Pats draft QB Jimmy Garropolo from Eastern Illinois in the 2nd round

That's a ridiculous post since film on a prospect is readily available all over the internet. Otherwise, nobody would be able to make a sound analysis one way or another on small school prospects. Meanwhile, the Pats still have needs at TE, WR, interior OL, and safety and just threw a 2nd at a guy that's probably not the QB of the future.
I didn't like the pick either, but to state that if anyone disagrees they don't know college football is asinine. To then follow that up by saying that youtube highlights are enough to properly analyze a draft pick enters the realm of hypocrisy. You're usually a much better poster than this.

I was expecting BB to draft a QB this year. However, I thought he would take a flier on a project later in the draft. To early to tell if this is Brady's successor but BB wouldn't spend a 2nd round pick if he didn't think he could become starter.

ACL surgery & rehab is light years ahead of where it was just a few years ago.....
Correct. Brandon Thomas, Clemson OL, tore his ACL several weeks ago while working out with the Saints. He was a projected round 2-4 generally before the injury. Last night the 49ers made him their 3rd round pick. ACLs just aren't that concerning anymore. Sure, they can take time, but they don't end careers anymore.

FWIW - On June 2, 2015 Tom Brady's cap hits get to the point where he is tradeable. Right now, his 2015 cap hit is 13m, his 2016 cap hit is 14M for a total of $27M. If traded on 6/2/2015 his 2015 cap hit goes to 7M and his 2016 cap goes to 12M for a total of 19M (a savings of 8M). The Pats would also save 15M on the 2017 cap.

Not suggesting that it is the plan. Just providing information.

and the kid has already proven to be a rehab beast, coming back from the 1st surgery in good time and playing at a high level when he did.....it was unfortunate the 2nd went, but assuming his rehab went equally well (and considering how his stock rose late, it did), there is no real increased chance that he blows an ACL again

knees are a crapshoot in the NFL......with modern procedures and rehab, your chances of blowing the same ACL again really aren't any higher than if you have "healthy" knees to begin with

Never heard of this guy and kinda disappointed BB didn't address an immediate need. This guy sounds like he should've been part of the Brady 6.

I'd much rather be more competitive with Brady than maybe competitive afterwards. Elway is the one doing it right, he knows that franchise QBs don't come along often, the smart thing to do it maximize your potential with them than to hope and pray you just get another.

And Elway's Broncos lost the SB 43-8. I'm not interesting in copying their model.

We have a backup QB in Ryan Mallett for 2014, and Hoyer and Cassel are both UFAs after this season so we could have signed one of them to bridge the gap in 2015. You can sit here and argue the pick being a good pick all you want but suggesting it filled an essential need and had to happen is not logical.

Mallet is gone after this year. I'm perfectly fine with JG being third string, and moving up to second next year.

I dont know the guy at all. Dont know much about his game or what he can do well.

But I'll tell you one thing. He looks like a well built quarterback, he also looks like he is planning on becomming Clark Kent for the new Superman movie.

So you mean like Mallet?ar

He was supposed to be the next somebody. Whats wrong with giving the proven HOF QB that you already have all he needs to win in the playoffs?

There are different reasons why you draft a QB. You could draft one to be a backup or you could draft one to be the immediate starter, or you could draft one to be the heir replacement down the road. Pats drafted mallett as a good backup with potential to be a starter who can be used in a trade. Now the pats are getting ready to unload him to Houston after using him as a backup the past couple of seasons. They know mallett is gone after this year and need another QB to backup Brady - why not get the best QB they can possibly get in the draft? They wanted bortles, he wasn't there, so they went with the second best QB available in garappolo. Garrappolo has way more upside the mallett does any way.

Belichick said Garrappolo was drafted to replace Brady when his contract his up. If the coaching staff feels this kid is legitimate and will be a great player someday, you take him. Mallett's situation was different - he was never going to be the starter here. there was no way you draft him and let him sit on the bench for 7 years.

A brilliant pick by the 49ers in my opinion.

it's possibly a waste if they go into camp with both mallett & garopollo

if this frees them to trade mallett and make more moves with those picks, it is far from a waste

all this "reach" "waste" "risk" nonsense is knee jerk ********

have mistakes been made in the draft? yep.....happens more often than not in the draft......but until the draft is complete.....give it a rest

until we see how these players shake out....give it a rest

if you want to ***** about chad jackson, go for it......but this whining here and now is just blowhard nonsense

So you use a second round pick so you can get a fourth round pick by trading the back up QB you took in the third round?

Yeah, that makes sense to me now, NOT

Spin this however you want, it is an absolute waste! He might as well redrafted Chad Jackson

I am fine with that too, as I have said I like JG, I just would have rather had Marcus Martin, CJF, Scott Crichton, Kareem Martin, or another player that could have helped us win in 2014.

Honestly I just do not like to think about life without Tom Brady so that is why this pick bothers me...:(

Again - you must have forgotten that 2008 season. We failed to make the playoffs with that 7th round draft pick at QB. On top of that, that backup QB has failed to move into the upper echelon of NFL QBs since.

I blame Pioli for hanging him out to dry with his monumental screwup at HC.

I'm gonna say this. The Pats, in this draft DID address their 2 biggest needs. They got younger at the 2 positions in the depth chart that they were oldest at.

After they beat our ass due to their superior talent level.

What kept us out of the SB last year though?

Tight end play
Wide receiver play
Offensive center play
Right guard play
Secondary play

I did those in no particular order, but we need to address those issues, particularly the offensive line. We play 8 games a year against the Jets, Dolphins, and Bills who have Wilkerson/Richardson, Williams/Dareus, and Starks/Odrick.
