As I have said before I like the player, but I dislike the pick, I just do not see how it makes sense to draft Brady’s heir apparent this year unless they feel Brady is going to retire prior to the end of his current contract.

JG is going to sign a 4-year contract; this puts him in UFA during the 2017-18 offseason, Brady has 4-years remaining on his current deal and is slated to retire (or enter UFA) during the 2017-18 offseason. This could become another Ryan Mallett situation.

2015’s draft was the year to look for Brady’s replacement unless they think that Brady will retire if they win the Super Bowl this season.

Actually has a quick release, but not a strong arm. If you're looking for 60 yard bombs, you're gonna see a lot of under throws.

I've been seeing those throws for a long time now from Brady.

The real truth is that nobody here has a clue how Garappolo will turn out. Obviously the Pats brass likes him. That's good enough for some of us.

Who said he's the heir apparent to Brady though? I mean he very well could be, but to me, as of now, he looks more like Mallet replacement than Brady's.

How many here were predicting that Brady would supplant Bledsoe?

If he is Mallett’s replacement then we invested too much in a backup QB, we would have been fine with Fales, Matthews, or Wenning in the later rounds.

We don't know if he's the heir apparent, but do know this kid can throw the ball. His numbers are stunning, and with his size, the Patriots now have two big kids competing for the back-up role for at least one year. That is not a bad situation if Brady gets injured, or if he calls it quits this year.

When the Patriots started looking at a lot of QBs in April, I thought this was the year they might stock up and keep 3 QBs. If Tebow had panned out, they would have kept three last season.

It might be the case that Garoppolo could have been available in a later round, but we don't know that another team had him in their sights before the Patriots picked again.

As I've said many times before, if the next aaron rodgers is sitting there you have to take him. Not saying garappollo is gong to be a future star, but if your scouting department feels that way then you pull the trigger and worry about where he fits in and the team's current needs later. Better us to get the next aaron rodgers then denver.

I do not think Garoppolo would have lasted past #65 to Houston, and as I have said before I like Garoppolo I think he is a very good player with a ton of upside, I just dislike the pick by the Patriots because I would have rather addressed a need at OC, TE, or SAF.

How do you remedy your injury concerns as a team? Draft a guy with two bad knees in the first round.

Major weaknesses:
Center - see Denver game when Knighton abused Wendell.
TE - nobody behind our injury riddled starter.
WR - See last season
Safety - please.

In BB we trust.

Say it with me.

So you mean like Mallet?

He was supposed to be the next somebody. Whats wrong with giving the proven HOF QB that you already have all he needs to win in the playoffs?

We drafted Mallet in the third round.

If he was the number one player on the Pats board, and they really see potential in him, why not pick him? Rodgers was drafted in the first, backed up Favre for 3 years.

Mallet is gone after this year. We need to be ready for that. In case something happens to Brady, I'd rather the team have a second round pick they they developed/are developing then having a journeyman backup like a Charlie Batch.

Garropalo gets a new contract in 2017 with the money freed up from Brady retiring.
Makes sense, best case is he never plays a down and the Pats win 3 more Superbowls with Brady.

Just me I would rather have a player that contributes immediately, the search for the next QB can start later.

We should all come to grips that we are probably never gonna see a QB like Brady come thru Foxboro in our lifetime. But I'd rather be like the 49ers in the 90's or current day Packers, and have a plan in place, then be the Dolphins or Bills that still haven't found a proper replacement for Marino and Kelly.

BB is making the Patriots the most successful franchise in the history of the NFL. Based on his win and loss record and World Championships, anyone want to disagree with that? Given a choice between the draft opinions of every member on this board and the draft gurus versus BB. I think I take Bill's choices.

We have lost multiple great athletes in one season, including Tom Brady and still contended for the Superbowl. Yet, somehow that doesn't translate to BB knowing how to draft. Go figure.

Hopefully the young QB develops well. Fortunately, the Patriots are better than most teams with identifying and developing QB talent. Matt Cassell was a 7th rounder, who became a very good back-up. The undrafted Brian Hoyer developed nicely. Kevin O'Connell is the hicccup. 3rd Round pick Ryan Mallett seems to have developed well, and he has helped us keep our rosters down to just 2 QBs--similar to previous back-ups.

We don't pick-up QBs too often, but I credit the coaching staff and scouts for doing a good job over the years in securing and cultivating young quarterbacks. This time the importance of the back-up is elevated. Tom Terrific is 37 years old when the season begins. When this new QB is in his final year on contract, Brady will be 40 years old entering the season (2017).

This is by no means a selection that benefits the team in the short-term--barring a trade of Ryan Mallett. This is an investment. I am glad the team has an eye on the future. I plan on being a long-term fan--so I understand, in spite of wanting immediate help.

I don't study up on the draft like some around here, so I typically am not upset by some of their picks. This one however I hated. The fan in me definitely wanted someone that could help push the team over the top for this year. Plus drafting a QB this early just highlights how much the brass is thinking about TB's eventually end. That all being said, I get why they made the pick. It probably makes perfect sense, they are a great coaching staff and are obviously trying to do what is best for the team. Still anticlimactic for the fans though.
