Agreed the draft is a crapshoot. But, last year we got handled in the AFCCG pretty easily and then Denver got killed in the SB. That tells me we have areas of need. Backup QB in my opinion, was way down the list.

The answer is right there but you are missing it. Maybe the coaching staff thinks its more important than you do for a reason.

Obviously BB and I have a difference of opinion on this. But if that disqualifies me from posting then this board is going to become really quiet and boring!
In my first post I said I am a "in BB I trust" guy. But I would have preferred to use the 2 rounder on someone who may actually going to play on the field during a game while TB is doing so as well.

I think the problem comes when you develop the potential successor at the expense of current team.

The chances that JG will lead the team to a SB victory are very slim, TFB has done it multiple times. If that pick was used to beef up the O-line Brady would be less likely to be injured and have a longer career, we'd also have a better chance of winning the SB.

Teams go through hell to get a franchise QB because they're so rare, when you have one it makes sense to protect the hell out of him and give him lots of weapons to throw to.

You're right, we won't have the ability to get an Andrew Luck-type prospect with Brady as QB, that's why you wait till he's done, let the chips fall where they may, and if that means a few seasons as the worst team in the league so be it, take your medicine and come back stronger.

The end goal of this current strategy is sustained mediocrity.

People are acting like this guy didn't have any pedigree going into the draft. Most "experts" had him as a 2nd/3rd round guy. He went end of the 2nd round. Simply put, I don't think there was a player available at 62 that would have stepped in and become a starter. That being said, there are few positions on the team where the Pats have less depth than at the QB positon. You have a 37 year old player who saw his numbers decline last year and a backup QB who will walk at the end of the year. Show me a position where the Pats have less depth, both long term and short term, than the QB positon. Your commenting as if Brady is 30 years old and in his prime. Just simply not the case here.

I take from this that the Pats have decided that Mallett is not "the guy," but with Belichick, you "never know." Maybe he's just trying to light a fire under him, though that seems an unlikely use of a second rounder.

Only in the sense that Mallett is unlikely to be the one to take over for Brady; I don't think this is Brady's final year as a starter.

I didn't mean to imply that you shouldn't have an opinion. I am in the same boat as you as far as wanting someone having an immediate impact. However, drafting this guy as high as they did and Belichick last night talking about Brady's age tells me that they don't have as much confidence in Brady lasting the next two years as we maybe do. This wasn't the same as Mallett who I think they drafted as a back up. They may see the window with the current team as the next few years and want to have a suitable back up to Brady so they can have a real shot with or without him.

BB the GM hates BB the HC.

Of all the needs and he does this.
Don't think their needs are as great as you seem to think. Interesting pick. They obviously wanted Garoppolo to take him where they did. Seems like a terrific athlete with major upside between the ears. They can put him on ice for this season (like they did with Brady his first year) and let Mallett be the primary backup as JG soaks up the NFL experience. The big mistake we make is thinking Tom Brady will age gracefully and without injury. Seems to me this is a good time to draft the guy you want to develop for 3 years down the road. This is a QB driven league. I see this pick as a down payment on the not too distant future.

Can you tell me with a straight face that we stand a good chance of beating the Seahawks if we played them today?
I think we could slow them down in a defensive contest. But the offense, as it is currently constructed, would have a massive uphill challenge putting points on the board. If Gronk was available, maybe. But you can never count on that anymore. Too bad the TE pool, outside of Colt Lyerla (who should be in a straight jacket), is wiped out.

Not sure if this has been posted here or not - but take a look at Garropolo's recruiting page coming out of HS. Rivals.com had him as a 2 star (out of 5) and listed as a 'dual threat' QB.
He was recruited by: Eastern Illniois, Indiana, Illinois St, Iowa, Montana State, Northern Illinois, Purdue. He received 3 scholarship offers according to this: Eastern Illinois, Illinois St., Montana St.

sorry Brady, you get no more help.
Could you be a bit more dramatic??
The Patriots are not done with this draft and they're not done signing free agents.
How about we wait until we see who they draft/sign before shedding tears for poor Tommy.

Since we drafted an italian....

An Italian Honeymoon.

After returning from his honeymoon with his bride Virgina, Luigi stopped by his old barbershop in Jersey to say hello to his friends.

Giovanni said, "Hey Luigi, how wasa da treep down to Florida?"

Luigi, "Everyting wasa perfecto except for da train ride down."

"Whata you mean, Luigi?" asked Giovanni.

"Well, we boarda da train at Grana Central Station. My beautiful Virginia , she packa big basket a food. ....She brought da vino, some nice cigars for me, and we were lookina forward to da trip, and open upa da l uncha basket. The conductore come aby, waga his finger at us anda say, 'No eat indisa car. Musta use a dining car.' So, me and my beautiful Virginia, we go to da dining car, eat a biga lunch and starta at open da bottle of a nice a vino!

Conductore walka by again, waga his finger and say, 'No drinka in disa car! Musta use a cluba car.' So, we go to cluba car. While a drinkina da vino, I starta to lighta my biga cigar. The conductore, he waga 'is finger again and say, 'No a smokina disa car. Musta go to a smokina car ..'

So we go to a smokina car and I smoke a my biga cigar. Then my beautiful Virginia and I, we go to our sleeper car anda go to bed. We just about to go boombada boombada .... and the conductore, he walka through da hallway shouting at a top of his a voice..

'Nofolk Virginia ! Nofolk Virginia!'

"Nexta time, I'ma just gonna taka da bus...."

They have a darn good shot. Think about it - they almost beat Seattle a few years ago and that great defense of theirs IN SEATTLE. Granted we had Ahern back then, but still....now we have revis, browner, easley, collins, tommy kelly, etc. They are a different team too - Russell Wilson is clearly more confident now than he was as a rookie. I believe we would not get blown out against Seattle like the broncos did.

I wouldn't be surprised if they draft another QB next year, especially if Garap doesn't progress the way they want. Finding a QB to take over for Brady is requirement number 1.

I do not know who people think the Patriots would have drafted in the second round that would be able to actually get on the field to help Brady.

I think we do. Seattle lost some good players during the off season.

He's going to be playing with a chip. 2nd round pick is still pretty high but he's used to being snubbed and overlooked. I don't think JG will be taking his position on the team for granted.

Against my better judgment, I labored through this entire thread. This was easily the most insightful and most enjoyable post. Thanks!

No. What is stupid is you not thinking beyond the end of your nose. Mallett is gone after this season since his contract is up. In the mean time, you give Garropolo a year to watch and learn behind Mallet and Brady and then take over next season. That way the Pats have a back-up behind Mallet in the off-chance that Brady gets hurt.

Have you paid attention to free agency at all? The Patriots added Brandon Lafell to the offense. That is just one piece. But they also have Dobson, Thompkins, Boyce, Edelman and Amendola there. Not to mention Gronkowski. They are likely to add another TE, but no TE would have had an immediate impact, regardless of who they chose.

BTW, there are still 6 more picks for the Pats. But, you can always go root for the Jets if you really feel that strongly about the Pats and their 5 time SB winning Coach..

You clearly aren't rooting for a SB for this team. I am. So, have fun looking at the future every single year, but you have no clue about understanding the weaknesses and the holes on a football team based off of your spin on this pick and the words from this post.

How did this work out with Mallet? What did they get out of wasting that pick? Absolutely nothing. This team is very close right now, and they're drafting nothing but project players. Only an buffoon would draft a ton of project players and future players when they have a HOF QB that has only between 1-3 years left potentially. I have no idea why Brady hasn't ripped Bellicheck a new one the last two off seasons.

Same thing I've repeated for years on this site which is that Bellicheck is a great coach, but one of the worst GM's in the league. He stockpiles picks and then makes all these high risk picks that don't' amount to a whole lot. Brady makes the team over achieve with his leadership and preparation.

The Broncos have schooled the Patriots on building a team since Manning got there. Stole two of their best players on offense and defense and have done everything to help Manning get another ring and to break BRady's records. Elway trumps Bellicheck as a GM and it's sad at this point. Brady had Manning wipped as far as being the greatest QB of all time, but when it's all said and done people might be saying different things in a few years if the Broncos win a SB and then Pats don't. The reason will be the difference in the management of both teams. One team does everything possible to build a SB, the other team just constantly builds on a future.

And you think Lefell was effectively addressing the WR situation? Lol! Go back and watch the last few years of football man. He is another average free agent WR that Bellicheck threw in there like Amendola, Johnson, and Lloyd whom you probably said the same stuff for the last few years.

Pats just took Stork at the fourth round....All you guys *****ing for interior O line help, there you go!
