coach is comfortable with, then he'll be gone. It isn't personal, just business. It's a cold, hard business sometimes, but in the end, it's still a business.

wow, I'm actually surprised he said that.

Shows his respect for the Colts, especially before the current administration.

And he brought up the Colts without being asked. Clearly, he has contempt for the way they trashed their season when Manning went down.

I think the Colts got it exactly right, Manning #1 pick, decade of excellence. Suck for a year a get Luck, keep him for a decade. What is the difference between 1-15 and 8-8 ? The difference is most teams get stuck at 8-8 for years, but the team that gets a Luck type QB can instantly rebound.

I know BB has a job to do and is hell bent on his approach but as a fan I don't have a realistic expectation that the Patriots will be a championship caliber team once Brady retires.

No, the Colts got it exactly wrong and lucked out (no pun intended). Luck just as well could've been the second coming of Ryan Leaf. You build your team to compete no matter what. You tell me the difference between 1-15 and 8-8. As a season ticket holder, I'd go with 8-8 given the choice. ;)

"Suck for Luck" is definitely the way to go, in a league without a lottery.

shows his dislike for polian is more like it :)

Polian constantly takes digs at the Patriots on ESPN. Knowing how upset he still is about the Patriots owning the Colts fairly(despite his denial) he'll be bothered by those comments for sure. :D

Stop. Just stop.

They didn't "get it right". They were lucky the timing worked out. Not any of their own doing. So they didn't "get it right". Another year and they might've been stuck with Jamarcus Russell or Vince Young as their QB.

So, you'd be happy to watch the Patriots tank it if Brady went down?

You don't "Suck for JaMarcus".

I didn't like the Colts throwing the season but it's worked out well for them and it's going to work out well for them in the future.

We are in agreement Tunescribe but guys like Tom Brady and Russell Wilson are the exception not the norm.

hahaha, yeah, ok. I meant DISRESPECT for the colts before the current admin,

man too many Bruins playoff games, can't type or think!

I'm not sure what happy has to do with it. If Brady went down, and Andrew Luck was the prize for going in the tank, I'd be all for it. If Brady went down, and Sam Bradford was the prize for going in the tank, I'd be against it.

It's about long-term strategy at that point.

Colts didn't really have a choice that year. They sucked because.... they sucked.

The OP specified "Suck for Luck", as did the post I initially responded to. 2008 was nice because it was too early to worry about Brady's successor (despite the "Trade Brady" thread), but it would have sucked if that had been 2011.

In the big 4 of U.S. sports, the worst places you can finish are just outside the playoffs (non-lottery) and the weakest of the playoff teams (lottery).
